Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

I'd encourage all the men's fans to attend the inaugural women's game on the 19th @ the LaB. The tickets are reserved as I found out last night when I ordered mine and they are not doing print at home tickets for this game, so it's will-call or mail. I'm in WH row 11, where ever that is (I couldn't find a seating chart online.)

Just got mine. WH row 15. Can't wait to see the place!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Just a reminder, Sun Prairie native Will Butcher will be on the ice tonight for the U18's. He spurned the local Badgers for Denver.

Also, there is an uncommited recruit on the U18's by the name of Connor Hurley. I had a chance to see him a few weeks back and he's the real deal. Kid out of Edina who is friends with Labate (they played together for a year at Holy Angles). He's filling in with the U18's for a few weeks before heading back to Edina for the high school season. He said he wants to play in the Big Ten or Hockey East. Gophs would be tough to beat out, but he's allegedly taken visits to Michigan and Notre Dame as well. Would be shocked if Eaves didn't bend his ear a bit this weekend as well.

Chuck, where was Nic Kerdiles and Jake McCabe tonight? Are they hurt?

I think Tyler Barnes is going to have a big year. Also, I think Chase Drake will be getting some ice time this year. The team came out flat, but had a nice 2nd period.

Kerdiles is currently ineligible (not sure exactly why). I have no idea in regards to McCabe.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Was in Madtown this weekend and caught the game.
I thought Navin looked pretty good tonight...one of my favorite Badgers.....
Also, too bad Bucky couldn't get Will Butcher. He seemed to have great hockey sense and could really skate. He stood out among the NTDP players.
Kerdiles wasn't dressed....surprising since I would assume he wanted to play against the NDT. Hope everything's ok.
Great performance from Wisconsin's Freshman......I'm very optimistic about UW's season after watching the game.

I know Jordan Schmaltz played at GB and Sioux City in the USHL, but did he play in the Caps' program growing up?

Schmaltz played for Chicago Mission before Sioux City I believe. I'm not sure if he played for Mission all the way through his youth though. I know a lot of top guys moved over to that program at one point when they hosted Nationals and had an automatic spot in the Nationals field as the host.

Here's Eaves' quote on Kerdiles after the game...

“They (the NCAA) have been investigating this for a while. It’s not in my hands right now. That’s between the NCAA and their investigation.”

Not a whole lot of info. Kerdiles would have finished high school in Michigan while with the USNTDP. You would think the USNTDP would have it down to a science as far as getting guys the right courses so there's no eligibility issues, unless it's with something from California before he went to the USNTDP...

Thanks. With quite a few college players coming out of the Madison area, I've often wondered if most of them were being brought up in the Caps program before we hear about them in the USHL.

There are probably more coming out of the Team Wisconsin program (Midget hockey before and after the high school season) than other programs. It seems a lot of kids are playing Caps until they hit high school and then moving to play Team Wisconsin and high school hockey. Looking at this year's Team Wisconsin U14's I saw a lot of kids that used to play for the Caps. There are a lot of kids from other parts of the state, especially Green Bay, that have worked their way through Team Wisconsin as well and into the NAHL or USHL.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

The Boys looked good last night. I like the line combinations, will be excited to see Kerdiles out there whenever the NCAA clearinghouse gets its head out of its ***.

The Badgers have three lines that can score goals, and I think if the "sophomore" line of Woods/LeBate/Navin clicks that Badgers could be very dangerous. There is a lot of potential on that line.

Having a "4th line" of Little/Dahl/Meuer is great too. Going to wreck some havoc out there, and chip in some goals here and there. Wouldn't be surprised to see each of them with 5 goals this year.

The strength of the Badgers in 2006 & 2010 was having high end depth, where teams couldn't match up. I think they are a year away from pure dominance in that category (assuming everyone besides SRs returned), but this team is much stronger w/ just a year's growth.

Very excited. Rumpel and Peterson looked good too, and I must give props to Chase Drake. He played well and was even out there on the PP. 1-2-3 night, even in an exhibition is a strong showing for someone who has only played 2 games in 2 years. Good for him.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Why didn't McCabe play last night?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

I'm not sure what to think of the Kerdiles situation, doesn't UW analyze the transcripts of incoming players to ensure the status of their eligibility (to the best of their knowledge of NCAA rules)?

It just seems odd this kis has been on campus for well over a month and this hasn't been worked out already one way or another.

I know it's happened with 1-2 hockey players previously...and juco football transfers...it's just exceedingly frustrating to see as a fan

The NCAA operates in strange and baffling ways and usually at something of a glacial pace.

to quote Hank Rollins "the truth ain't nothin but the truth", hopefully they get this cleared up by november

UGH!!! Or maybe it will NOT get cleared up and Kerdiles will play pro hockey...unbelievable. hat tip to bucky's 5th quarter on this http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/201...-kerdiles-dealing-with-ncaa-eligibility-issue

...This has to be so unbelievably frustrating for Coach Eaves, Schuey and Butters...I wonder if Kerdiles had this relationship with the Pulver Sports people already while he was being recruited?

What kind of pictures could possibly compromise his ameteur status?

Was at the game last night (in great seats I might add, + free parking+ice cream+win= way fun night:)) I really tried to watch the news guys, but I really just wanted to watch the game. Anyway, Schulz really stood out to me as playing solid is the D zone, especially in transition. Of course these are under 18 guys he was forcing wide and not 20 yr olds. Zengerlee's goal was simply awesome, top shelf, no chance for the tender. Zulink's breakaway goal was super sweet too, he's gonna bury some puck in the cardinal and white. The Eaves post game interview was interesting, I think they played decently considering the circumstances, but Eaves was unimpressed overall.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

It sounds as if the situation started because a photo surfaced of Kerdiles out to dinner at the NHL draft with representatives from Pulver Sports and some of their clients including Tyler Seguin, Nail Yakupov, and Alex Galchenyuk.

It's certainly not an NCAA violation to be at the dinner, but the student athlete would be required to pay for his own meal as he cannot receive any benefits.

To bad he didnt keep his recipt. Unfortunately, the burden of proof is on the student athlete to show that no improper benefits were received and not on the NCAA to prove that they were.
