I'll take Hartzog if it's a player. Could it be a non-player?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Brendan Woods is leaving to sign with Carolina. Just got off the phone with him a few minutes ago. Here is theLINK.

Good scoop Chuck. He's got the frame, but is he ready? I suppose that may open the door for Soleway or another forward to join UW next season. Maybe a decommit from DU, Maine or elsewhere the coaching carousel is spinning...

Well there goes my "California Connection" banner idea for next year.

Wait... I'm calling Eaves. If I just show him my preliminary sketches I bet he gets a flight to LAX tomorrow and signs somebody. It's a pretty good banner.

Anyway, I hope it works out for Brendan. He stepped up huge for Bucky down the stretch, and I really liked the size and physical play of that whole line. Perhaps Brendan would have had a monster year next year, or perhaps he would have been squeezed for playing time, (which may have been a consideration for signing?) either way, there's a pair of big skates to fill.

Don't feel too bad. He's not really from California. You could make some kind of "coast-to-coast" themed sign with Kerdiles and Zengerle (presumably) on the same line.

wow. that's a bit odd. Woods didn't really strike me as ready for the AHL much less a shot at the NHL. good luck to him

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

While I agree with the sentiment, I disagree factually. Barring unexpected injuries/departures, if next year's team puts together 25+ wins and let's say, a frozen four berth, Eaves will absolutely be able to slide with 15 wins the season after. It will be "young and rebuilding" team.

Should it be ok? No. Will it be ok? Sure. As long as there are results next year to point to.

I don't think that the fan base will take a sub-500 season with anything short of a NC next year. While the powers-that-be in the Athletic Department might be able to accept that, I doubt that the masses will have much tolerance given how they responded over the 2nd half of the season.

I wish that Woods had stayed, he was primed for a great Jr year. He is the type of player that you don't really recognize the importance of until they are gone.

While I agree with this, I prefer to look on the bright side - think of all the penalties he won't take!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

2014-15 will be the make or break year for Eaves, regardless of the graduations and early departures after next season, Eaves can NOT let the team slide back into mediocracy like they have after the last 2 runs.

we aren't gonna to be i need of a new badger hockey coach for ar least the next 3 years, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to speculate who may or may not be available because there is no coaching posotion open.....I agree eaves cant let this team slide backwards however like lucia pet he also cant stop unforseen players from leaving early which in turns leads to a slide backwards.....

The team has ALREADY slid backwards, hence the under 7k per game actual attendance at the KC. To get to that, it has taken a many years long slide.

You're wrong. The issue isn't unexpected departures, it is when half the starting forwards graduate in one year. That is something that Eaves KNEW that was going to happen and very few early departures are completely unexpected (and those that are completely unexpected are usually not a critical loss).

The fact is that short of the national title, the Badger fan base isn't going to be satisfied with a one year flash in the pan. I'm tired of this roller coaster rise and I am not the only one.

A NC is a bit steep, I'd be happy with an at large bid that is a result of a top 2 b6 conference finish. Once you get in the ncaa's it's hard to avoid getting Holy Crossed or Yaled.

Good luck to Woods, getting paid is probably funner than go to class.

I was impressed by Wittchow and Schulz last season.

It will be fascinating to see who applies for the D assistant coaching job.

I agree with this statement completely. I don't think Eaves is a bad coach I just think his management of the hockey program has not been stellar. It seems odd that the early departures always catch him by surprise. No effective backup plan.

That's fine on a season by season evaluation, my point was that if Eaves wants to avoid an angry mob with pitchforks and torches with a sub-500 season in 2014-15 he had better not be one-and-done in the NCAAs next season. If Eaves lead teams are going to miss the NCAA tournament more than half the time they have to make the most of the times they do make it.

right-on! I completely agree w/this.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

There is so much that comes into play in winning natties, as everybody knows, including good fortune. But trends become evident after a while. For instance, I think Hakstol is a fabulous program coach. He is not, however, a great game coach. I do not have the knowledge or experience to pass judgment on his coaching, but results become telling after a time. He develops players well, I think, and gets them to buy into his system, and that makes for consistency and, if you recruit well, very good results year after year. But he can be gamed, IMO. Still, I like what he is doing in GF.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I don't think those would be "surprises". I think those would be the most likely (maybe not Zengerle...but the other two).

and always remember ala Craig Smith they are not coming until they are dressed for the 1st game...and then they may jump at mid season ans that has happened before

with wisconsin now joing the ultra weak B6 hockey league and on paper looks as of they will be in the running to win it, you can see a second straight ncca tourney appearance for the boys....and if that happens then you can bet the farm eaves will be around no less then 2 more years.....in fact if you wanted eaves out that bad the wcha schedule would have done it alot faster then this very weak B6 schedule is going to do...and if your worried lack of attendance will alvarez and his B6 hockey league buudies will contribute to the cause and then who knows what time or night of the week we wil be playing is also going to be an absolute huge factor in lack of attendance......but dont worry like chuck says we will be on tv mre and playing B6 hockey teams so all will be well.....right now with all variables playing into this Eaves has no less then 3 years coaching in the B6 hockey league.....

I really don't get all the distain for B6. Initially I was apprehensive about it, but have grown to actually prefer that to status quo in a bloated WCHA. When the WCHA added Bemidji and UNO, it was time to go. For me the allure of the WCHA was getting to play the marquee programs and when you added 2 nonmarque...teams you watered down the abilty to play the North Dakota, Minnesotas, Denver, UMD, CC, SCSU. I have little interest in watching Tech, AA, Bemidji, UNO, Mankato...ever. UNO has the capability of being a solid program, but has little or no history with UW and the other 4 are perennially just not good. For me WCHA verses B6 is not any different in terms of quality of conference going in and the B6 has the potential to be MUCH better then what the WCHA was.

Here's my take on the old and the new:

Elites (National Championship pedicree, facilities, tradition, ect) WCHA:Minny, North Dakota, Denver, UW B6:Minny, UW, Michigan
MidTier (sometimes elite, but generally at least good to solid) WCHA: UMD, SCSU, CC, UNO B6: MSU
Basement (occasionally a blip on the national scene...but generally not) WCHA: AA, Tech, Mankato, Bemidji B6: Penn St, OSU

I was hesitant to put MSU in the 2nd tier as they are probably much closer to the top tier then any of the old WCHA teams I put in the next rung. When you compare the potential of Penn St & OSU to the teams in the bottom category of the WCHA...there is no comparison in terms of coaching, facilities, budget....generally the ability to get to at worst the mid tier. Oz and the comittment Pagula made to PSU will likely have both very very solid programs (hell, they already are). For every game against Tech, Bemidji, AA, Mankato, you weren't getting a game against North Dakota or Denver. How many years since the expansion of the WCHA did we not have 8 games against Denver/North Dakota (2 each at our place and theirs)? The answer is EVERY ONE. First year we played Denver/NoDak 6 times and this season we played them 4 with NONE at the Kohl Center...repeating that NONE. Hell we had a total of ONE home game against Denver, Minny, and North Dakota this season. The WCHA had become not what the WCHA once was and it was never going back...so time to move on. I'm excited knowing we will get 12 games a year against Minny, MSU, and Michigan and have the schedule flexibility that we can play North Dakota, Denver, and more Eastern powers then we have been able to with the bloated WCHA.
