Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

It's a Great Day for Hockey.

Perfect reason to start the weekend early with a 3:30 faceoff. Badger Hockey, fish fry and cold beer.....

ok...all discussion aside re: Season, Eaves, etc. now we're all on the same boat with the wind at our backs, or climbing the mountain, or storing some hay amirite?!?!?!

Paint Thinner, Check!
Hatred, ...well...U-Mass Jan? yeah eff em, CHECK!

Drop The Puck!

After this weekend, I'm ready to label Lowell the SCSU of hockey east.

Yup, the neighborhood bar has DirecTV and we're pretty sure they'll get the game, so that's my plan too!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

well this sucks...

one take-away is this: U-Mass Lowell has 9 freshman, 7 Sophs, 3 Seniors and something like 9 Juniors. no excuses when Wisconsin has 2,000 freshman in 2 years. if they're any good they'll get to the dance. UMass with 16 underclassmen? yeah, enough said about that inexperience garbage.

Umass is the better team, credit where credit is due.

where does this leave UW? I have no idea. They SHOULD make the NCAA's next year but is Besse really enough to get over the hump and challenge for an FF spot? I honestly have no clue.

the following year? well, with Eaves' history it will be trying times again with the "youth" card ready to play.

anyway, kudos to Derek Lee and Ryan Little and good luck to them in the future

Its hard to expect them to overcome their greatest flaw as soon as the tournaments start. They just dealt with it temporarily last weekend in the conference tourney, just like the bball team. They just cannot score in oddman situations. No matter if it is on a breakaway, a penalty shot (1-0), an odd man rush (3-2, 2-1, etc) or on the power play, the results are the same. The infuriating thing is watching Lowell play and see their players bury the puck time and time again on odd man rushes with sniper like precision. We lumber down the ice, show no creativity, have players that take themselves out of the play by skating behind the net or getting too deep in the zone (in what has to be some sort of addiction to cycling along the boards) and we get a poor shot right to the chest of the opposing goalie. I wonder how much time we spend practicing this. Either it is the least effective practice time ever or we don't even bother. We haven't been good at odd man rushes since Robbie Earl graduated.

If we had our 12 offensive players line up to each take a penalty shot on their goalie, I would be amazed to see more than one go in.

Take today out of the equation and the second 2/3's of this season is an excellent learning experience for this group and something that can be built upon.

I'm a big believer in incremental steps to a championship - no, not mountain climbing - but a few consecutive years building upon themselves before you are ready to go all the way. This run was the first of those steps. (Lowell, btw, took this step last year)

These guys have been playing do-or-die hockey for about 4 straight months now. Eventually you're gonna wear out and crash and today was obviously that crash. Of course I wish that the crash could have been put off for another few games, but what are ya gonna do?

We did a number of things today that are out of character, notably poor neutral zone play and poor play at the top of the offensive zone that led to great scoring chances for UML. These are signs of being mentally drained.

I don't believe for a second that these guys just showed up with a give-a-shat attitude today. They just ran out of gas.

A better pacing for next season - with a better start - should yield a better seed and a deeper run.

I think we may look back on that Broadmoor at this time next year (or maybe a couple of weeks later) as a pivotal accomplishment.

I say Kudos to this group for turning it around when really none of us believed that they could or would. Job well done.

And thanks to Rammage. Certainly not his best game today, but he did captain us back from the edge and to the aforementioned Broadmoor. Dude's had a tough run on and off the ice and I think he had a real nice senior season and turned it around in the end.

Tough to see you guys go down today. The Badgers had a great run in the second half. Hope you can hold on to some of your best guys.
