Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Sorry guys. I'm just trying to be optimistic about this year. I'm sick of hearing this ****ing and moaning, believe in your team.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Anyway, Saturday looks like it will be sold out, if not it will be close.

Just checking to see if we get free burgers with a ticket stub at George Webb if we score more than one goal??

We'll be over 13,000, but we're still quite a ways away from a full-blown sellout, including the upper-deck end and corner sections. (The ticket site doesn't even make those seats behind the first three rows of the 300 level ends available until the rest of the arena gets full enough.) But as we know, 13,000 at the Kohl Center for hockey looks and feels pretty much the same as 15,000 when it comes to the atmosphere.

You mean for the weekend total though, right?!! :D

But seriously, who are you really?

Personally, I'm very much hoping to find out one day that in reality you're Chuck's alternate account.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Despite the pessimism, I am very excited for this weekend. It's one of the few chances I get to hang out with friends this time of year, I get to see Phil do his thing again and I get to revel in how superfan has such a loud voice. This year might be rough, but there is a good foundation to build on for the future, hopefully we continue the home strength that we had last year. Go red, and go Joel!

you know we have to score to see Crazy Sign Guy do his thing, other than a few "go red" cheers.

...and I get to revel in how superfan has such a loud voice.

He "retired" after last year and passed the figurative torch to me (I did the goalie's name a few times last year). He may temporarily unretire for one of the Minnesota games or something - he did for the Penn State volleyball match, though that's easier with general admission seating. My peak loudness is less than his, so sorry about that, but it usually goes pretty well. As usual, I'll be starting a lot of the chants, but I love when random people from all over the student section start chants. If someone does "hostile and abusive" before I do, I'll be pretty happy.

Like you, despite being aware that UND is favored to sweep the series, getting back to the Kohl Center for Wisconsin men's hockey is enough to get me excited.

Also, I saw one of those half-page advertisements that is an extra sheet on the outside of of the paper itself in (on?) the Wisconsin State Journal today. It had this, as well as a promotional schedule and some pictures.

Oh, I don't know about that. Ranheim and Mellanby both came aboard in the 84-85 season as one of the few times the Badgers have had two 2nd rounders in a class, #38 and #27 overall respectively. (btw, Eaves has had as many top two round NHL picks play for him as Johnson and Sauer combined.) That team had Tony Granato (67pts), All-American D Tim Thomas (50 assists!) and the vastly underrated freshman Gary Suter, (9th round, 22pts) among other great Badgers, and would score 5 or more in 24 games, be shutout only once, and score only one, twice.

Ranheim, who would go onto play over 1000 NHL games, managed only 11g and 11a for the high flying Badgers. Mellanby, who would go on to play over 1400 NHL games, had 14g and a (terriffic) 24a. Ranheim's year-by-year points would be 22-33-59-62 (hmmm...) and Mellanby would be gone after a 44 point sophomore campaign, straight to the NHL with no waiting. Consider the Badgers scored at almost twice the rate they do today, adjust these figures however you see fit for comparison to today's players.

As far as it showing immediately, well, this team would start the year 3-7 with only a sweep over an 11-win season UML, and a split with an even worse Providence to their credit. Hard to believe they didn't fire Sauer by December.

It's not all about points. If you were there you'd have seen the massive potential of those players and therefore there really wasn't any panicking when they lost.

As for Burish, it was patently obvious from the first few weeks of the season that he and the rest of the class were something to build off of. Particularly Burish and Gilbert.

After 4 games thusfar this season does anyone have a sense of what UW is building off of or toward? Who are the freshman that stand out? Forget that even, who are the upper classmen who stand out? Or are we just waiting for a few more heralded forwards to come in next year and the following year who might make the current crop look better?

As long as you keep the goalie chant loud and proud, I will be a happy camper. Bonus points if you can recreate it with superfans voice cracking style

I've found I have to go with a little bit of a lower pitch to get my optimum loudness.

Have you seen all 4 games. How would you know what potential they have or haven't shown.

listened to em on the radio...also read posts from people who have seen the games...said posts describe lethargic play, terrible penalties, no spark on offense, on and on

Burish played in half the games his freshman year and didn't score a goal.

As I was in the student section then, I was there. No doubt you could see the talent in Ranheim, Suter and especially Mellanby early, but frankly it was considerably disguised by the fact that the team really sucked early on and there was plenty of panic in the streets. When I say we only beat Lowell people probably think "Oh Lowell! Well they're a pretty good program. Not that bad." But UML had just stepped up to D-1 that year... Geezus, I don't even think they had matching uniforms yet. This from a Badger team that had been in the title game 3 of the 4 preceding years and won it twice. The only things preventing The Coliseum from being burned to the ground were 1.) The 17 - 7 and and 10-3 weekend shellackings were both on the road at NMU and UMD. And 2.) The massive quantities of alcohol consumed by the more violent among us fortunately had a subduing effect.

As for Burish, it was patently obvious from the first few weeks of the season that he and the rest of the class were something to build off of. Particularly Burish and Gilbert.
I don't know that Burish was particularly impressive out of the gate. Just another hard working guy battling for a spot at that point, IMO. Gilbert was the one that came in and impressed. After that Licari looked like he maybe he could contribute a little early on. Even though they struggled, that group had Winchester and Bourque to make them look a little better early, couple of halfway decent Badgers, there...

I have very little to go on as I have the same listening-reading experience as you. Dougherty seems the real deal. Hughes, Rockwood, and Wagner seem to have done some good things, especially considering they don't yet know what they're doing. I find that many observers confuse lethargy and lack of effort with the hesitation that springs from indecision. According to Chase Drake on the WHH Eaves is installing a more pressuring forecheck and even the vets are on a steep learning curve.

The plan is, as it has always been at Wisconsin, is to be playing good hockey by the end of the year. I think we will be, but we'll just have to wait and see how the raw talent develops.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Also, I was encouraged to see that Student season ticket sales increased by a third over last year. It's the obligation, and more importantly, the honor of the students to drive the atmosphere in the KC and I'm very pleased to see a marked increase in participation for this season.

I'm pretty thrilled about it. Honestly, considering what happened last year and the low price this year, it should have sold out in the summer, but I'm still happy about it. Baby steps.

I saw them tweet at you that they were around 1,700 (?). How much more is that compared to last year?
