Wisconsin Hockey 20-21 Give Us A Reason To Believe

I went back and watched the 1st period of the Saturday game vs. Michigan and Beydoun gave up 5 JUICY rebounds that were grade A scoring chances. One was how MDSP scored in transition so we got lucky. One Michigan flat missed and Beydoun got lucky. The other 3 Michigan didnt have anyone in the area. Just have to get those rebounds under control.

Was amazed too how many whiffs the team had on passes, and thats exactly what let Michigan score the first goal. But even there the backchecking was indecisive and led to a pass and wide open net. Get the body on the open guy and let the goalie handle a bad angle shot attempt. Have to take those odds.

Need strong fundamentals this weekend. Ill be looking for it.

Wasn't one of the goals an open back door play where the D got caught in no man's land in transition and did not deny the pass through the middle to the backside like they are supposed to?

Yes, it was the first goal. Holloway passed it back from the neutral zone and the catch was flubbed, which led to Emberson being caught in no man's land. But instead of making a decision and covering the backside Michigan skater he kind of half heartedly went to the puckholder. Should have made sure the backside guy was not going to get a shot off. If the UM player with the puck had shot, it was a low angle shot beneath the face off circle. Not saying Beydoun would have stopped it 1 on 1 but Embersons non committal did hang out Baydoun who was trying to play both opportunities instead of one.

More and more talk about going back to Pairwise for the tourney. I can't see how they could possibly to that. Yet if they did, as of today....UMD, Mich, Cloud and Clarkston would be out. That's not good for college hockey.

No way they do the pairwise. The whole reason Pairwise exists is to compare non conference in am "objective" manner that determines a ranking. There havent been non conference games to a large extent so it will have to be left to the polls. I think Wisconsin benefits (fair or unfair) from this bc of being without so many folks during world juniors and covid. the pollsters are essentially giving rhem the benefot on 3 of their losses (ASU and OSU). again, fair or unfair.

That would be insane. The committee is going to actually have to watch games of the bubble teams to see who they should pick, not some computer program. But in the age of fake news, I can easily see them justifying it.

I should make some grasshoppers tonight and we can enjoy them while watching the Irish get torched by the Badgers. Let's go RED!

I just follow the daily banter, yet you are 100% correct: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2021/02/19_QA-With--NCAA-Committee.php

Completely irrelevant comment, yet watching NHL Live right now. All these interview guys have pre-set back grounds. They are interviewing Teemu, actual full basement bar was his background, and it was loaded. Always liked that Finlander, now I love him.

Great to see multiple comebacks on the weekend not just to tie, but to get the lead. The assist of the year is Holloway's on the faceoff to TPB to tie last night. When he absolutely had to get a face off win he did and not only did he win it, it was a perfect pass to TPB. Can't complain too much about a win and a tie on the weekend.

Well, yes I am going to complain. What the crap is going on with D not knowing how to play odd man rushes? Vorlicky should ride the pine for totally flubbing the 2 on 1 he was defending. It's really inexcusable that a D1 defenseman gets spun around like a top like that. Worst case just get your body on the ice and deny the back door pass. Emberson was also defeated on his 3 on 1 but at least he tried to get his stick on the ice to block the pass. Again, just go down if you have to. And of course this all begs the question of where is Mr #2 D man and where is Mr 3rd man high like they are supposed to be playing? 3 mistakes per play to allow those goals. And it's a broken record, every weekend the majority of the GA are in transition, going all the way back to the PSU series. People aren't scoring on the forecheck, it's mostly bad transitional D.

I think Rowe wants #4 back. It was not a hard shot from a dangerous distance and I don't think he as screened but here was probably 4 skaters between him and the puck but they all were kinda lined up vertically to him. I guess the rotation continues.

Really sad that the first rounders + TBP didn't score in the SO. I'd just some down at 110% speed and snap a wrister from 10 feet out. The goalie would not know what hit him. All this S curve garbage isn't even hockey.

OSU just beat UM, so they better play their A game next weekend. If they play great transitional D it's extremely hard to score on them.

The D has frustrated me all year. They look so lost out there at times. They don't take away time and space, they backup until they are on the tenders lap, they take the body less then most woman's teams, lackadaisical play and constantly turn the puck over in their own end. It's maddening to watch to say the least.

IDK, I think in their own zone they've been better, but in transition they end up just plain MIA.

I have to say I'm really loving the BNT+ subscription. It used to be auto renew and that drove me away, partly because most of the games were on the tube and I only needed it for a few games and I was paying for months and didn't know it. And I saw every women's home game in person, so less need for it. Now it only runs for a month, which I really appreciate and I can see all the home games of both teams, if not on FSW. Of course it doesn't hurt that my wife decided she wanted to see Hallmark movies on a 73" tv either, so she upgraded us. Luckily that size tv works just fine for hockey too.

I have always thought the BTN+ was a good deal. Even if you dont do the month to month, the annual sub to a single school isnt that bad either. My frustration really is with the BTN for hosing the fans on the broadcast side. I cant imagine one would get better wrestling ratings than hockey. That is what is frusting. Plus, let's be frank, the cost really isnt that much when all we do is consume other junk (we buy starbucks 5 times a month but complain about a btn+ subscription, or more likely go thru 30pks of Hamm's, and scoff at BTN+). obviously its difft if youre in state and have tix, or you can watch on BTN/FSN Regionals. for the folks like me that are out of state and moving around every few yrs, BTN+ single school sub is a good deal.

I agree the cost of BTN+ is not bad. I'm just not impressed with some of the broadcasts that we've gotten for hockey. They've ranged from Wisconsin's feed from the LaBahn (at the high end) to Ohio state's silent game at the beginning of the season

OSU's is embarrassingly bad for a B16 school with zillions on dollars in the coffers. One would expect that sort of "broadcast" from Kato or Bowling Green.

It's a great day for hockey. All I want to see is sound transitional defensive hockey.

Agree, the broadcasts that are carried by FS Regional partners on BTN+ are fine. The broadcasts that are not on FS can be brutal in terms of the angle or no associated radio/tv crew feed and its just silent. How that is made better, I don't know. When all the game broadcasts were on the FS regional feeds, you could get the sports package on cable and have at it, but it seems they are in no mans land now between the FS regional feeds, NBCSN, and BTN/BTN+. No one wants to own it. Which just leaves the fans frustrated. UW should just go all in on FS Regionals, but then you lose the prospect of nat'l audience with BTN. Tough call. Once Illinois pushes go on their hockey team, I think there will be some more clarity for broadcast on BTN.

As far as OSU, it's tough, the athletic dept really doesn't show much of any love to their hockey prgm. I feel bad for Rohlik sometimes. Bucky has to dominate this weekend. D transition better be on their game.

No way. The RSNs are dying a not so slow death. They have lost all of their carriers save for some cable carriers and Direct TV since Sinclair bought them. I actually am guessing that the relationship between BTN and the RSNs will end at the end of this season since Fox is what owns BTN and they no longer own the regional Fox Sports Networks (soon to be branded as Bally’s). I’m guessing once the MLB and NBA deals with the RSNs expire we will see major changes. Whether that is some sports going strictly to a la carte streaming subscriptions, or someone like NBC exploring a hybrid stream/broadcast arrangement, I don’t know. It all depends on economics. But the RSNs cannot survive losing the carriers they have. The pro teams won’t put up with the lack of audience they have. I’ll be surprised if we aren’t watching exclusive arena feeds on BTN+ with the respective radio calls for all teams by next year. (And hopefully we’ll only be concerned about that for away games, since we’ll all be back at the Kohl Center. He says hopefully.)
