Gotta love how he reaches for the milk at the end. Now that's a good ol' Wisconsin boy!

Haha...I think that came out before the season, I've seen it before but it is absolutely hilarious regardless.

Edit: Yeah...60 posted it before but it's still great.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

From what I heard at the time (from my father who definitely was not a Shalala fan) was that she came in with a hatred of big time college athletics, and did her best to keep the UW from being oriented towards them. I do not know whether the hire of Richter was a change in attitude or just a fortunate 'mistake' that benefited UW sports.

Well she has gone to Miami and brought that hatred with her because Miami has not been quite as good as they used to.:D

Game. Set. Match.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Agreed. I love what Barry did with the football team, but he DOES NOT deserve the amount of money he is getting paid. Richter totally revamped the athletic department in the 90's with great hirings.(Alvarez, Stu Jackson, Dick Bennett, Bo Ryan, Eaves). Before Richter arrived the ath. dept was at the very bottom of the Big Ten in total revenue. Today, Wisconsin is number 5 in the entire nation in revenue. That's a mind boggling turn around and a whole lot of that has to do with Richter's critical decisions. What exactly has Barry done besides hiring Bielema to deserve getting paid $250,000 more than what Richter did at his peak? Alvarez has asked and received a $50,000 raise 3 out of 5 years he's been an AD yet he's been penny pinching a number of programs in order to save money. I don't get it.

For credit, I'll give most of it to Richter, but Shalala deserves credit for hiring Richter and for letting him do his thing.

As far as Barry goes as an AD, it's unfair to judge him based on his hires, as he's only been the AD for a short time (and there are already so many good coaches in place).

As far as his salary goes, he's not just collecting money as the AD, he's also collecting money to not take a job someplace else. Barry has tremendous value in terms of fundraising. He also doesn't need to be the management guru that Pat Richter was. Barry as an AD is a lot like Barry as a coach - hire excellent subordinates and empower them to do their jobs well. He's got plenty of smart people running the business side of things.

You need different kinds of leaders for different kinds of jobs. Would Barry have been suited to build up the AD like Richter did? No - but that's not the task in front of him anyway, so why criticize him for it? Likewise, there are plenty of CEOs and leaders in business who are tremendous entrepreneurs but really stink and stabilizing their organizations and running them for the long haul. Apples and oranges.

From what I heard at the time (from my father who definitely was not a Shalala fan) was that she came in with a hatred of big time college athletics, and did her best to keep the UW from being oriented towards them. Uh, this his definitely not true. Shalala was the one who convinced folks that it was OK to excel in academics and athletics. She was interviewed prior to the Wisconsin-Miami bowl game this year, and asked about her time at both schools. She mentioned how each school had different strengths and weaknesses, where at Wisconsin they improved athletics as a means to shine a national spotlight on the school as a whole, while at Miami she's using the athletic excellence (and cleaning it up in the process) to improve the school's academic standing.

Also, Shalala did not hire Morton. Morton came on board in 1987, Shalala in 1988.

I think that Barry is doing his job just fine. I just think that he's a tool. He reminds me a lot of the high school football coach who wears polyester sports shorts with a belt everyday who hates(or ignores) everyone who isn't on the team and who views every sport but football as somehow inferior. Every high school has those, so you've all seen them. They usually teach history.

But I digress... I didn't like the way that he handled the media(who were clearly terrified of him) here in town while he was coach. The Badgers would make some boneheaded call in the game and he'd refuse to even acknowledge that the play ever happened. "I don't remember that."

In addition, he really seems to hate doing the PR stuff that comes with his position. In addition to his administrative duties, he is an ambassador for the department. We saw him at the Resch Regional outside Lambeau and just said "Hey Coach, Go Badgers!" on our way to the Bemidji game and he looked like he wanted us to crawl back into the hole that we had climbed out of. We weren't drunk or obnoxious. All he had to do was nod. We started laughing at him as we walked away.

I saw him at the Denver series outside the Kellner Club holding a baby for a picture as some fan took it with a cell phone camera. Barry looked like he'd rather be going through a colonoscopy than posing for that picture. I got a good chuckle out of that.

I've got more, but whatever. Just don't like his public attitude. Maybe he's actually the greatest guy in the world, but he doesn't show it.

Badger senior tri-captain Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) has been given the National Player of the Week laurel by Inside College Hockey. This comes off a seven point weekend in the No. 3 Badgers' series sweep of the Minnesota State Mavericks.

