Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

The right coach is in Ann Arbor and I think he might be able to convince his older brother to come with him.

Don Granato would be a no-brainer. Maybe even call up Brian Rafalski and see if he'd have interest in teaching the d-men.

The Union coach I'm not convinced is the right guy. Not enough of a track record yet, and another guy with a temper problem?

I like Leaman's credentials taking two ivy league schools from sub .500 to winners.

meh on Gwoz, he's old.

Wisconsin needs to move the needle on a new coach before they fall into an abyss that could last a decade or more.

Leaman has never been the head coach of an Ivy League school...

I think Don would be great, and I'd like to think we could get him to come. I'm not as sure Tony would leave the NHL. Moving the needle on the hire makes sense. We need an instant shot of credibility with this hire.

Being at the 3OT game is easily one of my favorite sporting moments of my life. I have never been in entire building that was that nervous. Man, hard to believe that was 10 years ago already.

I feel the exact same. My dad had bruises on his arms for a week after that game from me jumping all over him after Skille roofed it.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

90% delusional, 10% troll. tDon could get canned due to them underpeforming and attendance being down, it's a longshot but if he was available, I'd take him over all others.

The attendance isn't a result of performance, or at least is not MUCH of a result due to performance.

Your regular game SRO ticket is $35, $40 for premium games this year.
They wanted $65/ticket/seat for the premium games, IIRC. That's insane.

The U is pricing out the regular fan.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Rick Bennett - Union College
Norm Bazin - Lowell
Nate Leaman - Providence
Rand Peckhold - Q Pac
Mark Mazzoleni
Gwoz

or, current in state coaches:

Chris Brooks - Point
Tim Coghlin - SNC (although he may consider the UW job a demotion)
I don't know exactly how much of a bump in pay Wisconsin would be, but I can't imagine it would be enough for Leaman and Bennett to leave schools where they have already won national championships, or for Blasi to leave his alma mater. Especially considering the state that the Wisconsin program is in right now.

You make it seem like Wisconsin's hockey program has been down for a long time. You do recall that they were a #1 seed 2 years ago. They have the facilities and overall academics to recruit well. They are also bringing in a solid recruiting class this coming year. A new coach would jump start this program.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Tim Coghlin would win more games at UW than anyone who has been brought up in this thread. A moot point since we're still Leavin' it to Eaver, but you guys have no idea...

Well, being a UWSP grad and long time coach at SNC - would he desire such a move? Is he content being the proverbial "big fish in a small pond?"

I am not trying to be critical of Coach Coghlin, I've never met him and do not say that as an indictment of him as a person/coach. I just know some people prefer being successful in a very comfortable, less stressful environment.

Barry not being a "hockey guy" makes me think he will have to lean on some other people for this POTENTIAL hire. To me, that seems like a good thing. When he bought Bielema, Anderson and Chryst in to head up the FB program, Barry seemed like he made the call himself since "he knew what was best". Clearly, he would not be in that same position here - but maybe his ego would get in the way. I can see him asking somebody in the Athletic Office if "that guy from the 'Miracle' movie is still around".

Thanks for the additional info. I'll cross tDon off my list.
...........................................................................

I would not want Rafalski as an assistant at this point. He was an awesome D for years, but he's light on coaching experience. UW is not a place where I want a guy to learn the craft, I want a guy who knows the craft.

Currently listening to coach Strand on radio..says "cleansing has been going on in practice this week". Excited for Eaves radio show tonight..to hear all the positives he had coming out of this past weekend.....

"All the positives"....what won't be a show - that will be like the length of a short commercial.

There are only two positives that came from this weekend:

1. We are two losses closer to the end of the Mike Eaves coaching era.
2. Barry was in attendance to see the steaming pile that was once Badger Hockey.

Let's hope this was the final push that Barry needed to send Coach Excuse out the door!!

Someone in this thread pointed to Union having a .500 record this year as a reason Bennett would consider leaving. There is a huge difference between a program that won the NCAA title 2 years ago and is now a .500 team in a really good conference, and a program that was a #1 seed that went one and done in the tournament 2 years ago and has a winning percentage of .237 since then in a weak conference.

It rarely happens in college hockey that a head coach leaves one school to go to another. Look at Denver. They had a better situation when Gwoz got canned than the one Wisconsin is facing right now. And they weren't able to poach a head coach from another established program. Let alone a program that just won an NCAA title.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Im sure Rick Bennett would love to see what he could do with athletic scholarships.

I think Granato would be a great choice too. And Tim Coghlin would be a no-brainer if he was interested in moving...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

I think the Big Ten is a few coaching changes away from being the monster it has the potential to be. With the resources Wisconsin has I would be floored if Bennett didn't jump at the job if offered.

The other thing I got from what I heard from Strand was that he seemed to be excusing Wittchow's hit because "he's so tall that he hits everyone in the head." I know you want to defend your players, but that's a pretty lame argument. He also put some blame on Novak for "not being aware."
