Wisconsin Badgers 2020-2021

After nosing around RPI's thread, Helgeson has a 4.25 Neutral Zone rating. I hope that's on a 1-5 scale LOL. They seemed pretty happy to have her on the books, so I'm assuming so.

Come on, tell us how you really feel instead of these vague, heavily veiled innuendos. Wink.;)
Oh come on. The veil isn't that heavy.

As for how I feel, I don't think that any of your additions have really changed the balance of power all that much. Eden's case wasn't good for the sport, because the sport is healthier if she stays at Princeton where she'll make a difference. Wisconsin is going to be what it is either way, whether the talent level is a notch up or a notch down. Princeton, however, is still at a point where losing a blue-chip recruit for four years is going to leave a hole in the roster. There have been 22 years of UW hockey, and the Badgers have had a decent goalie for all but one of them, so I don't know how big of a difference even those transfers made in the big picture.

Are we just going to pretend that the Gophers didn't have a transfer in goal last season?

Were we speaking about the Gophers? Sorry, I missed that. Yes, they had a transfer in goal. She was very good early in the season, and wasn't able to make as much of a difference later, to the point that she didn't even start their only postseason game. Again, I didn't see transfers shifting the balance of power much for Minnesota either. I think that they could have missed the NCAA Tournament just as well with the goalies that returned from the previous year.

You were speaking about transfers and the "heavily veiled innuendos" concerning how "you really feel" about them.
Yes, I understand what I'm posting. Is there something that you would like me to address that I haven't? To recap, from my perspective: Timothy and I were joking about UW transfers; I said, in different words, that I didn't think the UW transfers had changed the landscape of where UW fits in the national picture; and I agreed that UM started a transfer in goal after its presumed starter suffered a career-ending injury. I don't think that transfer altered the national picture much, either. Is there something that you still want?

Are you in favor of college athletes being able to transfer schools, or not? If not, what problem do you have with it? Are there particular instances that run 'opposite' to your general opinion? That is, "generally OK with transfers, but not this one" or "generally not OK with transfers, but OK in this case", etc.

Right now, it seems like your position is "I'm OK with transfers, so long as they are not particularly impactful, but not so if they have a significant impact". And that would an absurd position; how is a school supposed to know apriori the level of impact?

No more "veiled innuendo", please.

College students have the right to transfer. We as fans can't make a decision for any young lady. Speaking for myself, I have a hard enough time running my own life and I don't wish to run anyone else's life. There is definitely something to be said for the student-athlete who runs into problems at a school and decides to stick it out and make things work, but I have no knowledge of why anyone decides to transfer in the first place. I've heard of all sorts of reasons in real-life situations: change of major field; family illness; homesick; etc.

Most of my comments are around the periphery of the transfers. I think we've discussed it being curious that UW didn't have a goalie all set to go, such that the transfer came in and took the job, seemingly without much of a battle. That doesn't mean I think it is the wrong decision for her, seeing an opportunity to play at Wisconsin and taking advantage of it. If Eden wants to go to Madison and compete for a title instead of waiting around for Princeton to resume competition, that is her business. I feel that I can comment on the impact on the sport while still saying that the student athlete has every right to attend any school to which she can gain admission. I went to school with many non-athletes who transferred to different schools, also for many different reasons. I planned to transfer when I first enrolled, but ultimately didn't. I don't see transferring as some evil.

As for a veil, that was Timothy's words, not mine. I never intended there to be one.

You started with "...until they get around to fleecing some other NCAA rosters" and now end with "I don't see transferring as some evil". That's the source of my questions.

It was in response to Timothy; he took it in the spirit it was intended. In the old days, we could send someone a note in the reputation comment, that functioned as a private message. If we still had that option, that is what I would have done here.

She made a huge difference for UW. Web and O'B were having slower than expected starts and UW was a 1 line team until she got there. She gave them legit scoring depth. And her arrival ended up getting Web and O'B in the same line as Schneider, which as we all saw just exploded at the end of the year and they were the reason UW was in a position of being in the final.

I really don't think Eden not going to Princeton set back women's hockey. Haha. Maybe when she wins the PK I'll eat those words (and gladly). The Ivy league totally shot themselves in the foot and screwed over all their athletes with the ultra covid paranoia. The other league's successes clearly showed that their shut down was overkill.

I was hoping the wink at the end of my sarcastic post should have avoided the little bruhaha that developed.

You’re spot on with that ^. Princeton (and probably all other ivies) assumed that enrolling/getting a degree from Princeton was the brass ring and no one would dare give that up...but when the player could be competing for a gold medal that changes things.

Helgeson is an above average skater so that helps with the fact that she is smaller in stature (5'4" 125)

Hey, and of interest to TimothyA is her shooting percentage is listed at 76.9. 10 goals on 13 shots on net...Even better than Hemp.

I'm not a big fan of tiny D. I am a fan a above average skaters.

LOL on the shooting percentage. I'm never looking at that again. Haha.

Should someone be starting a 2021-2022 thread? Not me! I'm new! And just barely made the forum cut when I answered the knowledge question "Patty Kazmaier" instead of "Hobey Baker." (Q: What is the name of the award for the best D1 hockey player in the country?)