Geoffrion had a goal and three assists to factor in all four of Wisconsin's goals in a 4-3 win Friday night over Minnesota State. He added a pair of goals and an assist in Saturday's 8-4 Badger win, including a power-play goal in the first period that put Wisconsin in front to stay. He leads the WCHA with 21 goals and ranks third on the Badgers with 35 points.

This is Geoffrion's second award this week. On Wednesday, he was given the WCHA Co-Offensive Player of the Week laurel.

I completely agree with this, Blockski. You are a smart man and can see the big picture. It's too early in his tenure to judge. If people insist on being hockey purists [AKA can't handle change] and rip his Big Ten hockey ideas that could end up making the program a lot more money, then so be it.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

"badgers down by four and they're playing like it" (scsu announcer)....that says it all about UW's game tonight.

I just think this team needs an on-ice leader. I don't care if you're down by 8, you keep that peddle down until the whistle blows. Just skating around and giving up doesn't bode well for a playoff run.

That was a brutal game to sit through. For the first time, I didn't get annoyed with people leaving early. The D just didn't feel like playing D tonight. They didn't skate hard to the puck in the corners and cover anyone in front of the net.

ugh...

I don't know exactly how this happens....they've had several games like this now, usually reserved for saturday nights... You can't be a championship caliber team w/out going on some kind of run, and we're still waiting for some evidence this team can win more than 2-3 consecutive games

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

So the up(mostly) and down season continues...

Good game by scsu, but our defensive zone coverage was horrible all night. Two back door tap ins and they just missed on several other occasions. I hope they decide to cover the streaking attacker(:D ) tonight as scsu was attempting that a lot.

The first goal was a horrible misplay by both defenders backchecking to the near post and the goalie overplaying the non-shot and allowing the easiest wraparound I've seen since men's league Monday night. One of those defenders must go to the front of the net. This isn't heady thinking man's hockey. It's a very basic concept.

The second goal saw two defenders allow the only scsu attacker to skate right between them just outside our blue line and get to a loose puck in the slot. That play may look worse than it was coz they may not have known where the puck was, but if they did know, an interference penalty would have been better than just letting him walk right in. And... they SHOULD know where the puck is.

The funny thing is that the last goal was probably the best as it was thrown on net and Goody couldn't see it and it found its way. It did however sneak between Goody and the post although can't remember where the shot originated from so don't know if Goody should have been hugging the post or not.

Also another game of lots of shots, but very few finishes. It's funny coz the other team that I follow, the Blackhawks, has been having the same trouble at times. Last night at least half of our shots were from the perimeter and Dunn could see them all the way in.

We also tried the extra pass or move a bit much and it cost us potential chances.

There, I feel better for venting. THAT was a frustrating game to watch. Better effort tonight and all will be well. :)

On Geoffrion's Twitter yesterday he said, "Headin to pregame skate, preparing for the war not a battle that's taking place tonight..."

Not that anybody who wasn't there would know, but it sounds like either he's the only one who thinks this way or he's full of crap.

From what I can tell some of the leaders say the right things, but it doesn't carry over to the ice very well. Definitely no Burish (or even Dowell or Gilbert) on this club.

Also, Patrick Johnson, out, please...?

...yeah I'm at a loss to understand how these types of games happen, once or twice a season yeah, but it's more consistent than that. this is more like 5-6-7 times already and that's not championship caliber play.

maybe the upperclassmen aren't communicative or vocal, etc., I don't know.

for now the senior class with McMurchy, Burish, Gilbert, Licari, and the seniors on the 90 team are the 2 I look back on and know exactly how they got the job done. there was a sense of purpose there where it seemed that winning it all was the only way that those players were going to go out.

Patrick Johnson....agreed. He consistently does not earn his spot in the lineup but last night was even worse. Mitchell too. I have never seen a guy that large get muscled off pucks as often as he does.

The effort last night was terrible. I stayed until the end (because I always do) but it was difficult. They looked out of gas half way through the game. I do not know what it is going to take to get this team to come out consistently but I hope to hell they figure it out soon.

I stayed to the end out of principal, but was not upset with the people who decided to leave…as I said before. The effort they showed last night warranted a mass exit after the 5th goal.

AND

Yes, Johnson shouldn't be playing over Lee or Podge

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

Before I head out for burgers, beer, and tonight's game, I thought I'd check in.

Stepan's goal really got me fired up, then.......well, SCSU's 2nd goal was as deflating as having a 3 year old walk in on me & MrsMCR; not that it ever happened. :o . (I swear I was showing her the figure 4 leg lock ;) .) I didn't have a good feeling at that point, but hoped we'd fight back. I, like many of you, stayed to the end...I always do. It was difficult to watch.

Got Split?
