Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!
Not sure I can agree that Sparty is a poor hockey team. 9-4-1 since mid December and with the lead they may be he toughest team in the country. Experienced, first rate blue line with four NHL picks in front of the best goalie in the conference, and certainly one of the best in the country. Held 11 of their last 13 opponents to 2 goals or less. PK has killed an incredible 45 of their last 47. Lost only one all season (and won 11) when scoring first. Sure their 1-4 can be frustrating for opponents and very tough to watch for fans, makes it seem like their not doing much, but they do what they do very well. They do not cough up leads and are very hard to play against. I don't think anyone anywhere really wants to play them in a one and done game.
Unfortunately we have to play them at least twice more. Ugh.
Badgers just didn't win enough puck battles early and were out of position on a couple of plays. Kind of the same story on the whole season, although I don't think they were terrible all night. They battled and created some good chances that they just didn't get in the net. Zully missing an open net from 8 feet comes to mind. Kudos to Rumps who was very good this weekend and didn't let in the softies that have plagued him recently.
Seems to me when you're really good you can recover from mistakes, when you're not, every mistake is magnified and every good thing you do seems a lot less good. After crediting Eddie for playing pretty well recently, I thought he wasn't very good on the weekend at all and fell back into making some very poor plays. Just didn't have the same jump. And Drake and Schulze both made terrible plays that led directly to goals last night. On the whole the three freshman D probably made less mistakes than those guys, which is good for them, but obviously we can ill afford let downs from anyone, especially the vets.
LaBate has really been working very hard of late, so kudos to him as well, but I think Eaves nailed it in saying that the boys didn't show much poise and confidence with the puck when they were pressured. Somewhere he said something about having a little "moxie" and making a play. That's pretty much it to me and it's a hard step some guys just have to take somehow. Such a big difference in playing with confidence vs. not, and once you get there, everything is different. Guys are good players, they just have to get to playing like they know it. But again, credit Sparty for making it frustrating. I thought Besse seemed especially frustrated. He did some very nice things away from the puck but ended with no even strength sog and only one even strength attempt on the night. Also I'd like it if Rockwood would stop with the drop passes in traffic above the circles.
