Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

If anything it lets Thurber consider his transfer options sooner rather than later. So in that regard, I'm happy that it is taken care of.

I also think that Eaves didn't want the distraction of a Thurber decision hanging in the air when the team is trying to focus on winning a National Title.

Not saying you're wrong, just looking for possible motives to make the move right now.
I don't really buy either possibility.

1.) Thurber has always been able to consider his transfer options, so I don't buy that excuse.

2.) I don't really see that as being a factor, if it really was you just make the suspension effective until either the end of the season, or the legal matters are resolved.

In either case, the decision to leave the team would be with Thurber prior to having the legal matters resolved. At least then it wouldn't appear that the UW held a kangaroo court headed by Eaves with the sole purpose of railroading off a player to open his scholarship money.

But I like kangaroos...and I think they have the best kind of court. :(

You have rights in court. Playing hockey, however, is not a right. The preponderance of evidence is more than enough to get you kicked off a team, and I'm sure Mike Eaves has far more evidence to judge than any of us.

I concur blockski.

as for the comparison w/Eaves...Eaves pushing a mouthy player 5-6 years ago is out-of-line but as far as we know nothing of the sort has happened since.

a kid committing battery, is quite another, not to mention *** are the other 2 misdemeanors for? breaking and entering that kids dorm room or something???

generally when this happens (coach removes player prior to info getting out) the transgression is severe.

as for football since I brought it up as a comparison. I don't care about beliema kicking 1-2 guys off. NOW...he has too. his A was on the line because he was going out and partying with the guys amongst other transgressions that maybe 18-year old kids can get away with but no effen way a coach should. the overall picture of UW football over the last 15-17 years is you can get away with quite a bit...nick davis, the guy who knocked over the pizza delivery person, there's far too many to bring up. some kids were "let go", many more were not. many more.

Shocker - Eaves forcing a kid out who doesn't light up the score board. Something tells me if it were Smith, McD, or Stepan we would have heard how kids are young and make mistakes and we need to let them learn from these mistakes. But, with a scrub like Thurber he kicks him off so he can find 3 more Canadians to offer scholly's to... which ever 2 don't work out he will pull the Scholly's and the cycle continues. The NCAA needs to step in a protect these kids, they should take some scholarships away from UW as a penalty or something.

The crazy thing is kids keep committing to UW, you'd think this would catch up eventually....you can't make this stuff up.

NCAA should take away scholarships away from UW for kicking a player off the team for committing battery and disordery conduct? Yeah...that sounds reasonable.

1) Kind of like underage drinking, when the bar owners know your underage?

2) Yes they should. Make them take classes on how to conduct yourself so as not to jeopardize your scholarship.

3) and kids keep leaving UM in mid season.

I realize that this is a troll but this isn't the first time that I've heard this said about us. The part about getting Canadians.

Do we have this reputation more so than others? North Dakota has 12 , we have 6. Not that I care either way but a Denver fan said this a few weeks ago also and they have more than us too.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

As Chuck pointed out, what matters more than either the defensive or offensive numbers alone, is a teams goal differential.

Because the tournament is one-and-done, the flucuations about the mean goal differential are also important. The goal differentials for the two teams are: (2006, 1.52 +/- 2.58) (2010, 1.56 +/- 2.95)

I have been a Badger hockey fan since the late 70s. I do not have a 2006 obsession. It's simply riskier to count on offense to cover for defense. Not that there is anything to be done about it this year, the team is what it is. And I've been enjoying the offense. But I'll be surprised if this team makes it deep into the tournament. Very pleasantly surprised, but surprised.

Paging Dr. Scooby.

We have a simple math emergency in the Wisconsin thread.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

The key phrase from Eaves that people have left out from the discussion is: "I'm not going to get into the specifics, but what I shared with them was that ... his actions were way too far over the line," Eaves said Monday."

I think any discussion as to what Eaves was thinking is premature until we know exactly what happened, thusly we'll then know what Eaves thinks is "way too far over the line". Until then, any speculation simply hurts both Thurber and Eaves.

Now we may never know what the report said unless someone optains it from the police via some sort of freedom of info legality (Joey V- info on?), because UW won't release the details. Would I like to know what happened? Yes, I am curious. Does me not knowing what happened change any opinions I have of Eaves or Thurber? No.

I personally am comfortable with the situation as it is, meaning it's a private manner between Eaves and Thurber. We have to trust that Eaves did what he thinks is right. Again, I add that speculating on Eaves' "motive" doesn't do anyone any good.

Personally, I am bummed. This kid played in Beaver Dam, the same place my kids played. It was a really neat connection to the UW program for us. I wish Matt the best of luck. Hopefully he learns from this situation and is a better person as he matures because of what happened.
