Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Seeing 5 (so far) Gophers leave early and no Badgers (so far) doing the same, I'm gleefully laughing in the corner.

we should be a real good hockey team if everyone will just come back. So far having zengerle back really helps now lets hear form the other two...watching the mass exodus in minnie is kinda entertaining, whats the pet gonna have left for a team next year

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Derek Stepan will be getting a nice pay day this summer. He is quietly having a very solid year. He is +17 and closing in a being a point per game player.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I've got to think he ends up around Evander Kane/Ryan O'Reily numbers. Both were Restricted Free Agents and both getting around 5 million per.

I wonder how the Rangers are going to make that work with the cap. He should be getting at least the same or more than O'Reily. Stepan may take the years for something like 5 yr 25 mil?

McD is also up for a pay day.

I won't gleefully laugh in the corner til they lace up the skates for the first practice in the fall. A lot can change from now til then. On paper, this team should win the inaugural B6 regular season title.

I agree. As of now, I think UMass Lowell, Miami Ohio, Wisconsin and Notre Dame have the most returning talent on paper and look like 2013-14 preseason top 5 teams, fwiw. But don't think any are lethal powerhouses to fear. Time will tell how much of an impact the strong recruiting classes at Minnesota, Michigan and Boston College will have in their conferences.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Don Granoto is a possible DU coaching candidate. I think this would be good for UW as it may groom a possible Eaves replacement for us. He could get his recruiting network established and get used to working with college aged kids, then be ready to roll for UW when they need a post Eaves coach.

I wouldn't count on DU being a "stepping stone" or "training ground" for UW. Gwoz was an alum and when Eaves got the gig...don't think Gwoz was overly interested. DU is a gig that pays well, has elite tradition/facilities/ect and is a destination job and not a stepping stone.

completely agree with all of this. not to mention...not all UW grads or alums want to come back and coach in Madison (Gwoz said as much when he said "Wisconsin's had their time"). I'd love to see Don Granato in Madison but there are at least two questions to consider:

does he want to coach at UW?
how long will Eaves be in Madison? if turns things around he could potentially be there another 10-15 or more years

2014-15 will be the make or break year for Eaves, regardless of the graduations and early departures after next season, Eaves can NOT let the team slide back into mediocracy like they have after the last 2 runs.

I agree...assuming there is not some mass unexpect attrition this Summer, the Badgers should be a pretty darn good team next fall. One that contends for the inaggural big 10 conference title and is comfortably on the right side of the tourney bubble. Then the dread following offseason where I expect massive attricition through graduation and otherwise...and yes Eaves should be on a short leash (especially if this coming season is not a decent run in the tourney).

While I agree with the sentiment, I disagree factually. Barring unexpected injuries/departures, if next year's team puts together 25+ wins and let's say, a frozen four berth, Eaves will absolutely be able to slide with 15 wins the season after. It will be "young and rebuilding" team.

Should it be ok? No. Will it be ok? Sure. As long as there are results next year to point to.

if they slide back to 15 wins or so in 14-15 I'll probably go Col. Kurtz in whatever UW thread is around at that time;)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Wisconsin has an early departure. Kind of a surprise one, too. Will post more when I get the go ahead.

Surprise?

Hmmm.... Ok, my surprise pick would be Eddie Wittchow.

I suppose now I'll just have to sit here pushing the refresh button for days to find out.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Get your guesses in. Haven't watched you enough to guess but I assume if it were one of the big guns the tone would be different.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

"Surprise" scares me. Hope it's not Zengerle, Kerdiles, or McCabe

I don't think those would be "surprises". I think those would be the most likely (maybe not Zengerle...but the other two).

I guess it depends on how you define it. I wouldn't really be surprised to see those guys or Mersch go, but given the indications have been so far that they are staying, it would be a surprise of sorts...

Perhaps it's Shuey. He's taking over in Denver or Maine. Surprise!
