WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Truth be told, I completely missed the typo. It's a monday.

No system can perfectly pick the best 16 teams, because it's impossible to develop a consensus for what the best 16 teams are. Best is by it's very nature subjective and always subject to the recency bias. The difference between the last 2 at-large teams in and the first 2 teams out is normally so small that just flipping one or two games could make all the difference. All the PWR does is pick the subjective ranking criteria in advance so that the decisions are dictated by the outcome on the ice and not some last minute bias.

Since NUM is not a TUC and CC will not be one if they get swept by DU (note it would be in DU's best interest for CC to be a TUC), UW fans will be able to point to the Monday PSU loss as the major reason should UW miss the tournament.

Assuming he is done for the year (and at this point why wouldn't he be?) would Morgan Zullnick have the option of coming back for a 5th year with a medical hardship year having played so few games this season? He's a kid I expected some contribution offensively and his essentially not playing has hurt.

Yes.

I was thinking the same thing about DU wanting CC around as a TUC, but do you want to take the chance and loss one game and then have to win on sunday in the rubber match? Wasn't UW in this situation some years ago where it helped them to play three games in the 1st round and losing one?

I like the PWR because it is transparent (and I like math), and Almington is right, the difference between #13 and #19 is probably a game or two for each team ending differently or the right team "falling off the cliff" at the end or "jumping up the cliff" at the end. At least you can see it coming though, but in the end winning, and winning a lot, is what matters and the rest falls into place. Five or six years ago UW needed 17 things or so to happen the last two weekends of the season to get in and enough of them did to get them in, a sub .500 record no less, but the scenarios were right there to be figured out.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

The great thing about the PWR is that it's cut and dried. You know what you have to do.

This is to me, BY FAR, it's greatest benefit. It still has problems as do most statistical models that attempt to quantify such things as sports results. I'm reminded in a sort of disconnected way of Nassim Taleb's 'Black swan theory' which generally suggests that perhaps the only sure thing is that eventually something unexpected will happen to screw up the most carefully thought out model.

As Almington points out, we still subjectively pick the criteria that goes in to the model (perhaps in smoke filled back rooms!) so there's really no getting away from some level of subjectivity to any of it. It may come to pass that for example Bucky's biggest problem does turn out to be a single loss to CC early in the year. Or the PSU loss at the end. I can live with it. Whether some group is picking the teams, or using the PWR in picking them, no doubt the main criteria in both cases is, 'Just win, Baby!'

Lastly, given that PWR has Bucky t18 and KRACH has the Badgers 14th, KRACH is obviously a FAR superior system! ;)

Baggot finally got an article up where he has Eaves saying unless a F goes down, he'll be redshirted, which is great news. He makes next year's recruiting class look a whole lot better.

Power rankings.....just win and it will all take care of itself. The more games you lose, the closer to the edge you get.

I'd much rather have the criteria picked before the season than have someone in a room after the season advocate for Union over UW because they think the UW athletic department is full of arrogant ********.

I doubt that DU is going to tank this weekend, just that I doubt if they will fill a huge sense of urgency because they are relatively secure in their NCAA chances.

I very much agree, however I think you have purposefully or not, stumbled onto something there. If the arrogance factor could be incorporated into the current PWR system, I'd be happy with it. The gofers would never see another tournament, leaving a tidy space for us as the far lesser of evils.

Despite one DU fan's apparent urging for the Pio's to take the weekend off, it's no way to go into the NCAA's. No doubt Gwoz will have them ready. CC seems to have been pretty inconsistent though, sort of feast or famine with those guys.

Regardless, we have to put down the Dogs this weekend.

Especially since DU hasn't done well in the 1st round of the NCAA tourney 4 of the last 5 seasons, they should want to play at the Final Five and play well there to build momentum.

DU has been bounced 4x over 5 seasons right out of the gate:

12 - Ferris State
10 - RIT
09 - Miami (OH)
08 - UW

One last solution: The above is really only true because of our democratic ideology and system of government. We simply need to move the NCAA's to North Korea and the Leader would perfectly pick the 16 every single time without question. Problems are all solved! :D

Sorry guys, I was only kidding. Just some sort of failed red menace humor.

Anyway, everyone knows that by this time next year, Barry will simply select the names of those who displease him the least.

I think I just stumbled into the Bottom-feeders bracket site selection thread.

Is that before or after he goes golfing and gets five holes in one?

In today's news: Despite having never played before, Leader Kim Jong Un has singlehandedly defeated all 16 US NCAA tournament hockey teams after playing them simultaneously on 16 separate ice sheets using just one skate and a popsicle stick. The Leader was quoted as saying "I enjoyed defeating these teams, who are without question, the 16 best teams in college hockey. I will blow up America now."

DU has always made a habit of playing good through the wchaf5...especially if they make it to st paul.....there ncaa tourny record isn't so good

That is truly sad, but not surprising news. One of my favorite players ever. Can he coach the defenseman next season?

That just rips your heart right out. Hopefully he can use his great education to get a good job and maybe get into coaching.

Boy, that news just stinks. What a tumultous last three years in his hockey career.

That's terrible news at least he got a degree from UW to fall back on plus all his contacts in the hockey community, still not fair for a good young player like him.
