Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

I thought so as well.... SOG is not always indicative how game was played, but in this case I believe so. RIT had 6, 4, 4 SOG by period... possession time was vey lopsided as well. Did appear in 3rd Badgers changed gameplan a bit.

Yeah, I don't want to pick on RIT, I'm sure they're better than they played yesterday, but the game wasn't even close.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Congrats on your win. We lost that one when the Wisconsin bus made it to the stadium safely. ;)

Tremendous display by you guys. Best of luck against BC. I'll be cheering for the Badgers.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

I look at the RIT game as a program win. With RIT, we had the odd situation where I don't think anybody really knew how good they might be. They had mature players, were playing great, and having not played many games against top teams... well... who really knew what to expect from them? Our boys have expectations of playing on the big stage, and are expected to perform on the big stage from the time they get here. They went out in the first ten minutes with poise and played the way they are capable of. No doubt RIT is a much better team than the score showed but when it went against them early it was over. Had we gone down one or two early I had confidence our guys wouldn't have been shaken, and would have come back. A great win for Wisconsin Hockey.

I'm glad BC won big as well. We want to beat the best, and when Bucky wins Saturday night there won't be any doubt about who the best team in the nation is. If the boys go out and play Wisconsin Hockey right from the start, they'll bring #7 home.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

This is from NCAA.com:

"Wisconsin thrashes RIT, 8-1:
The Tigers were adamant in the post-game press conference that the score of the game was not indicative of the gap between the teams, with the five-minute major to Mark Cornacchia the yielded two power-play goals making a major difference in the momentum of the game. It's true that the penalties made a difference, but the key to the Badgers' domination of the Tigers was that they knew that RIT was too dangerous to be allowed to hang around. Making sure that the Atlantic Hockey champs didn't get an early goal, and then piling on to go up 4-0 before the Cornacchia penalty was indicative of how prepared the Badgers were."

Really? I thought, and it was VERY evident, that Eaves called off the dogs in the 3rd period. It could have been 2-4 goals worse.

Their was a period in the 2nd period, before RIT scored the PP goal that the RIT players looked totally demoralized and as if they were ready to quit.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Denver ruined my pool. I had them winning it all. :o

WHAT! I can't believe you publically admitted that to your fellow Badger bretheren. What were you thinking? Were you drunk, did you just throw darts at the bracket, ask your dog to pea on the team that will win it all?

Sorry for losing it there.

LET'S GO RED!!!!!!

I was impressed with Denver when they were at the Kohl Center. I thought that they were very talented. Then I watched their lackluster performance at the Final Five and I figured they'd come back with a chip on the shoulder. My bad.

I rarely pick Wisconsin to win it all. I've watched them all year and tend to remember their weaknesses better than their strengths (it's a character flaw, I know). Also, I kind of view it as a win/win. If Wisconsin wins it all, I'm estatic. I don't really care about a steekin' pool. But, if Wisconsin loses I've still got something to root for.

But, for the record, yes. I was drunk.

After the Badgers ousted RIT, 8-1, in the NCAA National Semifinal game Thursday evening, Wisconsin (28-10-4) finds itself in the national title game Saturday at 6 p.m. CT, where the squad will square off against the Boston College Eagles (28-10-3).

In Wisconsin's semifinal game, seven different Badgers tallied a goal, and junior blueliner Brendan Smith (Mimico, Ontario) tied a tournament record by notching five assists. The Badgers were firing on all cylinders in the game, having outshot RIT, 37-14, at game's end. Wisconsin also capitalized on nearly half of its power-play opportunities.

Defensively, junior net minder Scott Gudmandson (Sherwood Park, Alberta) was a star in the nets for Wisconsin. Turning away all but one RIT attempt, his record climbed to 20-4-4 on the season to lead the Cardinal and White. As a team, the Badgers were relentless on defense, as they only allowed eight shots in the final two periods combined and halted three of RIT's four power-play chances.

Wisconsin's high-powered offense and unyielding defense will need to be just as sharp in the championship game against BC. Having scored 16 points in its last two games, Boston College has proven it can light up the scoreboard as well. Led by sophomore leading scorer Cam Atkinson (28-23=51), the Eagles enter the championship on a 12-game unbeaten streak.

Boston College is no stranger to the Badgers when it comes to national championship games. Back in the Badgers' 2006 National Title campaign, Wisconsin bested BC, 2-1, to bring the title back to Madison.

Since that game, the schools have battled three other times, with the Eagles coming out victorious in all three contests.

Wisconsin heads into the national title game having lost only five times since the calendar turned to 2010. This is thanks in large part to the prolific offensive production by the Badgers. Wisconsin is the only team in the country to boast four 50-or-more point scorers. The four scorers all find themselves in the top-13 in the nation in terms of points-per-game.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

“Our philosophy always remains the same, that we want to get that second wave of attack from our defensemen,” said Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves. “We have the thought process that we want to get [defensemen] involved in the rush. We want to get them involved in the attack.”

Remember all the left wing lock, trap conversations. What a difference recruiting makes. Coach looks like brilliant right now when before people were all over him. I didn't mind the defensive mind set but this is nice too. After Eaves first two years, who would have thought that UW would lead the WCHA in scoring.

I do think that a few of Eaves teams have underachieved but he is a tremendous coach and UW is very fortunate to have him. He has adjusted nicely to the college game and to the college athlete. Thank you Mike.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

'atta boy Blake. :)

In the past I have been sort of hard on him for not being half the leader Burish was...and maybe he wasn't at the time...but he's definitely grown into a great leader on and off the ice, and I couldn't be happier for him. Helluva player and sure seems like a genuinely good guy. Thanks for coming back this season Bam Bam!

Just my thoughts. Ditto!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Congrats to Geoffrion and Wisconsin. Although I was hoping for Nyquist, there is no shame at all in losing to Blake. Good luck tomorrow night

Thanks Maine2010. Appreciate the good words. I think most of us in Badger hockey nation are pretty proud. I was glad to hear that Nyquist is coming back. I saw a few Maine games this year on TV and he's really something.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

In a loss to MN early in the season I sat right behind the bench. Everyone looked flat. Except for Blake. He was getting to the puck first, hustling like crazy on every play, and leading by example while we were getting killed. The boys just didn't seem to be following at that point, but Blake kept going 100 miles an hour that game, and all season. (And still is.) While there's credit to go around, there's no doubt in my mind that the Badgers are in the finals because of the effort, character and skill of Blake Geoffrion, a guy that has led by personal example all year.
Blake is physically gifted and a skilled player, but this is a guy who, if he had below average skills, would still be quality hockey player and the guy you'd want leading your team. A supremely deserving guy.

Congratulations to Blake Geoffrion, Wisconsin's first ever Hobey Baker award winner!

ditto. I've come down on Blake and the team at various points this season but watching these NCAA playoff games, Blake and the team have really shown me a level of grit I haven't seen all season....either that or I've been far to pessimistic:p

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Geoffrion is 4th on the team in scoring...I wonder if a non-defenseman (or even a D-man) has ever been 4th or lower on his team in scoring and won the Hobey?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Congrats to Geoffrion!

The boys looked good last night, totally dominating, obviously. Tomorrow will be a tough game. Let's go red!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Congratulations to Blake! A well-deserved honor. We can finally put that "no one from Wisconsin has ever won the Hobey" thing to rest. :)

And the UVM fans wish he would go ;) that said good luck tomorrow night as we want to keep our string of losing our final game of the year to the eventual national champs alive. 2008 last loss to BC in the HE Finals. 2009 last loss to BU in NCAA FF. 2010 last loss to UW in NCAA 1st round ...does the streak continue? Only if you win it all
