Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I don't see why it makes any sense to redshirt him now. Wisconsin needs him in a top 3-line role this season to score. He has the ability to put points on the board and I think he'll finally be able to do that this season. Teams that win national championships have three lines that can score along with an energy line. I think this set up gives the Badgers that opportunity. Last season Wisconsin had two lines that could score and an energy line.

I agree he needs to be a top 3 scorer, but he has shown nothing in games to show he's headed in that direction, hence the extra year of development would do him some good. If you put him with Zengerlee and Kerdiles is he just going to put up 30 pts like that? I don't know.

Well, he does partake in goonery from time to time... :D

Good. Good. Have him work on lawnmowers and handshakes over the summer and see how it goes. You need an excuse to get to the Ralph anyway.

Men's Hockey Coach Mike Eaves' five-year contract was extended one more year, through June 30, 2018.

I need the Ralph to be about 5 hours closer to Madison. ;)

To clarify, all the games will be played on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays with the possibility of Saturday night games followed by Sunday afternoon games. It appears likely that there will be no midweek games this next season.

But...but...but guys! I thought all but a couple series would involve Thursdays or Mondays because the Big Ten wants hockey to die and they hate us all!

Time will tell if that's how things are in the future. For most of us, regular Sunday afternoon games are bad enough.

On a more serious note, I will be disappointed in the student showing at those games. It happens all the time in basketball unless it's a court-storming opportunity - student fans simply don't show up for those in great numbers. Living on or adjacent to campus solves other problems for me, though, and I know it's not the same for everyone else.

Haven't these guys heard of the N.F.L.? Those Sunday PM games better be in February.

I don't think that the conference games are going to be loaded into the 2nd half of the season.

Actually, they are. Big Ten will play a back-loaded conference schedule. That's why the dates we know for non-con games are all before the first of the year.

That is correct, apparently didn't include my complete thought.

I think Barry just flipped us off.
I'm still trying to process it.

I get that Eaves (eventually) earned his keep this year. He did well enough to turn an absolute disaster into more than enough reason to keep him around for another two or three seasons. Maybe I should put more weight on how remarkable that is, but I would still say he's earned himself a "get out of jail free" card for at least as long as it takes to give him a chance to see how he does after we lose a lot of talent after this season.

But to guarantee five more years (this takes him through '18-'19, right?)... boy that just doesn't seem like a prudent decision to me.

I don't know. A great end to last season, the new alignment with Michigan, Mich State, and UMinn all coming to town this year for conference games. All that should create some additional excitement for Badger hockey this year.

My take after letting my emotions settle:
Were the OVERALL results this past season enough to warrant a one year contract extension? I believe so.

Have the results from from the past 4 seasons been good enough to keep Eaves employed. Yes, but just barely. Which is why I consider this next season to be absolutely critical. Anything short of a wire-to-wire run as a top 5 team will put Eaves under a ton of pressure the following season.

Knowing that a coach has a 5 year contract has to help in recruiting (at least prevents other schools from questioning the commitment UW has to eaves.
