Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

By looking at the Wild schedule, looks like FS Wisconsin will be carrying a fair amount of Wild Games, counted 18 in all so they are at least getting hockey, just not much badger hockey!!!, wonder if they are still doing every bucks game this winter, that would suck. I also noticed instead of doing the badger game on saturday they showed big 12 Football, KU vs UC.. i'm sure wisconsin people just ate it up....

You have any idea the cost of doing a live TV broadcast? FSN was already doing the B12 game, the marginal costs of showing the B12 game in WI was zero.

FSN has enough data on the profitability of UW hockey vs all the other programing options. It says everything that they would take the other programing options.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

I have to wonder about the Mark Johnson bandwagoners.

When...EVER, have you seen a person who coaches a women's team to success, then crossover coach a men's team and have that same success?

I'm intentionally leaving out Mark's prior stint with UW men, just because I think the above question doesn't have an answer??

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

I only saw Friday's game, so that's all I can comment on. I was optimistic about the skill and effort then.

I'll add this one thing - this was UW's first series, while CC already had one under their belt.

Anyone jumping ship already is foolish, IMO. Give this team a chance to gel.

I am about 95% sure if you tune in the Charter Extra Channel 87 this weekend you will see the Badgers and the Mavericks. On friday there will be a Pregame show starting at 7:00pm with the broadcast to follow. Then on Saturday the broadcast will start at 7:00pm again. I know the games will be on in Mankato area and should be on in all of Wisconsin. I will do some more checking and let you badger fans know. For more updates come the the College Hockey Weekend Fan Page on Facebook.

Also if you can't get the game on TV stop by the Facebook page, I will have highlights posted there after the games.

Just to keep things clear, I will write this again, FS Wisconsin IS NOT FS North. FS North is from Minnesota (which is all we used to get here in Wisconsin, until FS Wisconsin was unveiled). FS Wisconsin is Bucks, Brewers, and the "occasional" Badger hockey game....NEVER Minnesota programming.

Not sure about DirecTV, but on DISH Net, FS North is 436 ALWAYS. FS Wisconsin is 444, 446, or wherever they feel like putting it. FS Wisconsin is NOT on 24/7; just once in a while.

After standing around for the first 20 minutes, the effort level was pretty good in the final 2 periods on Saturday.

My concern is this having the feel of the last several years. They should have gotten at least one more point on the weekend. Already I feel like they are in a position to need to steal back a point after one home weekend series. I love their talent on the blueline, but they rely way too much on those guys hammering a pin point shot. The Friday night shot total was up, but too many were within 6 or 8 feet of the blueline. I just didn't see guys getting to the front of the crease as much as I'd like, even if it is simply to screen on those shots.

All valid concerns, but let's remember that this was the first series of the year. Give them some time to work on it.

Also, we hit the double-post not once, but twice.

I didn't see any glaring weaknesses. The D played well for the most part, but gave up some odd man rushes (and on one of those, Ramage took the shooter instead of the pass, giving CC an easy back-door goal). The offense generated lots of chances.

I thought UW was more physical and dominated possession for the most part.

Anyway, lots to build on.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Has anybody read anything about Derek Lee lately. Did I miss something?

I have been wondering the same thing too. This team definately needs another creator on the ice and less grinders and he fits the bill perfectly.

Random thoughts....

I think UW needs Davies (43 assists in his last non-UW year), Thurber (41 assists), Lee (47 assists) and Stepan (67 assists) each on a line. Then add in a grinder/physical guy (Grotting, Dolan, Bendickson, Murray, Johnson, Turnbull) and add in a guy who can shoot the puck (Geoffrion, Bohmber, Smith, Street, Mitchell). This would make each line a threat to score and create all sorts of match-up issues for opposing teams.

Saturday Lines:

I'm really sick of wasting a center spot on Dolan. He's not a creator, he's not a finisher, he's a checker. Whoever is on his line isn't going to score (Grotting or Mitchell/Murray). But he is the the poster child for Eaves who loves guys who play hard, play the system responsibily and can't score a lick. The pathetic thing is once Lee finally starts playing, Dolan will still be chugging along on the 3rd or 4th line and Turber and Davies will still sit.

Thurber got paired with Turnbull/Johnson and Bendickson. Thurber is a creator, but who is he going to get to finish for him or have the talent and ability to get into a position to finish?

Stepan centered Smith and Bohmer - LOVE THIS LINE. That assist Stepan had Friday was an absolute thing of beauty. And I'm a believer in Bohmber. Smith showed good flashes.

Street centered Murray and Johnson. 2 energy guys and a scorer. Who creates? Oh wait, they dump and chase, no need to create.

Bennett's helmet is UGLY. That 2nd goal Friday was soft. I liked the way he played the puck out of the net. It's a new dimension UW could really take advantage of.

McD's hit on the CC captain should be the WCHA the hit of the year when it's all over.

Shocked Davies didn't play Saturday.

OZ said UW came out flat Saturday. How the hell can that happen? They just lost the night before against a team picked 8th who has a freshman goalie who had not played in front of that many people in total life combined. Flat? I'da been freaking p/o'ed if I was on the UW roster, ready to kill Saturday. Kick some *** and take some names you freaking pansies. Flat? This from a team who wore T-shirts all summer that said .0002. This team knows better than any team how razor sharp the edge is to making the ncaa's. They know they cannot leave anything in the tank or it very well may kill them. Come on boys. You talk the talk, but you don't walk the walk. I want dead splattered purple landcows all over the rodentsota countryside. Show us you give a ****.

