Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

“You’ve got the best women’s coach in the country and someone who has proven it,” Alvarez said of Johnson, a four-time national coach of the year. “Someone that’s a great fit in our athletic program, it’s very important (to keep him).
“You hate to make a change when we’ve got the best women’s program in the country. The leadership and his contribution to the entire department is very special.”
Alvarez admitted he couldn’t compete with what Penn State was able to offer a men’s coach.
“First thing I told him, ‘I cannot compete with a men’s job at Penn State financially. I can’t do that.’ We were able to make some adjustments, but not to that extent.”

Money talks, bull**** walks.......sometimes! ;) Thanks Magic!

Craig Smith with a goal in the 5-1 win for the USA over Austria this morning at the World Championships.

Looks like Smith is playing on Team USA's top line with Stepan and Blake Wheeler. That line had 2 goals and Stepan added two assists.

McDonagh and Skille went pointless. Gardiner didn't dress.

Apparently you can only list so many players eligible for each round and Gardiner and Miele were the 2 players for the US that can't play the first 3 games. Too bad Bruckler turned down the invite from Austria or may of seen him in net against all the Badger USA players. Smith should be gaining a ton of confidence for next year. McDonaugh and Stepan both are going to see major miniutes with the NHL lite roster. Next game Monday 9 am on Versus.

Team USA live on versus right now. Down 2-0 to Norway after the first period. Craig Smith playing on Team USA's top line with Stepan and Blake Wheeler. Skille on a line with Chris Porter and Paul Gaustad. McDonagh paired up with Kevin Shattenkirk. Like Badgers1 already mentioned, Gardiner won't be playing the first 3 games.

Thanks for posting this! McDonagh and Stepan are studs, thank God they are out of college.

USA hockey wins again this time 4-2 against Norway. Skille nets one and Smith scores for the second time in two games. This one was a nice little tip play on a pass from former Badger Derek Stepan

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I'm wondering why Bernd Bruckler wasn't on the Austrian roster... he had a decent season on a pretty mediocre TN Novgorod team (48 GP, .904 SV%, 2.67 GAA, 4 SO).

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

He declined an offer like many American players did.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I just received word from Wisconsin recruit Brad Navin that he will be a Badger next year. He's taking Jordy Murray's open roster spot.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

This is going to be a common trend as long as Butters is here. I had heard from some people earlier in the year that his recruiting philosophy is to bring in kids straight out of high school. Too worried about players not playing proper roles in the USHL.

Daly
LaBate
Navin
Wittchow?

I'm not sure that I agree with that philosophy. I think that they year of experence in the USHL along with an aditional year of physical and mental maturity is very important to having a sucessful fershman season. Time will tell if that is the correct path to follow.

I thought Schuey was the recruiting guy?

I find it hard to believe Butters would have that much pull with Eaves to have Eaves change his philosophy. One positive is maybe the straight from HS guys will be less likely to bolt until their jr year as Eaves develops them, on the other hand, a guy like Navin may rot on the bench til he's a sr anyway. You never know with Eaves.

I wanted Linaker....so he's out I guess?

Here's the link to the story and the Tweet I posted on Navin heading straight to the Badgers yesterday when I broke the story. I updated the post with more information last night (It was tough to post a lot of info via my phone while driving through a hail storm....).

This was my first thought, by bringing them in right away I think you're more likely to have 3-4 year players. Thereby getting better chemistry and hopefully more consistency.

Is there really any difference between having them for 2-3 years with a year of juniors or 3-4 years if they don't see much ice time as a freshman? Players are going to enter and leave the program every year, I just don't see this move as improving chemistry or consistency, particularly since consistency is often derived from experience, something that true freshmen are lacking in. I really think that the year in Juniors is valuable experience (both life and hockey) and that the vast majority of players will benefit from it even if they don't play the role that UW expects them to.
