Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the problem!!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

The hockey program took an ***-kicking today on The Zone 1670 in Madison. Every caller mentioned they left early from the games this weekend, or they simply didn't renew tickets this year. I'm sure Barry isn't listening because 1670 isn't filled with UW "ball washers". They pretty much talk local sports from 6 AM to 11 AM, then a statewide sports show.

Since the other Madison sports stations don't know anything about hockey (except when Brian Posick is rarely allowed to talk hockey), it isn't discussed.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

If Barry really does only care about football, all the e-mails and calls to his office won't matter. Barry needs to feel the heat from the people who hire/fire him. I think the concern needs to be directed a level up to the University President/Board of Regents or something along those lines. If he starts to feel like hockey's terrible performance could be threatening his cushy position, that may get his attention.

You're probably right. I was so ticked off after Saturday night's debacle that I sent off another email to Jason King. I assume it's a waste of time. At this point, they likely already have a plan to take action at some point in the future or they just don't give a crap. In either case, the emails aren't likely to matter. But if they're going to subject me to 2 hours of watching garbage, I'm going to subject them to a minute of reading my email.

I looked back at the games I've attended over the past years. In those games, we are 1-7 and been outscored 38-10. At some point, I need to start making better decisions about how I spend my time.

I made it a 2-for Saturday, by picking up tickets to the Women's game as well as my remaining season tickets on Saturday for Men's.

My 15 year old son and I enjoyed the women's game immensely. There was good flow and good competition with the Fighting Hawks. We then spent more hard earned money to eat downtown and visit an establishment for a drink (for me).

We then attended the men's game and being down 1 in 12 seconds and 3 within 6 minutes was about all I could handle. We did stay until like a minute was left, but my son said how much the second game sucked and I left angry and upset. To say it was disappointing was an understatement. That game (other than a few times in the second period), reminded me of the Tech Friday game last year, where I walked out in the first period and went back to the Red Shed. At this point the entertainment value is gone and I see absolutely no reason to spend my hard earned money on men's hockey.... What a waste of really nice crowd. Then to hear Eaves say every team has games like this, blah blah blah on the way home and him getting mad at Posick when he asks Eaves if his team is better than what they showed tonight, just angered me more.

I worry that the set backs of the last 5 - 6 years is going to set the program back for a decade or more.

If Barry was there all the better as this weekend was an embarrassment.... Eaves should be relieved of duties today and let Strand take the reigns for the rest of the year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

It sucks BA was there and here's why....he saw the best 2 crowds of the year, so to him seeing butts in the seats and a lively crowd = everything is ok.

IF he does anything, it will be at the end of the year.

Never thought of it that way, but you could be right. I was looking at it just on play of the team....

Fired today is my wishful thinking. I don't see how he makes it past the end of this year, and I thought up until the last few weeks he would be extended this spring.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

At the press conference today, MM said that the BIg Ten has imposed additonal time for Wittchow. Eaves said they wouldn't announce the duration yet because they were upset and wanted to explore an appeal first.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

I didn't see the games, but the outcomes reminded me of a weekend during Woog's last year at MN. Lucia brought CC into Mariucci and they outclassed MN in every way possible, skill, effort, the scoreboard. It looked exactly like MN/CC games were expected to look, except the jerseys were switched. I knew then Woog was done. Hopefully for you guys this was "that" weekend.

Full disclosure: I'm a Sioux fan living in the Twin Cities.

On the hit, I'll say that twenty years ago it wouldn't even be a penalty. Just, "get your head up." The big criteria were met, in that he had the puck and the hitter didn't lead with his arm or elbow. Now, I get that it's a penalty. You just can't kill people now.

The unmitigated gall of Eaves to be upset over that question. Just do us a favor and leave the program now Mikey, anymore danage is done and you'll be a pariah in Madison forever.

God what a d-bag.

And if Alvarez had any sort of impression from that game I honestly hope it's something akin to: this guy has to go (Mikey that is) or just drop the effing sport altogether I can't take listening let one going to these games.

And Barry is an embarrassment as well but...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

i also emailed jason king. I included stats from the spreadsheet. This is all unacceptable. I know he can't say much to me other than try to be positive, I understand this. However after this weekend's debacle, if things don't change, I will be joining the thousands of people who didn't renew their seats.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

So I made the trip over from Minneapolis for Saturday's game, I couldn't take it anymore and walked out once it was 3-0 in the first period. I will not be returning this year. I was willing to give Eaves one last chance this year but after this weekends flop, there must be change at coach. It's unfortunate how far such a proud program could fall. Plan on going to Big ten tourney but I don't have any expectations; might be at the NCHC tourney at the Target center by Saturday.. Times are tough for this badger fan..

