Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...
It's been interesting to watch Eaves at his pressers the last few weeks. Not at all a heart on his sleeve guy, he seemed about as emotional as I've ever seen him after the WCHA championship. Feels like no matter what happens Friday, this has been a special year in the Badgers program. Eaves has repeatedly said how tough things were every day early in the season and the way he talks about it makes me feel like not only have the players learned some great life lessons from this season, but also the coaching staff has perhaps re-learned a few things as well. When Butters quit and the team was sucking, the program seemed at an all time low, but they persevered and somehow the kids bought in. Would have been so much easier for things to go the other way. Matt Walsh has been excellent and it's hard to believe how lucky we were to get a quality guy in, given the time of year and the commitments so many coaches already had. Shuey has really seemed to blossom this year with the added responsibilities on the bench and his personality seems an excellent counter balance to Eaves.
Regardless of the history, I love the fact that we have three coaches who are all Badger alumni and who all played on three different National Championship teams. They know what it takes from three different perspectives and I feel very confident that the boys will really be prepared to meet the challenge of facing a very good UML team on Friday. Even if we were not to succeed (don't worry, we will) I'd still count this as a pretty amazing season.
