Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Funny - if that hit was against a UW player, all hell would break loose on this forum. Seeing it was the other way around, it's an issue between UND and the referees!

A penalty needed to get called, and the refs call them, so it's a ref/und issue. I'm not sure what your point is. It wasn't some goon blow to the head like DeFault's was. She was punished for it, so I'm ok with that, though at the time they matched them up with a phantom call against UW, which was a total joke.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

We had the band today! That was awesome.

That was a tough game. UND really owned the 2nd period. They kicked it up a notch. Luckily UW's big 4 (ARD, Clark, Nurse, Pankowski) all came through and pulled out a tough win. The sue played every bit as good as the rodents did against UW.

For some reason, during the post game handshakes, und's top assistant was having a major hissy fit. The coaches nearly did not shake hands due to him. He wanted none of it. Mark Johnson's reaction to him was similar to how he used do deal with Ms. Miller. There was a horrible non-call against UW when a sue player got nailed into the boards, but that would have been between the sue and the ref's, not the UW coaches.

From what I heard, it wasn't about anything specific that happened in the game - more just the last time the two coaches were going to speak and airing stuff that had built up and was boiling over the course of the weekend.

Congrats to Ms. Desbiens for taking home another Defensive Player of the Week. She was definitely the MVP over the weekend as the Badgers were fortunate to come out with 6 points. North Dakota played the best of any opponent I've seen this year.

Great crowds both days (legit sellouts) and just really well-played hockey for all 60 minutes of each game. Such stark contrast to the men's game I went to Saturday night. Badgers didn't show up and an average Gopher team just buried them from the get-go. There is definitely a reason why I'm much more invested in the women's program than the men's.

Series preview news/notes/video against St. Cloud. Can't take them for granted as they came in last year and took a game.

Should be a cool weekend with it being the 10 year recognition/reunion for the 2006 championship team. Didn't seem that long ago that I watched them win the title at Mariucci and then go over to Sally's for a post-game celebration and watch the men win in 3OT over Cornell. Arguably the best day of hockey I've experienced.

I can't go Sunday. :(

Still would love to know the health prognosis of Miller and Rolfes.......

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Funny thing is UW is 1 forward short next year, he needs to poach someone of the rodents.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

It's a Great Day For Hockey! Got a little positive vibe after the men's win last night.

I'm going to bring the book about the 2006 men's/women's season with me to the rink today, hoping to score some autographs.

I had not realized St. Cloud was the last team to beat UW @ home. They've scored as many goals this year as BSU, the 3rd place team in the league (What a shocking commentary on BSU I guess). They've scored less goals than the next 2 teams behind them in the standings, fascinating. UM just beat them 7-0 and 4-2, so it's barometer time again. PP is a respectable 18%, PK is bad as 73%.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Anyone have any insight as to why Johnson had the lines all juggled today? Was someone injured?
Game was a tad boring, SCSU just packed it in and hoped not to get scored on. They did somehow spring 2 clean breakaways that ARD stopped, a tad sloppy I'd say on D.

Everybody was there (not Rolfes, etc), everybody played. From time to time, normal line combos were used. But other times it was Clark/Pankowski/random-4th-liner, then maybe Wellhausen with Nurse/McKibbon, or normal 2nd line with Wellhausen somewhere else, etc etc. They were all over the place. I was wondering if maybe Wellhausen might have been sick or something, such that they wanted to save her a few 1st line shfits. But that is absolute rank speculation on my part. It was odd.

Edit: I don't think it was happenstance/accident that it was Clark/Pankowski getting the assists on Cogan's late goal. I think it was her turn on the ice in Wellhausen's spot.

It was interesting right out of the gate with Doner getting the start on the #1 line. But that didn't last long. Maybe they are just looking to shake it up a bit. As hard as she plays and as fast as she is, Wellhausen only has 4 goals and 4 assists. As a whole, team only has 5 non-empty net goals over last 3 games and a couple of those have been a little flukey.

Badgers played well enough to win, but St. Cloud legitimately kept it close and Desbiens had to make some big saves to preserve the win.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the band showed yet again and it was another sellout. Nice to see other games besides Minnesota, North Dakota and UMD sellout though I do feel bad for those families that are showing up only to be denied at the door. This is the problem of LaBahn being the size it is. In theory, they could probably be pulling crowds of 4,000 (if not more). They are locked in where they are with no room for growth. Kind of frustrating.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Seating...if they wanted to, they could take the upper press level and wrap it around the whole perimeter of the rink and have seating up there (where there are not hallways now).

I thought Wellhausen was injured or something, but then I saw her out later. Johnson played in the 3rd period at times with Panny and Clark. It's hard for me to watch the game and ponder the line combos at the same time, thanks for the info. I tweeted to Posick to ask MJ about it as the weekly presser. I think Robert and Booster are right, the O is a little dull right now and he was trying to fire it up.

I was watching Shaver yesterday, she has such a powerful stride. Clark is so freaky fast, just incredible.

One issue is that they do not shoot off the pass. The men scored 2 yesterday like that. They allow the goalie to reset when they stop it, then shoot on the backside. I just don't understand why they don't do that. Surely it is not a lack of talent.

ARD was awesome yesterday. That was a game they were destined to lose if she doesn't stop those breakaways.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Sunday's lines:

In the first period, the 1st line was 'the normal' Pankowski-Clark-Wellhausen, and the 4th line was normal. Jones and Shaver were swapped such that 2nd was Nurse-McKibbon-Jones and 3rd was Shaver-Sowchuck-Cogan

From the start of the second period on, Cogan went back to the 1st line like late yesterday, with Wellhausen taking her place on the 3rd. With Pankowski-Clark-Cogan getting one yesterday and two today, I'd expect that combo to last a while (and Shaver-Sowchuck-Wellhausen sounds like a pretty good 3rd to me.)

The way the Badgers dominated the 2nd and 3rd periods, I can see those new lines sticking around for awhile. Cogan was clicking on the first line, Jones seemed comfortable on the 2nd line and Shaver/Sowchuk/Wellhausen looks to be a nice combination of size, experience and speed. Top 3 lines were buzzing the nets after the 1st period and Johnson had a couple of good looks late.

Still gave up a couple of breakways which is a little concerning. It's nice having Desbiens back there to clean things up, but eventually some of those are going to get converted.

Overall, thought they looked much better than yesterday. Good size crowd considering a noon start and a lot of other events going on today (wrestling/women's basketball) on campus.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Moving Cogan up to the 1st line was fantastic. I expect them to stay together down the stretch.
Also, towards the end of most periods, Mark Johnson puts Nurse out with the top line regardless
of what shift they were on to maximize the offense. He rides the horses knowing they can recover
between periods.

Awesome, hopefully Cogan can be the cog that amps up the offense. It's a little sad the baby badger line from last year is dead.

I wonder what other tweaks can be made. I like McKibbon a lot, but she does not have the speed Nurse does. I wonder what Shaver/Nurse/Wellhuasen would look like?

How much experience does Nurse have at center? I think they'll go with those refigured lines for at least another game. Barring injuries, I don't see Clark/Pankowski or Nurse/McKibbon spilt up any time soon.

Congrats to Ms. Desbiens for WCHA Defensive Player of the Month. She gave up 3 goals in a loss to North Dakota in early December. Since then, she has given up a total of 4 goals (over the span of 9 games).

She is in lock-down mode right now. Hopefully that hot streak can continue. With that said, I would like to see fewer (or none) clean breakways against her and the offense to get a little more consistent.
