Wisconsin Recruiting V - Does it even matter?

Ryan Botterill signs to play next year. I don’t know anything about him except he’s Canadian so YES!!

is he related to the Boterill who played at Michigan in the 90’s?

Hello all. I’ve been lurking a lot but have not posted in some time.

There was a lot of speculation on whether the new staff would recruit older players as they did previously. It would seem that trend mostly continues in this class. They also seem to recruit relatively big (tall) players from what we have seen in terms of the transfers and with this class, especially defensemen.

Position-Player-Current Age-Height

(G) Anton Castro-20-6’1”
(F) Gavin Morrissey-20-5’11”
(D) Jack Phelan-19-6’3”
(F) Ryan Botterill-20-5’11”
(D) Logan Hensler-17-6’2”

The Skahan loss is interesting. I wonder if that was his decision or the staff. Milewski alluded to the fact that the Badgers have lots of young defensemen, but I don’t think that would bother a potential first round draft pick. This staff seems to like guys that will be around longer (not gone in a year or two) and have more offensive ability. By all accounts Skahan is a huge defensive talent but contributes nothing on offense. I have zero inside knowledge, but I wonder if he just was not a great fit for what they are trying to do?

Botterrill put up big numbers in Canada in the MJHL and appears to have had no trouble adjusting to the jump in talent in the USHL.

If that is his mo, then I'm not sure I'd want him on the team. This staff can coach up defensive play, but offense is something that is more natural ability thing that can't be taught.

5 have signed on the dotted line....F's Ryan Botterill (true LW shooter), Gavin Morrissey (high IQ C), D's Logan Hensler (offensive upside), Jack Phelan (solid stay at home) and G Anton Castro. Were any of these guys TG recruits?

Castro was a TG recruit (committed in January 23), leading USHL in GAA at 1.75 and 4th at .916 Save% with Fargo. His GAA was 3.24, 2.48, 1.75 (21-22, 22-23 and 23-24), Save % .887, .914, .916 So steady improvement each year.

Morrissey and Phelan were Mankato recruits and changed this summer to UW after Hastings got the job

Hensler was a Hastings recruit (signed in August at age 16 and is accelerating his high schooling to try and attend UW at 17 next fall)

Botterill is a 20 year old that played major juniors in Canada and came to USHL this year. He's averaging about a point a game for Youngstown, tied for their lead in points. He signed right before the signing period opened.

So all Hastings / Knott recruits other than Castro.

Correct me if I wrong on this.

Blake Montgomery has committed for 25 26. A kid from out east currently playing for you Lincoln Stars.
Apparently was committed to Maine previously. 14 g 11a in 34 games. 6-4 180.

D Mason Peapenburg has committed for 25-26. Currently playing for Chippewa Steel. A 6-3 181 WI kid played for Notre Dame Academy. Played for Team WI also, so one of the better players in the state.

Fun fact: Blake is the son of former Badger fullback Mark Montgomery who was part of the 1993 rose bowl team!

Go badgers!!

Saw this on Bucky’s 5th quarter Twitter

The Wisconsin Badgers pick up their first new commit in the recruiting cycle with Cody Sokol! The forward from Michigan had 58 points last season for the Long Island Gulls. Was a second round pick in the 2024 USHL Draft by
