Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

On Ramage, he went from horrific in the first half back to some semblence of his former self down the stretch. Until further notice, kids that have been drafted are a major flight risk when going into their senior seasons. Teams do not want to get anywhere close to Schultz's situation (or Wheeler, or Gregoire, or Sweatt) where a high draft pick can dictate where the play with the risk of losing them with no compensation at all.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

these stats were unknown to me: The Badgers had their worst finish in WCHA history (11-15-2, 10th) while setting a school record for fewest shots on goal (975) and compiling the poorest penalty-killing ratio in 10 seasons under Eaves (76.3 percent).

I believe that that this being the the worst WCHA finish he was talking was the 10th place finish. This wasn't even the worst WCHA record under Eaves, back in 2002-03 (Eaves first year) the team had a record of 7-17-4 for a 0.321 winning percentage and an 8th place ranking and this was well was well below the 0.429 winning percentage of this team. Considering for many seasons the WCHA didn't even have 10 teams, it would be hard to finish in 10th even in the worst of seasons.

(edit: cleaned that up, a total mess)

or
Zent, Heatley, Earl, Rafalski, Schier, McDonald, Suter x 4, Granato x 2 (Don and Tony), Pavelski. those aren't guys that brought in JR or HS habits that brought them down or caused them to stumble so it's not like this is a universal problem that every frosh has to overcome annually, if that were the case frosh wouldn't play at all (ala football unless you're Dayne, R)

when a player needs grooming (like over 1/2 the team right now) yeah, you've got problems. I guess that's been the point for me, not enough difference makers brought in, each class needs about 2 of those.
I agree with Almington that the times were different. There is another factor with these comparisons. You seem to forget the upperclassmen that all of those players got to play with.

You also mentioned that you saw the Burish class was something special from the beginning. I'm not sure what you saw then that you don't see improvement in this years sophmore class. The Burish class had 34G, 68A, for 102 pts. as freshman. The Barnes class had 24G, 69A, for 93 pts. which is not a huge difference. In their sophmore year the Burish class had 42G, 63A, for 105 pts. An increase of 3 pts. The Barnes class this year had 51G, 95A, for 146 pts. An increase of 53 pts.

As far as LaBate not living up to billing, compare him to someone more recent. He had 5G, 15A, for 20 pts. Blake Geoffrion had 2G, 4A, for 6 pts. as a freshman. Navin with 6 pts, Paape with 9 pts, McCabe with 10 pts, and Woods with 10 pts all had even or better years than Geoffrion. And once again, look at the upperclassmen that Geoffrion had to play with.

I'm encouraged for the future from what I have seen and I'm usually on the Scooby side of the glass. Paape, Woods, LaBate, McCabe and even Navin have shown flashes at times. I think the sleeper of this group could be Navin. Don't forget, this kid came right from high school in which he missed a good chunk of his senior year.

The glass is half full!

It's sad that this is all we have to excited about this time of the season! No offense to Schultz...

Yes it is, and you Badger fans will have some explaining to do if the Badgers aren't right in the mix next March for the final year of the WCHA as we know it. You gotta do this. Do not. Do not--let Minnesota be there with no Wisconsin. I know you are moving on to something better, but don't leave the party with nothing but Suzies and Gophers standing there looking awkwardly for their keys.

I'm excited about our ladies...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

It is not televised :(

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

So you will be watching the game? Right?

Absolutely!

I stream it from my laptop to the big screen via an hdmi cable. Works great.

Bucky vs Goldy with a natty on the line!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

No it's not, which sucks, but it's streamed free by the NCAA.

I just don't understand why the ncaa doesn't make it a priority to get events like this on tv. I read somewhere some posted a bunch of rights crap about who owns what rights, the bottom line is once the ncaa sells the rights, they just don't give a crap if it gets televised or not. It just seems crazy we get the opportunity to watch 150 ncaa playoff baseball games, the entire lacrosse tourney, but the final 4 for hockey is online only. This is such a joke.

So why no word on Schultz signing yet? Is he not interested in joining the Ducks? Is that the real reason why he came back?

gotcha, I wasn't thinking of winning percentage in regard to this question previously (worst wcha finish).

Congrats to the Gophers on their 4-2 victory. Both these teams had a great season.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

So Bob MacKenzie thinks Schultz will be the 3rd most sought after F/A this summer, after Ryan Suter :) and Vanek. That just blows my mind. The Quacks must be pretty p/o'ed he stayed in school this year.

I was watching the Rangers/Wings and the NBC color guy did a real nice job of mentioning Smith, McD and Turris were all former 1st rounders from UW. He also quickly threw in Stepan went to UW as well. Unfortunately, Smith let a Ranger get in behind him on a shift and the pass just didn't connect. He won't last long if he doesn't play D first and have his head on a swivel.

Part of it is that Schultz will be 1.) cheap on an entry level contract (~1M/year for 3 years) and 2.) have a TON of upside potential. ZERO downside for the team signing him considering what some of the vets get 1M/year for.

Did you mean Parise and Suter?
