Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

The refs, too! I like to wave to and applaud the refs as they take the ice, though it may have something to do with getting them on our side. I've yelled my head off when I've seen some blatantly terrible calls against UW, but sometimes I wonder what it's like.

Michael Mersch is the first 20 goal scorer to return to Wisconsin since Robbie Earl in 05-06.

If he returns. Posic was funny yesterday when he listed off to Mersch all the guys who told him they were coming back and then didn't. But in listening to Mersch, he seemed very genuine in saying that he was coming back.

Monday is the deadline for applicants for the coaching job and I think 5/1 was listed as the start date. I'm pretty excited to see who he hires. I just hope it's not some WAY under the radar hire like Butters was. I would be happy with Walsh or a proven assistant coach. I have this gut feeling he's going under the radar.

Yeah, I wasn't there representing our little thread today. ;) The financial gain would be for the KC though as we'd be paying them.

Eaves was actually very engaging and when you meet these people, you are reminded that there is a living, breathing person inside that shell of athlete, coach, whatever.

I'm actually optimistic about next season and if it goes well, I'm willing to cut a little more slack.

Several years ago at a golf event, I approached Eaves as he was going to his car afterward. It was a very hot day and he was with his wife, so I'm sure he was eager to get out of there, but he couldn't have been more polite and engaging. He introduced his wife, who did not seem annoyed. He actually asked some questions that extended the conversation somewhat when I let him know I was a Sioux fan. Beyond professional, I would say, in a situation in which he would have been justified to show some impatience.

When I mentioned that I knew of a guy named Gurtholfin, though, his face clouded over and he jumped in the car and peeled out. Left his wife standing there. What's the deal with that?

Any of you insiders find out who has applied or is being considered for the open Assistant position?

This is so obviously a lie.

He knows me as Sergio.

Barry fires broadside at all of us anti-Eaves people. From the WSJ:

Looking back on the rough start to the season, Alvarez said Eaves kept his wits during all the turmoil.

"I knew he was going through some hard times with injuries, a suspension and a coaching change, yet he didn't flinch,'' Alvarez said. "He just kept coaching and getting his guys better.

"I can't say I was concerned. I know everyone wants to panic. Everybody wants to throw their hands up in the air. But if good coaches would react like most people react, they'd be out on the street.

"If (Eaves) would have reacted like some other people -- some of our hockey people in town -- (the Badgers) wouldn't have responded like they did. That's what coaches do. You keep your nose to the grindstone. You stay on task and make things better.''

Did I panic? Yeah I did, but it took an historic effort like no one has ever seen from a UW team to make the ncaa's. That did save the season. Are the long term issues Barry is oblivious to? Yeah there are. Wake up Barry. Barry don't know hockey. Barry don't know jackcrap.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Again, people didn't "panic" just because of this season.

The discontent has/had been building for a long time.

Barry's protecting his guy, but one has to wonder if he knows the real story or not. I'm not sure if he does one way or the other.

As always in reference to Barry, remember that all his decision makers on staff are hockey people. He's just the voice.

-Assistant To The Athletic Director: Mike Cerniglia (pretty self explanatory)
-Associate Athletic Director for External Relations: Justin Doherty (hockey guy)
-Deputy Athletic Director: Sean Frazier (hockey guy)

Barry may not be a hockey mind himself, but he's surrounded himself with people who know a thing or two about the sport.

Those guys are just his puppets. What is Frazier's background?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I think it's the other way around. Barry is just a figurehead for Wisconsin athletics.
Even when he's going before the Regents to beg for more money for football facilities.

Donors for other sports get called out in the media.

Say, I'm in Madison this week for work. Took a little tour around campus for sentimental reasons and wouldn't you know it? They're replacing the scoreboard at Camp Randall above the student section. You know, because the one that they put up less than 10 years ago wasn't cutting it.

It wasn't panic, it was disgusted frustration over the long term results. Barry is correct, it is the coach's job not to panic. The AD should also not panic, but someone needs to critically and objectively evaluate the state of the program AFTER the season.

I stand by my evaluation that Eaves has to either win the NC next year or find some way to avoid a significant backslide in 2014-15 and 2015-16.
