Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Last night removed most of any doubt I have about renewing my season tickets. Typical of this year....out shot (and shots are indicative of out played in this case) 2 to 1. Decent crowd.....but against a name Big 10 opponent in February.....disappointing in size.

There was a sequence that typified just how poorly this team is coached just before we left with over 8 minutes left in the 3rd. All three forwards caught below the goal line in the O zone, and one of our genius D men decide it's a good place to try to pinch and gets beat at the blue line rather easily resulting in a 4 on 1. The puck didn't end up in the net (let's be honest, MSU is not a very good hockey team either), but you can teach squirt aged kids (for sure by pee wee) that all 3 forwards probably should never be below the goal line in the O zone and then as a dman if you see that, that you probably shouldn't pinch at the line.

Although I expect we will be better next season (honestly how could you not be relative to one of the worst teams in all of college hockey this year), if Eaves is not launched at the end of the season, I have zero intent of making the required contribution to the Badger Fund by the end of April to keep my seats. It's time to pick up a couple of games I may want to see a season rather then committing to tickets for every game.

Mark you are 100% where I am at. Got my badger fund renewal request and I am not giving any money and giving up at least one night of tix. Friday night is with my college friends and don't know if they will want to give them up.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Not sure I can agree that Sparty is a poor hockey team. 9-4-1 since mid December and with the lead they may be he toughest team in the country. Experienced, first rate blue line with four NHL picks in front of the best goalie in the conference, and certainly one of the best in the country. Held 11 of their last 13 opponents to 2 goals or less. PK has killed an incredible 45 of their last 47. Lost only one all season (and won 11) when scoring first. Sure their 1-4 can be frustrating for opponents and very tough to watch for fans, makes it seem like their not doing much, but they do what they do very well. They do not cough up leads and are very hard to play against. I don't think anyone anywhere really wants to play them in a one and done game.

Unfortunately we have to play them at least twice more. Ugh.

Badgers just didn't win enough puck battles early and were out of position on a couple of plays. Kind of the same story on the whole season, although I don't think they were terrible all night. They battled and created some good chances that they just didn't get in the net. Zully missing an open net from 8 feet comes to mind. Kudos to Rumps who was very good this weekend and didn't let in the softies that have plagued him recently.

Seems to me when you're really good you can recover from mistakes, when you're not, every mistake is magnified and every good thing you do seems a lot less good. After crediting Eddie for playing pretty well recently, I thought he wasn't very good on the weekend at all and fell back into making some very poor plays. Just didn't have the same jump. And Drake and Schulze both made terrible plays that led directly to goals last night. On the whole the three freshman D probably made less mistakes than those guys, which is good for them, but obviously we can ill afford let downs from anyone, especially the vets.

LaBate has really been working very hard of late, so kudos to him as well, but I think Eaves nailed it in saying that the boys didn't show much poise and confidence with the puck when they were pressured. Somewhere he said something about having a little "moxie" and making a play. That's pretty much it to me and it's a hard step some guys just have to take somehow. Such a big difference in playing with confidence vs. not, and once you get there, everything is different. Guys are good players, they just have to get to playing like they know it. But again, credit Sparty for making it frustrating. I thought Besse seemed especially frustrated. He did some very nice things away from the puck but ended with no even strength sog and only one even strength attempt on the night. Also I'd like it if Rockwood would stop with the drop passes in traffic above the circles.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Curious if I should even watch the game from last night.

How did you record it?

I only saw the 3rd period. I had hope until the 3rd goal went in. The percentages say at some point this season UW is due for a great comeback. Let's save it for the B6 Tourney.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

I'm likely going to be taking a serious step back in writing duties next season due to advancements in other parts of my life. There's a chance I may be giving it up entirely, or maybe just parts. I'm not sure yet. At minimum I'm looking for someone to handle recaps for almost all the games next year. While there's nothing I can do monetarily at this point, we've developed a relationship with the school so we can get credentials for you if that's something you would be interested in. Or you can write them from home, whatever works for you. We also have the ability to get credentialed for any road game if you're interested in that sort of thing. I'm looking for someone that is familiar with writing AP style, but if you're at least competent and can string together a sentence we can teach you how to do AP.

If you have any interest please e-mail me andyjohnsonb5q(at)gmail.com and we'll figure something out. If you have a writing sample that would be lovely but if not that's fine. If I do step away entirely there is a possibility for a small stipend (think beer money, not rent money).

You do what you need to, that's ok with us. The only thing that freaks me out if the recruiting stuff, that info is gold Jerry, gold! How does that get covered is the huge question.

Good for you. Not great for us fans, but we will make do. I appreciated all the writing you have done over the past number of years.

I look forward to all posts by Chuck (Andy) because he provides inside info and tells it like it is. His color coded “Projected Wisconsin Recruiting Chart” is a great tool. It supplies current and future information about incoming individuals, team makeup and possible early departures.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

I'd never seen us give up a 4-on-1 before, so there's that.

I missed this 4 on 1, so I have a question. Were the other 4 players below the goal to cycle the puck around instead of maybe being in front of the net or in a position to score on a rebound like every other team in NCAA hockey?

All this talk about season tickets not being renewed, who will be left in the KC next season? I even ran into Phil a few series back and he is worn down.

He does the gals and the guys, that's a lot of running around. I'll take over if someone pays for the tickets (of the men's). I'm willing to go to every men's home game. :) Of course if I tried to bring Phil's signs in, they'd confiscate them.

All 3 forwards were caught deep....if not all three actually below the goal line...definitely close. Puck turned over and our dman on the right point decided to try to pinch and got beat to the lose puck (rather easily and in that situation...your dman HAS to see he has no forward support coming back and can not pinch unless he is 1000% percent sure he will get to the puck first).

I'll be back with student tickets next year. Hopefully for the whole year. (I'm planning on graduating in December, so I could conceivably go elsewhere, but that would make a million things more complicated.)

Phil has been to a majority of the women's games over the last couple of years, which has been really nice to see. He really adds to the game atmosphere. Needless to say, he gets to use the number cards a lot more at LaBahn than at Kohl Center.

I was told by a reliable source that Phil's signs now STAY at the Kohl Center; he can't bring them in and out anymore. He has to go somewhere and sign off for them each game and then bring them back.

He is a dangerous man after all: has the ability to get crowds to follow him.

This doesn't surprise me. I hate having to open my coat to show the rent-a-security guys that I am not hiding something under my coat. Even my kids have too open theres and swing it open. What a joke, much like the team this year. A coat and a zippered fleece, open both. There not checking coats and pockets, so any one smart wont be hanging flasks, whatever from inside the coat, just put it in a pocket. They do less checking at a brewer game with 30k people.
