Wisconsin Hockey 25-26 Hastings Year 3 - Turning the Corner?

Good win tonight. Good for the confidence to have Knox play well and Brink get his 3rd goal. I like the way he plays.

Zelenov is very close to busting out into a true goal scorer. He and Montgomery were very noticeable all night.

We won. That's what matters most in NPI....and it was nice to see some guys on the ice get ice time and experience. In reality, we should have won by 3 but it def looked we had a few weeks off. Too many times LSSU just skated aroubd or we got caught flat footed to generate high quality chances. Hauser earned his lunch today, without a doubt.

Horbach is prob the most versatile guys Ive seen on the ice for the Badgers in at least 15 years. Guy does everything.

The boys will need to play much better tonight to compete with Western. They looked very good last night. Whitelaw looks like their best player.

That was a bullshit game. The refs gave Western their first goal and then when the Badgers had a similar situation they called no goal immediately.

Also, I didn’t have sound so someone please explain how Zelenov gets knocked out of the game and the Western player doesn’t get 5 and a game?

I seriously hope UW meets this team in the playoffs at full strength and knocks them on their asses all night.

The Badger team that played Ohio State showed up tonight. Western played that same style and they just can't counter it. Didn't help that the two guys that can move the puck are in Minnesota.

Can't imagine any explanation that makes sense on how that first goal was allowed.
The ref loses sight of the puck and therefore calls it a goal. Completely insane.

Random thoughts.....
Overall UW had too many icings. Maybe the strategy to beat a team like WM is to stretch the ice? Missing 2 of your top puck moving D's impact can't be understated. The PP in the first generated a couple grade A chances. I didn't like how they wilted a bit after the first WM goal. Not a lot of pushback initially, eventually they got going again, but it there was a lot of bouncing pucks and plays that looked good at first that fizzled out. Had the PP to start the 3rd and the breakaway in the 3rd; I'll never understand why you don't roof the puck in that situation. Montgomery has such great acceleration. WM is a great team but I'll take the rematch with a full UW roster. Whitelaw is a dick. 3rd team in 3 years. Nice.

They just got bogged down in the neutral zone and really didnt have much offensive zone time in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Referees were pretty bad, but even still we had at least 2 brealaways and rang the post pretty hard. The chances were there.

We got the split, but as said, we def need Hensler, Osburn, and Finley back in the lineup.

They reviewed the Zelenov play and apparently it wasn't a penalty. In real time I thought it looked alot like Schultz hit.

Dick, punk, etc. Yep. It was a clean game overall, but there was definitely animosity towards Whitelaw.

Posted this on Buckyville, and some is mentioned above, but:

Outplayed Western in the first period. Then they got handled in the second and third by the reigning national champions. Good lessons on how to play and finish.

A few takeaways:
  1. Pushing a guy on top of the puck into the goal while blocking the goalie is a new one, and hard for me to understand how that can be allowed. But, in the end you have to overcome that.
  2. Fiserv is a fun venue. We've been to all 5 of these and they have been enjoyable.
  3. Western plays a very similar style to Wisconsin. Hastings is building a winning culture that can do well in March.
  4. Hopefully Zelenov is OK. No weight on his leg when he left after crashing into the boards.
  5. Can't say enough about Jack Horbach. Playing D as a forward and looking the part. Then on the penalty kill he is out there as a forward. Kudos to helping the team and I will miss him next year.
  6. William Whitelaw is and continues to be a punk.

Yeah we were talking about the style of play and it's just like OSU and always a bad matchup for UW.

And boring AF to watch.

I don't understand how Hastings teams seem to struggle when they play a team that plays a lot like they do (just like OSU, but without the clutching and grabbing that OSU does)...... you would think you would know how to counter it. Anyway, Western made adjustments after period 1 as they had zero room to navigate in 2 and 3.

I didn’t think they played too too badly yesterday… obviously the scoring didn’t come and it stinks to lose, and there were a few other imperfections. However it was a very close game and there were times were UW looked pretty in control overall.

Ohio State on the other hand they really dominated like 75% of the weekend and killed us in the shot count as well.

I think to many people are forgetting where this team was a short time ago. This team has played some pretty good hockey this year, but I believe they are still missing a couple pieces. Missing some of your best players to tournaments hurt them bad Monday night.

That being said, I think Hastings is a year or two ahead of schedule as far as the rebuild of this program is concerned

That’s exactly what I thought. I was watching on my phone but they never showed a replay.

At full tilt it sure looked like the Ali hit/shove on Schulz into the boards