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

How about this: we all go to one last game, with the express intent of protesting Eaves, Alvarez, everything.

Pick the last home game of the season. We'll have time to prepare.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Well, I have been reading these message boards for years and finally today decided that it was time to chip in my two cents.

Please a moment for some personal back story:

I have been attending UW Hockey games since my first game in the 1981 season. My dad worked in Madison and our family has shared our Saturday season tickets "forever". Dad's season tickets go back to the mid-70's. Love the game, support the Badgers through and through - can't personally skate a lick. My favorite Saturday's lately have been taking my 10 and 8 year old boys to a few games (despite the losses) the last few years.

Most years I make it to 4-5 games a year, but the last few years it's been a dwindling amount - simply because of the product on the ice. Last year I could only stomach the first period of the Saturday game against Michigan. When I picked my game for this year I only took the Ohio St and Alaska games simply because I thought UW didn't deserve more than 2 games of my money and those might actually be somewhat winnable games. Won the shootout against Ohio State (tie nonetheless), and we'll see about the Alaska game this Saturday. I have always found a lot of joy bring "first-timers" to the KC for their first UW hockey game.

I wanted to give Eaves the benefit of the doubt - but to say that ship has sailed would be an incredible understatement. He has to go, the sooner the better - obviously. The fact that the AD is "not a hockey guy" makes me realize how good we had it with Pat Richter.

I can't cheer against the kids playing. That just feels wrong. It's great when (if) we win, but every loss the rest of the way only gives me solace in the fact that it hopefully brings us closer to the end of this dreadful era and a new start. Hopefully before the ship hits rock bottom.

Thanks for your time in reading this - I look forward to being a somewhat regular contributor.

Barry was at Saturday nights game
Good. He needs to see the mess and he needs to grab one of the brooms from the many gopher fans at the game and sweep away this whole entire coaching staff.

This ****ed me off too. Attended that garbage and then to hear THAT on the way home was unbelievable.

I'll be honest though, I had a blast in the second period. That period is what this team should be doing to everyone. Killed them in shots (15-5) and won the scoreboard (2-1). I sure lost my voice letting the 4 gopher fans in front me here it every minute of that period. Another good thing was I got to see the team I used to play for play during the 2nd intermission (Dodgeville Ice Wolves). Their jerseys sure have changed (Black and red to teal-blue).

The 1st and 3rd: Awful. A goal 12 seconds in. Jurusik couldn't save a beach ball. Eaves pulls him. Then puts him back in? *** are you doing Eaves?

I'll say this, and it's repeated from EVERY game this season, our defensive coverage is absolutely terrible. I think a Minnesota high school team would have better d-zone coverage. We have THE WORST defensive group in the big ten and possibly the NCAA. There are no stud defenders on our team. Our forwards don't know what the hell to do in the d-zone either. Nobody knows how to switch guys and rotate around. NOBODY.

Also, if it's a 50/50 shot with a defender pinching to keep the zone we SHOULD pinch. It's the forward's job to skate back and cover for that. Then again, we don't have the team speed to compete with top skating teams. Pitiful skating from a majority of our players.

Oh well, back to college. I'll be attending UWSP games from now on so I don't have to worry about the badgers.

God I hope so.

I'm not sure that's a penalty 10 years ago... It'd be a 2 minute at most around then. Times have changed, though.

I didn't hear the post game interview. Is there a podcast anywhere? I can't find it on WIBA-WTSO. Posick seems to be one of the nicest guys in the world and goes out of his way NOT to bash the Badgers on the radio. I'd like to meet him and give him props for biting his tongue; I couldn't.

If Eaves got ****ed at the question, and I believe all of you, then **** him.

How I felt when I found out that Mike Eaves was not fired immediately after Saturday night's game:

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Posick SHOULD be asking the tough questions; he's clearly frustrated with another losing year like the rest of us. I can't wait for Badger hockey hour Wednesday night. Eaves will pretend like it's just growing pains or some other crap excuse for getting throttled by your rival. I will also be tuning in at 8:20am tomorrow to hear what coach Strand has to say, he usually is a straight shooter.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

...this may sound weird...I feel like I should curb the name calling re: mike eaves. Just keep my posts centered around hockey content and not calling eaves a d-bag...so from here forward I'll reposition to "Fire mike eaves please, thanks"

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Last week I felt the need to join the forum to support Mike. I have been
a Badgers hockey fan since the early 80s, staying up until 10:30 to watch the replays on PBS, and then wake up early the next morning to go play a youth game on an outdoor sheet in a neighboring town. There is now such a lack of Badger hockey coverage up here most kids have no idea who plays for them, or when they play. It's embarrassing. What is also embarrassing is getting taken to the ******* woodshed by a mundane gophs team on home ice. It is time for change.
