Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Granato has said it's not a goal of the team to play a physical brand of hockey. I saw the third period and they had some good chances. Too bad the pp didn't connect. Also bear in mind on the flow of the game the lines never practiced together with Fredric s injury h happening in Thursday's practice. 6-4 isn't bad bad record , probably better than any of us thought at this point. I think the Fredric injury kinda torpedo d the shot at 7-3.

That was a very poor display of hockey no matter the brand they were trying to play, injury or otherwise.

Too many mistakes, like the 2nd goal. Hard to play defensive when you don't have the inside position on the attacker. They seem to relax too much on the play away from the puck, then when the puck gets to their position, it's too late and the attackers have the upper hand.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

This is me and my dad's first game in a few years. Not real impressed so far. This team is not physical. At least not tonight. Their goalie gets knocked out of the game by their player (intentional or not doesn't matter) and the badgers don't do anything to respond? You don't have to cheap shot a guy but at least make some hits or do something to fire up the team. And the crowd.

Going out of your way to make hits for the sake of making hits isn't a worthy goal if you want to win games. That's why I was so glad to hear Osiecki talk (after the SLU/Clarkson trip) about how he's slowly getting the players to understand that simply hitting guys doesn't win games, and I knew exactly the kind of play he was talking about, which I have seen plenty of times in previous years watching from the end of the rink: Opponent makes an outlet pass, completely uncontested. Badger keeps skating at the guy exactly as before. They both hit the boards, and there's a loudish cheer, and I think "meh," because the play had already been made.

I haven't gone back and looked at game tape, but the Badgers were doing fine in the physical battles. (In Greenway's case especially, mostly for better, and a couple of times for worse.)

Merrimack took some dumb penalties near the end of the game, and it was a great illustration of why the Badgers shouldn't have taken any dumb penalties to "respond" to Jurusik getting hurt.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Some thoughts from attending the game Sat night.

1 - Never experienced a quieter KC. Very disappointing after the good start to the season, but the combination of deer hunting and (to be honest) not exactly a glamorous opponent obviously played a large role. Small, quiet crowd.

2 - I will not question the effort - but the energy level seemed low for UW. Merrimack looked considerably quicker and more aggressive. There were times that it felt like Merrimack had 6 or 7 skaters out there....they were everywhere. We looked sluggish.

3 - Hit on Jurusik was cheap IMO, but not as cheap as the Merrimack goalie delivering numerous shots after the whistle last night. What was up with him/that?

4 - This game reminded me that there will be some growing pains this season. We are still trending in the correct direction, but there are going to be games like this one against so-so opponents, but there will also be games when we will beat somebody we maybe shouldn't.

It just stinks a little more when the growing pains come when you are there in the building to see them....

To your second point, to be fair Merrimack did get caught with having 9 players on the ice. :D

When I typed that, I figured someone would point out that they DID get a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty - so yes, they did technically do that. But they constantly seemed to be providing pressure forward in attack while not leaving themselves vulnerable to a counterattack. If looked like it was frustrating to play against.

I think it's all well and good that they're not neccessarily taking on the role of "hitters" but at the same time they can do a much better job of not being the "hittees." Guys were getting smashed at times because they were caught not moving their feet. Just as well to put targets on the Badger sweaters against a hard hitting team like Merrimack if they aren't going to skate.

Pretty much agree with most of this except I think the Jurusic injury was more of an accident then cheap. They were tied up in front and went down, just happened to be on Matt's knee. Fortunately, 3-4 weeks means that it's likely not too terrible of an injury.
Growing pains is exactly what came to my mind as well. I think it wasn't hard early on Friday and they were complacent coming out. Instead of it being easy, they got punched in the mouth from the puck drop in the first and didn't respond very well to it.

One of the biggest problems was D not handling the forecheck and getting the puck out. Merrimack was clogging the neutral zone and our D would just stop and look for the outlet with a forechecker skating in on them. They can't stop. Either pass or skate it and put it in deep if it's not there and let the F's go get it. Which is what you have to do if they're just going to clog the middle. I didn't see Tischke or Hurley do this much, but the rest all did. (or turned it over on a bad pass) In fact I thought Hurley had a very good weekend and made a case for himself. I thought McGuire didn't have a good weekend. Growing pains.

Big test coming, would be nice to get Freddy back but haven't heard anything encouraging.

It's over a week out, but is anybody going to the luncheon on Dec 2 at noon (Coliseum Bar) , put on by Wisconsin Hockey Backers?

I want to, but can't due to being buried at work. I know Tony Granato and Dean Blais are both speaking. Sounds like fun.

Seeing both games in person, the talent discrepancy between CC and Denver seemed to be night and day. It was nice that the 5 min PP was about to get us back in the game, but DU was clearly the better team.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

They're a good team. Nothing wrong with a close (even if it was only close in the box score) loss to a team like that.
