Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

The WPT pickup is good, but there are still 7 homes games that are not televised. Back in the glory days of free tv and rotary antennas, they showed just about every home game. And what makes it suck worse is before 1/9/15, I'll only get to see 1 game of UW hockey on tv. That makes the season only seem 2 months long. I suppose I could add the college sports package for a few months so I can see the CC and PSU games, bringing the total of games to a whopping 3 before Jan of next year. And the schedule sucks too with all these dumb bye weeks early in the year. They play 2 games all of December. What a joke.

Exactly. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you, that Barry lied to us. With the lack of TV, the wacky schedule, and the devolution of the game-day atmosphere that makes it less enticing to go to games, who knows when I'll get to watch a game.

First home game this Friday. I think some mega LIT's from Red Shed beforehand should drown out the pain....

Based on the play so far, you won't be missing too much. you could always try and attend the game, but I know that isn't possible for those out of town.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

You people need to calm down about the poor start. Half the team is freshman and need a bit of time to get up to speed. Playing in front of crowds so far you would see at a local beer league game DOES NOT HELP. They'll score, wait for it. Attendance will be similar to last year. We play big boy Big Ten teams now, people will come. The devolution of game day atmosphere? I'm more excited then ever to see Badger hockey. Adding the lights and such makes it feel like a professional game.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

All 5 games WPT are home games.
Oh! :o

I don't think that's good for business. How about picking up some road broadcasts? Even for home games, many people will stay home and watch on the ol' HD 60 incher.

I don't have much to add, but I agree (except the part about the effect of crowds on the road). I'm super excited.

Winning helps bring people in. That, and playing an exciting brand of hockey which Eaves' teams do not do. Eaves needs to get wins immediately. He also needs to loosen the reigns on the team (yeah, I know that will never happen so..."hey Barry, you paying attention to ticket sales?")

As far as freshman acclimating and blah blah blah. How long did it take Paul Ranheim to acclimate? Scott Mellanby? Robbie Earl? Adam Burish? If you've got it you've got it and it shows immediately. No excuses for this current group or any that succeed them. The youth excuse is Eaves' excuse and it's rubbish.

Good news on the TV front, appears five games will be picked up by WPT. Hasn't been announced by Wisconsin yet, but it's showing up on the BTN2Go schedule.

Thanks for update. I won't be able to stream the game Saturday live, will the game be available to watch at a later time thru BTN2go?

Alright you got me on the first three. Although scoring in the 80s was a lot easier than it is today. Burish didn't shine his first year on campus, only had 6 points in 19 games.

But, I urge you to give them time. Never once do I remember, yet I'm young, of any time this many freshmen had to play for UW.

That's not possible if there are no games to pick up.

FS Wisconsin is already picking up road games at Michigan State and at Michigan. The other road games not currently on the TV slate -- at Colorado College, at Penn State (Sat), at Ohio State (Sat) and at Michigan State (Fri) don't have local TV to pick up. I take that back, Sparty is broadcasting that game locally, but it's also streaming on BTN Plus for those in Wisconsin. You can also stream the game at CC and the game at Ohio State. So the only road game that Wisconsin fans can't watch is the 1:00 Saturday afternoon game at Penn State.

WPT doesn't have to do any games. It's a nice bonus they are doing the 5 games that they are.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Oh, I don't know about that. Ranheim and Mellanby both came aboard in the 84-85 season as one of the few times the Badgers have had two 2nd rounders in a class, #38 and #27 overall respectively. (btw, Eaves has had as many top two round NHL picks play for him as Johnson and Sauer combined.) That team had Tony Granato (67pts), All-American D Tim Thomas (50 assists!) and the vastly underrated freshman Gary Suter, (9th round, 22pts) among other great Badgers, and would score 5 or more in 24 games, be shutout only once, and score only one, twice.

Ranheim, who would go onto play over 1000 NHL games, managed only 11g and 11a for the high flying Badgers. Mellanby, who would go on to play over 1400 NHL games, had 14g and a (terriffic) 24a. Ranheim's year-by-year points would be 22-33-59-62 (hmmm...) and Mellanby would be gone after a 44 point sophomore campaign, straight to the NHL with no waiting. Consider the Badgers scored at almost twice the rate they do today, adjust these figures however you see fit for comparison to today's players.

As far as it showing immediately, well, this team would start the year 3-7 with only a sweep over an 11-win season UML, and a split with an even worse Providence to their credit. Hard to believe they didn't fire Sauer by December.

That's the point. Whose fault is it for all the freshman? no evening out of classes so you don't have a team with all these young guys.

I agree as does nearly everyone, that this is a legitimate issue with Eaves tenure. Although, like most things, it's not as simple as it appears. If I were coaching I'd want some measure of imbalance built into in the program. Primarily because NC's are won (with exceptions) by veteran teams. It's probably not just coincidence that Bob Johnson's 3 titles each came every 4 years, or DU's back to back wins came with a huge and talented Junior, then Senior, class for example. Obviously having half the team be Freshman though is not what we're shooting for and I agree that Eaves has failed to adequately address and plan for the problem.

I'd add the caveat that I can't think of any sort of luck that has really helped him in this regard, but can point to some occurrences that have hurt. Among a few other things, I think it was awfully hard to predict that Brendan Woods wouldn't be a 4 year player, and even harder to predict that a top MNHS player and 7th round pick like Patrick Daly would just quit playing hockey all together. When they came in, I certainly would have expected they would both be very good veteran seniors this year. They're not and every little bit just adds to the problem.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

It's hard to have even classes when so many guys bolt to the NHL.

The same thing that the Minnesota's and Boston College's of the world deal with too. I am sick of the excuses.

At this point it really doesn't matter as Eaves won't be going anywhere. I just have to live with it and try to be positive....

I noticed the goof's last title was 2003. Not sure anybody here would be any happier with that.
