Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?
No doubt it was Kevin's winning of my last Player of the Week award of 2013 that has both spurred his play and brought him to the fore front of fan's attention!
Schulze has tremendous feet, it was only his difficulty in adhering to Red Green's advice ("Keep your stick on the ice.") that may prevent him from becoming the first back to back Shabby award winner of the season. There were three or four instances where the puck slipped away from him in situations where his footwork had created great opportunities. Finished the weekend with 4a, 4shg (all last night) +4. If his stick work can improve he can present real problems for the opposition. He and McCabe can both carry the puck net to net when called upon to do so.
I've also been impressed with Eddie Wittchow's skating. He's improved tremendously, and for such a big guy he is really moving well. Chase Drake jumps up at just the right time for a big goal, and after I gave Frankie a little pre-game shot, he starts it off with an excellent wrister to get things going. The blue line is really starting to come together.
I've been pumping this kids tires to anyone that will listen for a while now. He can move as well as any defenseman in the country. In a straight line race I'm not sure if he's the fastest out there, but with the puck on his stick and his agility on his skates, there aren't many better. As he continues to get better manning up on guys defensively he's going to be a player.
