Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Announced attendance vs. Actual attendance:

Link

Men's hockey (6,996) and women's basketball (1,551) posted the lowest average actual attendance figure for their sports in the seven years of data kept by the athletic department.
 <7k is embarrassing. Heck, less than a full house is too.

For instance, the announced attendance for the Feb. 25 men's hockey game against Penn State was 9,078 but the actual number of spectators was 5,338. The 3,740 difference between the numbers was the highest for men's hockey among regular season games this season.

You could tell sitting there that the place was even less than half full. I would just laugh to myself (better than weeping) when they would announce the crowd.

This MUST have caught the fat short bald man's attention. Unfortunately, he probably thinks that just slapping the B1G name on hockey will magically bring everyone back.

Unless I can find someone to split my Friday package (4 tix), it's very doubtful that I'll renew. I'll be keeping my Saturday tix (2).

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

like ya said cant argue with that scheduling its like getting 8 home games, that is if the badger fans will actually show up and support thier team.....besides the resch center is a great hockey venue

I don't think it's anything like extra home games. The fan support should sway in Wisconsin's favor, and they only have to travel about half as far, but they still have to travel and have a road game routine in an arena less familiar to them than most WCHA arenas. To fans in northeastern Wisconsin (which I'm guessing you are based on your name), it will sure feels like extra home games. I definitely think it's awesome for UW.

And they are projecting another $470K less next year, so they expect even more people not renewing and not showing up. Not good.

The assistant coaches job has been posted at NCAA.com. Maybe some of you hockey know-it-alls should apply.

As a fan, I don't look at them as extra home games either. I went up there a few years back for the UW-NMU series. It's one of those things that I did once and don't really feel the need to repeat yet.

My kid was a goalie, how hard can it be to coach D? I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the heads-up.

I love the idea of playing away games in GB. What is the ticket price for UW/NM @ GB?

Is that compared to this year's actual gate revenue or for what was expected going into this year?

And maybe, just maybe, they'll try and get more butts in the seats by sacrificing some of the ticket cost per person.

I think this came up earlier in the thread and one of the possibilities for decreased revenue is the "series here and there" that's not on the traditional Fri-Sat schedule. The Sun-Mon PSU series didn't do too well attendance-wise for one of Barry's fancy B1G opponents, for example.

Edit: Speaking of Barry:

Badgers sports: Barry Alvarez gets new contract, pay hike

Through 2018; starting at $1.05 million per year this coming fiscal year

$20, IIRC, maybe $22 last time

Which is good money for sure. I just don't see Mersch sticking at the NHL level next season in which case there is a big difference between 150K and a million a year. Instead of playing in front of 5800 in Manchester, he can play in front of double that, get his degree, and work on his skating so he has a chance to actually play in the NHL the following season. Wish I had his choice, as neither one is exactly bad.

Is he transfering to NoDak ?

We would, only NCAA rules preclude it as constituting an unfair advantage for UW. It may seem silly but there's actually good reason for this little known rule. Here are just a few examples of what would happen if some of the regular poster's knowledge were unleashed in any official capacity:

Solo's team would revolutionize the game playing almost exclusively with six forwards on the ice at all times and average 17.8 gpg. (while giving up only 15.3 gpg)

Chuck's team would render the NHL all rookie team voting obsolete as it would be comprised of previous year's starting Badger 6 every single year.

Almington's team would consist of a roster scientifically calculated to lead the nation in every statistical category. They would break their own NCAA record for goal differential by exactly .01 each proceeding year.

Gurt's team would win a lot, but more importantly would have nationally syndicated multi-media extravaganzas for post game pressers. They would quickly surpass the combined audiences of Dancing with The Stars and NCIS in becoming the most popular show in television history by a wide margin. Profits would pay for installation of leather recliners, individually selected beer taps, and a nacho cheese fountain at each seat in the KC.

WiscDC's team would be so popular with fans that UW would shortly be forced to build a dome over Camp Randall and convert it to a permanent hockey stadium seating 127,000. After becoming the first team in history to play all it's games at home, including the annual conference tournament and the entirety of all future NCAA tournaments, the waiting list for tickets would extend out 227 years.

I could go on but the point is that the NCAA prefers to make moves in keeping with an artifice of parity. (See Kerdiles suspension.) It also explains the phenomenon of posters on message boards such as USCHO always knowing more than the coach and administration. It's because we do.

btw- this phenomenon is not universal; for example it's highly likely burd's team would soon be summarily executed for crimes against humanity.

:D I laughed. I was surprised to be featured, because I haven't made any comments about the coaches here, but I'm honored. I do have 2 corrections, though -- First, the on-campus hockey arena would be Bell Centre sized (plus a couple thousand). It would be full most nights, and when it's not, the fabric-covered seats in the upper deck wouldn't reflect the spotlights like the empty plastic ones do now. All the other seats would be hard plastic, for noise-making purposes. Second, we don't host everything...We would just schedule all our road games during holidays/breaks, because of the students! And you forgot about all the signs and banners, which are held responsibly. And the rubber chickens.

Edit: I forgot another thing. La Bahn arena would get oversold so it's actually packed, but with enough room so students can use their red cards.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I wonder how the NMU agreement will impact similar plans that were being made with MTU. Originally, wasn't it planned that we would do a four year cycle with Tech and Northern, alternating between Madison and GB and playing two series against each every four years?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Mark Zengerle confirmed to me that he plans to return for his senior season.

LINK

Smart move on his part, finish school and then pursue a professional hockey career. I would be pleasantly surprised if he ever makes it up to the NHL. I feel he would be better suited for success overseas in the Swedish or Finnish leagues. His style of play would fit well over there.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Seeing 5 (so far) Gophers leave early and no Badgers (so far) doing the same, I'm gleefully laughing in the corner.
