Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Catching up on Wisconsin Hockey Part 2, the title of which I rather like.

-I do have a flamethrower. If I can find it in the basement, perhaps I could lend it out for a fee. Or beer.

-Glad Schultz is eligible. A rank ordering of the defensemen is not necessarily helpful in assessing the loss to the team had Schultz been ineligible. Of the D sitting out each game, Johnson is solid and the other two scared the crap out of me regularly when they did get playing time last year. Johnson hasn't been a big pp guy when he's been playing. Swapping a good D who is skilled on the pp for a decent D who's not a pp guy is a loss, even if the replacement is defensively solid.

-Sad to hear of the Ice Muskies problems. Starting that team up may not have been smart, but they had a cool logo and we found the one game we attended highly entertaining. (Highlights: standing room on glass near beer stand; one fan who got an opposing player to yell back at him.)

-Getting pumped for the next two weekends. Both are big series- we know this weekend vs Denver is big... and with Duluth up in the PWR at the moment I'm increasingly pumped for that, too. I'll be in Duluth with a large and mostly drunken crew, and am already practicing taking a deep breath and reminding myself that I want to avoid being tossed out of the game more than I want to attempt to harm the loon.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

I didn't think you guys were that high on Schultz. The numbers really don't make it look like he is doing well. You guys know hockey a lot better than I do, though, so that is good to know. I've never played organized hockey because it was too much money for my parents growing up so we just played on the lake or whatever. I also haven't followed the sport as long as you guys have so I guess Schultz is doing a lot better than I thought he was. Thanks for the insight.

Numbers for defensemen are rather misleading.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Supposedly Eaves tried a "tactic" on the Saturday CC game that didn't work. I wonder what that was. Anybody pick anything up that saw the game?

EAVES: Well, first of all, I think it's, people don't realize what a tough task it is to beat a team back-to-back nights for a couple of reasons. First of all, they know what you do, you know what they do. Second of all, and probably more importantly is the emotional edge that the team gets when they lose at home. We shut them out at home. At the same level, our emotional level, though, we feel pretty good about ourselves. And so to get to your question, where does the ultimate responsibility lie, I take some of that responsibility. I tried a tactic Saturday that I thought would work. It obviously didn't work. I take some of the responsibility. Some of the responsibility goes to our leadership core, and then the rest of the responsibility goes to the guys, the rest of the guys. So in looking at that, I said after the game it's one of the great challenges of coaching in the WCHA, that task of beating a team back-to-back. And in looking at it, watching video, I talked with the captains yesterday, and will speak with them again today, I think there's a lesson to be learned there, and we'll address that and hopefully the next time it come up that we are better suited to handle that challenge.

QUESTION #2: Just quick follow-up. What was the tactic that you tried Saturday that you said . . .

EAVES: Well, that's something I'm going to keep in house. I hope you respect that. I think it's something that, you know, there's that intimacy of the locker room that I think, that I need to protect, and I want to address it with our captains and move forward.

Ran into coach Oz at MIA last night and he mumbled something about a live chicken, three drops of blood from an unbaptized child and a tennis ball, but wouldn't elaborate.

The tactic SHOULD have been, "...let's play like we did on Friday night.....".
While I'm not one to question a D-1 coach, why would they need a "tactic" on Saturday after serving up a doughnut on Friday night?

Voting is now open for the annual Badgers Hockey 7th Man Award from WPT.

"Vote for the UW men's hockey player you think gives his all on the ice and best represents the Badger trademarks of team spirit and good sportsmanship."

@The Hallucination: You have a flame thrower???

Yup! bigus got it for me, I think he ordered it online and it's technically an "ice melting propane torch." Sadly, I do not find opportunities to use it, not having my own yard from which to melt snow & ice. We were going to bring it camping once and use it to light campfires*, but then there was some drought issue and we couldn't have campfires. So as awesome as it is to have a flamethrower, I'm kind of lame in that I haven't actually USED my flamethrower. If I buy a house soon, though, maybe next winter I can melt part of the yard clear for the dog to run around in!

*Because it's cooler than a lighter, that's why!

The tactic SHOULD have been, "...let's play like we did on Friday night.....".

I would have gone with the same strategy, but maybe fans are lousy tacticians.

As the old saying goes, if they can't stop it, keep doing it.

