Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Say, I'm in Madison this week for work. Took a little tour around campus for sentimental reasons and wouldn't you know it? They're replacing the scoreboard at Camp Randall above the student section. You know, because the one that they put up less than 10 years ago wasn't cutting it.

Actually, that came up in my meeting last week and seems that the year following that scoreboard being put up, technology made a giant leap with lcd or led or something. They were kicking themselves about the timing and waited this long to replace it.

I have no problem with them doing so. The new screen there and over Bucky's Locker Room will be 3 times as large as before.

Also, 10 years seems like a pretty good lifespan for what amounts to being a TV.

Miller Park replaced their's a few years ago and the new one was a huge improvement.

In addition, the north side of Camp Randall Stadium is being reconstructed to look like the outside of a stadium, not an ambiguous metal/concrete structure. It's not exactly the nicest facility, especially compared to the Kohl Center and La Bahn Arena. It's all part of a bigger project for facilities for the athletes we don't see on game day, and from what I understand, it's not just for football.

Even when he's going before the Regents to beg for more money for football facilities.

Donors for other sports get called out in the media.

Wisconsin had the second worst football facilities in the Big Ten ahead of only Northwestern according to ESPN. I have zero problems with the athletic department trying to upgrade.

On one hand: yeah, I really have no argument over that one, other than the part where I really think people place too much importance on big screens for replays.

On the other hand: Let's not forget who we're dealing with (not just with me being a Negative Nancy all the time, but concerning Coach Alvarez). No more than two months after you posted this on the old blog, Barry went before the regents to beg for football money. I thought I had posted a link in one of our threads somewhere, or maybe on the No Alibis blog, but I can't find it. This is as close as I could find, but I do remember seeing something in the State Journal about him personally going before the Regents.

After the fact to me, it seemed like Barry putting a public halt on the hockey project at the time was a bargaining tactic to get money funded for the facility. Donations were stalling and going public with a shutdown may have generated more interest. Regardless, they got it built. I have tough time complaining about it now. Not many other programs in the country are building $30 million practice facilities for their hockey teams. Badgers are pretty blessed in that regard.

Seeing as Navin came to UW right out of WI HS, and with the depth @ F, why not redshirt him and buy him a year of development to maximize his chances @ UW? I know we'd all like him to be a 3rd line guy, but I'm not really seeing it.

I don't see why it makes any sense to redshirt him now. Wisconsin needs him in a top 3-line role this season to score. He has the ability to put points on the board and I think he'll finally be able to do that this season. Teams that win national championships have three lines that can score along with an energy line. I think this set up gives the Badgers that opportunity. Last season Wisconsin had two lines that could score and an energy line.

I think one of the keys to which new forward gets in the lineup is going to be penalty killing, unless one of the returning players can excel in that role. They are going to need to replace Ryan Little's penalty-killing, and I'm not sure which players might be candidates to join Dahl, S. Little and Meuer in that capacity.

You bring up an interesting point. The last 10 games or so of the season Kerdiles and Zengerle were the third unit. So it was 1) Dahl/R. Little, 2) S. Little/Meuer, 3) Zengerle/Kerdiles.

I'm comfortable with the 5 returners killing penalties, although it's nice to give Zengerle/Kerdiles a break when you can. Regardless, you can almost sharpie in Dahl/S. Little/Meuer killing penalties. Kerdiles and Zengerle will spell them. Someone else has to step up into that #6 spot. My best bet would be Tyler Barnes probably.

I haven't looked at this a ton over the years, but is it reasonable to think that you'd more or less want your top 4 penalty killers on your third or fourth lines? That way you can run your top two lines immediately as the penalty ends....I was thinking last year maybe that was part of the reason Dahl didn't center the 2nd line after Lee went down (that and his line worked well together and they probably didn't want to split them up).

Ideally? Hell yes you'd like your top four PK'ers to be third/fourth line guys for exactly the reasons you list. I don't think that's why Woods was given the opportunity over Dahl, as Dahl was given that opportunity for a game or two and it didn't work out. But yes, going forward the goal is to have your top PK'ing forwards on a lower line.

PS, the Wisconsin recruiting thread is coming down to less than 40 posts before a new one. Any suggestions for a new thread title?

How about, "Prospect Watch - The Little Gurt is Almost Eligible?"

At this point, he's a grinder type with above average motor and average skills. Gotta think Eaves will want to jump on this before no one else is interested.

:p
