And you're a part of a relatively small minority - someone not going to games but who is a big fan who very actively follows the team. Most other people won't be buying all the tickets instantaneously.

Yep. It'll take time. If they want to schedule games down here in Georgia, I'll definitely take groups of people to those. heh.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

A couple more thoughts:

Regarding first impressions, I'm really hoping they can scrape together some kind of a band and not leave it empty like the last football championship conflict. Tonight, too...I'm not sure when they're traveling, but I remember a Friday when the bare minimum stayed behind on the Friday night for the volleyball 2nd round match.

Also, a matchup with Omaha should be fun. Even beyond their actual team, I think of them as being an established, relevant program, despite starting in the '90s. Those few years in the WCHA were when I was getting into UW hockey, so that - and knowing they have a strong fan base and competitive team - has always made them a more relevant opponent in my mind. This year's matchup should be high scoring, right? Too bad Frederic is out.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

RE: today's luncheon...I would guess about 100 fans there....Dean Blais was funny as hell. After years of seeing this guy stand stoically behind an opponent's bench, it was quite amusing to see another side. Posick was the host: folks this guy is good. (We're very fortunate to have him, Matt Lepay, and Wayne Larrivee in our market.) He knew stats and game situations that blew my mind. Even Tony G looked to him for an occasional ensuring nod. Saw some old friends and shared some old time stories. Met some new friends and some former players my family and I were fans of. All of them took time to talk. I never met Adam Burish before very nice guy; very friendly. When we were talking, Mrs. MCR was staring at him like I stare at Sofia Vergara. I had to remind her Burish is only a handful of years older than MCRJr....like that mattered.

Regarding Coach Granato; all I can say is, if my surgically repaired knees were able, I would've strapped on my old Bauer Custom Supreme 2000's, grabbed by Northland Pro, (yes I said Northland Pro, punks), my visor-less and cage-less CCM bucket, and gone out and kicked some ***. If you can, I highly recommend you attend the next one when the goofs invade Madison.

EDIT: The BTHC was mentioned.....there was a lot of mumbling and booing in the room.

Gonna be a rough night. No band, at all. And it looks like a pretty sizable group made the trip from Omaha, looks like they fill up most of section 210.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

What happened to the btn feed?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Ok, the boys woke up. What a turnaround in play. Ton of stellar chances and they quit getting trapped deep in their own end. Easily could have a couple more on the board for Bucky. Let's keep that up in the third and get a comeback win.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Man, Kunin can't buy a goal tonight. Boys have been excellent the last two periods.

Those two facts (the canned PA music and being out-cheered at times by visiting fans) really kills what little atmosphere we have left in that building.

The aura of Badger hockey is dead, fellas. It'll take a lot more to bring it back, and I've a feeling it'll be like new Blackhawks fans if it ever does come back.

What was was, and will never be again.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Shots end up 50-30 after being down 15-12 in the 1st, most of which Bucky got on their early PP. Really dominated play the last two.

Kunin and Besse both had lots of great chances, glad to see Bess get the tip because he has deserved a bit more. He's elevated his play of late and it bodes well for the future. Hughes has come so far since coming in as a 17 year old. Tischke gets the 1st star and his 1st goal. I think Peter is just turning into a really good D.

Fun game to watch, looking forward to tomorrow. And looking forward to adding Freddy back into this line up soon.

I think this is an excellent assessment of how far off the radar Wisconsin Hockey has fallen.

Tony Granato has done an amazing job with selling the program and attempting to rebuild the fanbase and I think he can get it done but even when they get back to 10k+ average attendance it will never be what we used to have. But having said that, there is room for new traditions to begin and I think I'm more optimistic than I've been in the past that maybe some old cheers can come back and will sound fresh today.

Also...maybe it's time to ignite talk of re-starting the Badger Hockey showdown. Either hold it in Milwaukee or Green Bay or rotate it through the bigger cities? For about 10 years the Showdown was a huge event in Milwaukee and it really showcased high level hockey to a casual sports fanbase that doesn't otherwise see that in person.

Thoughts??

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Let me be the first to tell you: no one in Green Bay gives a **** about badger hockey. Not even the badger alums.

Wow...I guess I should know that considering they don't seem to draw well there when they play NMU...but if they played a showdown weekend you don't think they could sell out the Resch?

Maybe I'm looking at this with hockey tinted glasses because the Showdown lost fans almost immediately after Wisconsin began going to bowl games regularly so maybe that's just a ship that has sailed...:(

I wouldn't go that far. I've been saying for over a year that UW hockey as we know it died, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect it to be revived. Even in the last 2 years, that something different (you know what I'm talking about) about the student section was still there (just scaled down in size, unfortunately). I was also a basketball season ticket holder, and even when they went from very good (which for some reason students never appreciated) to going to final fours, it never really got that something different that the hockey student section had (I heard the same things from friends who only casually followed the hockey team). There have been flashes in the pan where I really felt like I was taken back in time 5 years. While it's completely different now, it's still salvageable, because hockey fans will continue to come through. We just need them to care about UW hockey, and that's a slow introduction process. That's part of the reason why I (and many other fans) still have student section tickets...there's a gap that needs to be bridged.

This was going to be a throwaway weekend in terms of atmosphere, just like the volleyball/hockey/B1G football conflict 2 years ago. It's unfortunate, but it's the way it is. I'm definitely unhappy about the band being gone, and I'm going to be disappointed with the crowd tomorrow, I'm sure. Tonight, we did reasonably well, all things considered. Really, the Omaha fans only started out-cheering UW fans in OT...they had been saving their breath for much of the game; nobody around me was doing that, especially after singing "Hot Time" entirely a cappella; they didn't play it. They were vocal early on, but they got drowned out pretty quickly whenever that happened, except for one or two times when everyone was literally trying to stay quiet to hear what on earth they were saying. (Just like [something], we want seven?) Unfortunately, nobody in the second deck was standing and being active, so depending on where you were in relation to the fans and the glass, they'd probably sound a lot louder, and you wouldn't have heard the numerous "uno" jokes. :D

It's worth worrying about, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Let's see what happens in the second half of the year when people remember this sport exists.

I'll add Milwaukee to that statement. For the AHL Admirals, they averaged under 6,000 for 15 years at Bradley and are under 5,000 at their "new" olds digs, the Mecca.

Keep the Badgers in Madison.

solo and EODS, I agree, the KC is less exciting than a morgue and it's a ****ing shame b/c the ice product is world's better. I'm worried about atmosphere, but, as recently posted, I'm holding out to see what happens in a few weeks and into the new year.

I probably have the least firsthand experience living in WI outside of the Madison area, but even I've gotten the sense that anyone who follows UW hockey outside of this market is someone who would be going out of their way to follow it anywhere, like gwhinwi!

Attendance lags behind success, and that's especially true in this situation, where there's not a ton of coverage for the casual fans who don't know the difference between Luke Kunin and Cullen Hurley.

It really is a shame that when someone comes to the Kohl Center these days, they'll see a competitive game on the ice, but they don't get the whole package. I know I'm not alone here in wanting fans to get that whole package when coming to games so they see what we already know abiut UW men's hockey.

Also, good game last night, eh?

Yes! Unfortunately I'm bailing on the team tonight to watch Badger football in my cave, but I'm leaving soon to watch the women's team beat the goofs at a sold out LaBahn. Note to basketball fans...leave early so we have somewhere to park!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

I was very impressed with Berry last night. The goaltending is in good hands.