Since you're not being specific, we'll need to carpet bomb. ;)

That rink sucks, btw, as do many of the rinks around here. Used to play men's league there and my son's team plays against SP teams.

If you think it sucks now, you should have seen it when it was built. There was no glass around the boards (chain link fence). The Zamboni was a modified tractor (like before the Zamboni was invented). It was still a better option for everyone than driving to Madison all the time. I was lucky enough to have worked there after they got a real Zamboni, much easier to operate.

Here's a better use of this flamethrowing device. Find a gopher hole in your yard (be sure to buy a house with a yard that has some living in it). Set up the flamethrowing device's throwing end right outside the gooher hole. Run a string from the trigger to a camoflauged spot in your yard where you can hide. Once the little rodent pops his/her head out of the hole, pull the string and burn the little bastard to death. :)

That goes for the lines as well. I'm always bewildered why Eaves would change the Saturday lines even though they beat the same team 6-0 the night before. If they lost or if it was week to week for matchup purposes I wouldn't have any problem with it, but changing them when you slaughtered the team the night before doesn't make any sense to me.

That's because you don't understand mountain climbing or hitching a horse to a cart. Hell, I bet you wouldn't even know how to turn the volume up.

In Eaves we trust. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Well, for all the talk about Schultz and his importance to the team, he had a horrible game. Flubbed the puck at the point numerous times. Made some dicey passes in our zone and in general looked out of whack. Obviously the stress of this week took its toll on him and he'll most likely be much better tomorrow. Can't blame him one bit but doesn't change the fact that he struggled tonight.

Overall our defense looked like my men's pickup groups defense. You know where you basically have one d-man or if you do have two, they are usually both caught behind the net or out of position. Horrible coverage between the face-off dots for most of the night. It was obvious by the third period that it was a point of emphasis as they did a better job and were constantly looking around for the DU players.

Overall, the second really bad game by our DOTA in a row.

Fix that and we win this game without question so here's to a better effort tomorrow night.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Well, Schultz just got a lot more important, given how much pain B. Smith was in. I can't imagine he'll be available for Saturday night.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Another C Smith penalty leads to the 3rd DU goal. It wasn't a horrible penalty, but it was a killer.

Positive on C Smith, that guy can play. I love the fact that he moves the puck quickly with long clean passes. His speed and vision also impressive. He's gonna be a great one.

I don't think UW's d played all that poorly. They limited the # of DU shots nicely. I didn't see any clean odd man rushes where DU went from the redline in. UW could get out of their D zone easier than DU could. On the first DU goal, a UW forward went for the steal at the redline, allowing DU more space and skaters in the UW zone. Bad idea. I missed his #. The 2nd goal was great play by DU. There was a UW player with the goal scorer, that spin move was sweet. 3rd goal, UW was dead tired at the end of the Smith penalty and yes someone got crossed up and let the DU guy open. It was a great shot though. But in OT, the D zone coverage was BADDD. Overall I'd give the D zone play a B+ in regulation and an F in OT.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

With our tie and Duluth's loss, we end up at 3rd in the PWR after Friday's action. A win tonight puts us in the drivers seat for a #1 seed in the tournament. I'll be in section 308 if anybody wants to come and make fun of me. :D

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

As it stands right now. For the first round of the final five playoffs, UND would travel to UW and UMinn would go to St Cloud. That is rough but there is still a long way to go. UW needs to get into the top 3, which they should be able to do since the top 5 are separated by 4 points.

These next 3 games against DU and UMD are big for the badgers. They need to show how strong they really are.

Its still 2 months off but the badgers need to make another nice run

Go RED!!!!!!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

After next week's matchup with the Bulldogs, the schedule really softens up. We get Michigan, Minnesota State, and SCSU all at home for 3 weeks straight, and then go on the road to Tech after ending the season at Minnesota. Getting a win tonight would be huge and then going for a spilt in Duluth would put us in good position for the top 3 if not winning the cup itself.

Denver - W
@ Minnesota-Duluth - L
@ Minnesota-Duluth - W
Michigan (nc) - W
Minnesota State - W
Minnesota State -W
St. Cloud State - W
St. Cloud State - L
@ Michigan Tech - W
@ Michigan Tech - W
vs Minnesota - W
@ Minnesota - L

That would put us at 37 conference points, and 38 points was good enough to take the McNaughton last year so we'd be right in the mix with the above results, which I think are conservatively optimistic.