Nothing less than 4 points from Kato will calm my frayed nerves.

How the hell am I going to fall asleep this wound up?

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

One would think a meaningful question of "What's going on with Derek Lee?" would get asked during Eaves weekly press conference. Guess that's not very important.

Yeah it's getting to the point now that someone needs to be held accountable, I really don't think it's all on the NCAA being backtracked. I don't know who the blame falls on, the coaching staff, director of hockey operatiions, his academic advisor, or UW admissions? It's not like the Mark Jackson, Brian Elliott, or Bohmbach situation where they were enrolling just a few weeks before school started and had to get everything rushed. Lee graduated last year and had a whole year to make up something if he was missing a requirement. This is lookiing more and more like the Zabotel-Michigan Tech case. Zabotel eventually got fed up with it and went to the WHL. I think Lee stays, but I have a weird feeling he's going to be an academic non-qualifier and have to sit out first semester if this keeps up.

Then i must have been dreaming the 3 times i have seen wild games on FS wisconsin this season then. FS Wisconsin may not be doing the games but they have been showing Wild games by sing there feed and they will continue to do so all season long...

Thanks College Hockey Fans!

Kinda sad that Minn St. has a pre-game show and Wisconsin doesn't... and why is everyone coming to the defense of FS Wisconsin here. If FS wisconsin wanted to just do one game UW should have gotten them to do saturdays game sense the friday game was already being done by WPT. Not having a home game on TV either live or Tape delay is unacceptable. Another question why does WPT do a game FS Wisconsin is already doing when they could have just done saturday's instead. The thinking just does not make sense to me. Its just bad, bad for recruiting, bad for fans, bad for everything. If they don't want to pay to do road games fine, i get it but WPT is what, a whole 2 blocks from the KC, its kinda simple to me, you have FS wisconsin do what ever games they want, then have the rest on Tape Delay on WPT (Wis Channel). When your not getting every home game on TV you really don't need to waste money by putting a game on twice in one night?? somebody make it make sense if i'm wrong...

They generated chances, but it disappointed me to see them not bury those chances and I'm not sure how many I'd label as great scoring opportunities. The Bombach goal was a great play between him and Stepan, but the other two were terrible angle shots from inches above the goal line that deflected in off a Tiger. They can't rely on those kinds of fluky bounces. They need to get guys to the front of the crease much better than what I saw or create in transition much better. This needs to improve. Howe was shaky on Saturday and they could have put up a 5 spot on him pretty easily. They did hit 3 posts when they beat him clean, but that doesn't get them anything.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Why can't they just play Davies on the Power Play? If he truly is a specialist then just trot him out there for the PP and let him sit the rest of the night.

Really???? your not being serious are you? Its a terrible way to run a team #1 and What if you only get 1 Powerplay that game, then its a waste of a roster spot

http://host.madison.com/sports/college/hockey/article_73dc73b0-bd84-11de-b50a-001cc4c03286.html More info on what happened with Derek Lee, but no more info on when it will be resolved.

As of 3 PM today, nothing. Brain Posick had a report on today's "On Wisconsin", but there was nothing new to add. I can't imagine what the NCAA would be doing. One would think they would want to get this thing resolved ASAP for a student/athlete; but this isn't their baby otherwise known as basketball  . I just hope Lee keeps his patience and the NCAA gets off of their 7 hour per day coffee break and clears him to play.

Posick also interviewed Brett Bennett. (I agree Tim A, fugly helmet. I couldn't see it during the game, but saw it on the DVR). He was asked, but didn't elaborate on his dismissal from BU. He gave high praise to Parker & the BU program....that was it.

Me? I would have probably torn a 2nd butt-hole into Parker & BU.

I don't have any agenda, nor am I pining for any particular coach. It was really just a tongue in cheek type comment.

I agree we shouldn't give up on the season just yet. However, I have lost confidence in this teams ability to do anything offensively without the benefit of a turnover. Case in point:
- The vast majority of our shots come from the blue line. Why? Because we don't pass well enough to be able to create anything else.
- Our offense consists of dumping the puck in zone, and then chasing. Does any other team in college hockey dump the puck in more than we do?
- If we do manage to get control of the puck in the zone, all we ever try to do is throw three players behind the net and cycle. One point on Saturday, I counted 12 straight passes within 2 feet of the boards. Not once did ANYONE go to the net or put themselves into a position to shoot. Hell, our one goal CAME from the corner.
- While we cycle endlessly, everyone else stands and watches. The CC defenders guarding the UW players at the blue line were standing there watching.
- Our power play consists of one guy standing in front of the goalie while four other guys standing 30 feet away pass the puck to each other, not moving, until one finally tries a 35 foot shot.
- The five fastest guys on the ice all wore black. We are slow.

This looks like last year's team. We are so system dependent we lack basic offensive skills. Nobody creates, nobody passes, nobody can actually receive a pass, nobody charges the net, nobody can finish. I would love to watch a team that just has a little balance between offense and defense. Maybe the reason were not on TV is because nobody wants to watch us.
