Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Let me see if I can sum up what others will say...

You sure can blame this on MM!!! And here are the reasons why:
He doesn't have the talent on the team to push Kunin in practices.
He doesn't have the talent on the team to give Kunin a chance to shine during games.
He doesn't allow a style of play that gives talented young forwards like Kunin a chance to shine on the ice.
He looked at my baby the wrong way and made him cry.
He drinks pumpkin spice lattes.
He uses Internet Explorer and Bing.
He listens to Nickleback.

Everything was acceptable for me until you said Eaves uses Bing. He has to go.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

while I do agree some, but how many lately have been early departures, and how many have actually been 3-4 year players? Looking at this link http://collegehockeyinc.com/pages/2015-16-alums-nhl There are 6 Badger Forwards in the NHL. Rene Bourque wasn't an Eaves guy, so the other 5 are his. They all only played 1 or 2 years. Most of these forwards already had the skill they needed to be in the NHL or would have been there had they spent a year or so in the minors.

I agree 100%, I'm just putting myself in Eaves' boots and what I'd show a recruit. He didn't really do much to enhance them while they were at UW other than make them system accountable, as some else pointed out.

Duncan Keith

I think he falls into the category of being successful no matter what path he takes.

Yeah but I wonder even for every Duncan Keith, how many Kenny Ryan's there are. Who isn't done yet by any means, but he's a good ways off from being in the show. Or maybe even sticking in the AHL. Ryan Hayes and Adam Pineault are a couple of other once high end guys who spring to mind that took the same route.

In some very important ways, Eaves is extremely fortunate in what he can show recruits. Fantastic campus, good town, and strong academics. But those kids want to be a little awestruck by the game experience, I think, and bringing recruits to games now would be a strong negative, whereas even 10 years ago it was a huge positive, with the band and UW's student section. Even having the banners up there for recruits when they walk into the empty rink is a factor, IMO.

UW's recent suckageis not just their problem, though. They are historically among the elite destinations for college hockey, and all of their opponents, especially the rivals, have a stake in getting them back to that.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Is kunin's imminent departure directly eaves' fault? Not sure I'd absolve eaves and Alvarez.

Wisconsin absolutely HAS to be a destination for superstar hockey players but the coaching failures which have led to recruiting failures which has led to terrible seasons, combined with the administration's apathy and lack of atmosphere at the games means the chl and other ncaa teams are infinitely more attractive to kids.

Once in a while as with bc you'll see a kid leave and the staff should not be blamed for it. In this instance we're talking the 4th kid in 2 years to either renege on a commitment or arrive on campus and leave prior to the end of the season.

That's a trend, not an anomaly

There's no way I'd bring a a recruit for a visit until the b6 teams get to town (unless the sue were coming in). I hope at that time at least the 100 and 200 tiers are 90% full with a smattering into the 3rd tier. Bringing them in for an ASU or NM game would have been downright embarrassing.

These things are all crucial to recruiting athletes here. If you ever listen to Barry Alvarez talk about how they started building up the football program in the early '90s, he talks about those things a lot. They didn't have recruiting advantages over the traditional powers, so it was all about "selling what we have."

It's crazy to think that I'm thinking in these terms only 2 seasons after Wisconsin earned the 4th overall seed in the NCAA tournament. I know the recruiting situation isn't completely dry, but I fear that may change once guys who were recruited pre-2014 come through (if they don't decommit), and it becomes time for the post-2014 recruits to show up.

Cross posted from the recruiting thread
Schlossman's in the GF Herald on the fall of the Badger's hockey program, agree or disagree on his

http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/3876209-mens-hockey-what-happened-Wisconsin
Schlossman eludes to, but doesn't outright say that all of UWs struggles are tied to having Osecki and Patrick leave after the 09-10 season and Eaves bungling the hire of Butters and the permanent promotion of Schuchuk after Butters abruptly left. All of UW's struggles of the past 6 years are tied directly to those hiring decisions.

Recruiting is the lifeblood of a college hockey program, if you don't recruit well you are not going to be successful long term, irrespective of everything else.

Right now The UW hockey program is caught in a viscous cycle. The fans are disillusioned with Eaves and the on-ice product and are staying say in the THOUSANDS. Potential recruits are turned off by Eaves pressure tactics, the on-ice results, and morgue-like atmosphere at the Kohl Center. Top current players are leaving almost as soon as they get a better offer because of the lack of future success in the program from the poor recruiting and the dismal fan attitude.

Comments on the game series thread aside, it is very possible the Badgers will get some good results this weekend. UND has had success so far but has played NOBODY. Plus, it's UW/UND and the Badgers have a history of being Sioux-killers. For both sides, I'm sure it's nice to have a series that means something to the fans.

It's always nice to watch a UW v UND series and I'm sure it will be a nice change for the sconnie kids to play in front of a crowd.
