Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

On another note, I realize it's 3-4 monts after the fact, but it still bothers me that the NCAA Division 1 Women's Hockey Final Four can't find a spot anywhere on TV. Especially, when I see all the non-sports (poker, pool, table tennis, skateboarding, etc) that have been on major sports channels since then.

Definitely not a Badger Booster, but on this topic - as womens' hockey fans - I think we can all agree. I know all to well that hockey is very much a niche sport, and college hockey is a niche within a niche, and womens college hockey is a niche within that niche. But even so, you would think that with the proliferation of cable sports channels that the Women's Hockey Final Four could be viewed on an actual TV.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

I am old enough to have existed and to have been interested in sports before cable TV existed. There is a huge chasm between what they promised us when they got us to agree to pay for what was previously free TV and what has actually been delivered. They promised us ala carte selection of programming that we wanted to see. What we got instead is "packages".

Cable TV as it exist today is a promise not delivered upon.

Dan is a great recruiter and a stand up guy. He will bring some cred back that was not there since he left.

I concur. Not impressed with her coaching skills which boil down to leadership. Mentoring freshman and life skills?

Glad that you concur with yourself. Not sure what the point is of taking shots at Tracey after the fact. If she was such a liability over the years, she could have been removed at any time.

Agree 100 percent. What the heck didn't UW win it all last year? I think she must have done a pretty darn good job. We'll see how they do this year without her and why slam someone at this point. Some people are never happy.

I completly agree as well. She stepped in when Mark was gone planning to share the duties with Koch who then left somewhat suddenly. That is a tough role to fill as interum HC with two new assistants and you best players playing in the Olympics. Beyond that year she seems to have played her role and she was part of 4 National Championships, hard to be critical in my opinion.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

Kind of not off season, but at which game will the banner get raised?

If memory serves (and I could totally be wrong), I think they have raised the banner before the 2nd game of the opening weekend. However, the last few years, that has been a Saturday night. Unfortunately this year, it's a split weekend and the Sunday game will essentially be going up against the Packer-Bear game. While I'll personally be at both games, I'd like to see the banner raised on Friday night as there should be more fans for that game.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

The banner is being raised Friday night. The girls got their rings this past weekend. They're giving out NC commemorative pucks at the game Friday. They'll be giving out vouchers at the door starting at 6 and then you can redeem the voucher before the third period - forcing people to stay for the game - which I appreciate. Also, both games this weekend are FREE! No excuse not to go.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

Credit the UW marketing department for making the season opener as appealing as possible. The championship pucks look really cool and can't go wrong with free admission. People should also note that the game got moved up to 7:00 from its original 7:30 start time. Kind of sucks they are going up against the UW volleyball team at the same time over at the Fieldhouse. Have to believe that negatively affects the potential attendence. I swear a majority of their fall semester games are at the same time as either the volleyball team, Badger football or the Packers.

I am super-pumped for the game tonight. LET'S GO RED!

Lindenwood winning would be more of a miracle than 1980. But kudos to Mark Johnson and Wisconsin's athletic department for giving the Lions the opportunity.

Nice opportunity -- they are down 8-0 after two. If Coach Johnson really wanted to give them opportunity, he should have sent out another half dozen player to participate on other teams like Canadian campers and soccer. I'd feel more sorry for Lindenwood, but I see they put up 30 goals on Northern Michigan in a January game. Welcome to D-I...

According to the ACHA website it was 31 goals, but it was over two games. In the second game they matched the 11-0 score that Wisconsin won by tonight. But I doubt that Johnson will let them score 20 in the Sunday rematch!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

I was going by their wiki.

FWIW, Wiki is right; the ACHA score is wrong. The score WAS 30-0, and Lindenwood poured it on in the 3rd, scoring 10 goals on 25 shots: http://www.lindenwoodlions.com/custompages/women_icehockey/2010_11/10luwi24.htm . However, the game was not an anomaly, as Northern Michigan was terrible at the club level, having managed to lose their first 6 games to other teams by a combined score of 103-2: http://achahockey.org/show_team_results.php?team_id=13177&league_id=1064&schedule_id=55361 .

Re: Wisconsin Badgers Off-Season '11

Actually, according to Lindenwood's own website, they did beat Northern Michigan 30-0 on January 29 and then beat them 11-0 the next day. Then, for good measure, beat them again 13-0 in February.

They played decent tonight (at least defensively) for a period, but the floodgates opened in the second. The Badgers pretty much swarmed the net all period except for a couple of minutes. Badgers played Kaasa in goal for the third and she was able to hold up the shutout. With six players gone due to other commitments and injury, they were able to play the remainder of the roster. Of the freshman, Josephs seemed the smoothest and most comfortable on the ice, though all four played fairly well. The other pleasant surprise is that Natalie Berg started, collected 3 assists and (according to collegehockeystats) was a +7 for the game.

Once again, the Badgers will be very deep and very good in goal. After this weekend, the schedule gets very tough over the next four series against No Dak, Minnesota, UMD and Boston University. Those games will go a long way to see if the 2011-2012 should be ranked #1 early in the season.
