Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

I know last year there was a lot of media pressure in their faces about the streak.
Media pressure in women's hockey? Now there's something you don't hear every day.

Once upon a time, you used to have a player like Bauer, Lawler, or Duggan who would always do something at crunch time to swing a game in your favor. Lately, Minnesota has had those players. Eventually Wisconsin will have someone step into that role, and it won't matter what the five people in the media say.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

We're going to start to get delusions of grandeur!

This piece from Shattuck two days ago has Mauermann signing at UW.

The other name I have on my list of players who say they've committed is Brette Pettet, who's also at SSM. She's from Nova Scotia and would be a '17-18 commit. She recently played in the U-18 National Championships in Canada and this was the scouting report: "high hockey IQ … great release … knack for finding the back of the net … dangerous on the power play … leader on and off the ice … willing to play any role … team-first mentality"

Sounds like her dad might have been in charge of the scouting reports! ;) Seriously, sounds like a great pick up.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Wanted to add to the Team USA roster talk - I wouldn't put too much in who wasn't invited to this camp/tournament.

I spoke to Coach Klee on the Friday before they left for Sweden and he made it clear that he's just a year into his tenure and he's trying to see all the players and see who would work well together. The teams for the 2014 Four Nations and 2015 WWC were college-heavy, so this time he wanted to take the chance to see some other players. It was ideal to see someone like Jordan Smelker, who is in season with the NWHL and therefore he and his staff could get a good read on where she's at. He knows he may not be the coach come Pyeongchang, but he also made it clear that despite being years out, finding the right mix of players to win gold in 2018 is a priority.

My personal take - it was nice to hear from a coach. Clearly we all could make a 23-man roster right now of the top names in the game, but that's not something that's proved successful (winning the gold) for the US. My impression was that Klee is trying to find the team that can win, not necessarily a team of the best players (very Brooks-esque, no?)

As much as the discussion has hinged on who USA didn't invite, I'm just as interested in who Canada did. They've relied on their older, established, decorated talent (plus Poulin) for a couple of cycles now. Some of those ladies have retired and HC has to figure out what their team looks like moving forward. IMO, they've been trending much younger than in years' past. It'll be interesting to see where new meets old for them - for example, they've had Desbiens, Maschmeyer and Howe between the pipes for about a year, but they also have Szabadoes and Labonte.

Sorry this got long and off-topic for the Badger thread ...

There were articles in the newspaper and online interviews about the streak with the players, especially before the home series with them, enough to make it out of the ordinary coverage.

Thanks for the recruiting info! I'm a think ahead kind of guy, so recruiting is of great interest to me and of course it's hard to find info on recruiting for women's hockey. Maybe Badger Booster can update the spreadsheet?

You are not really off topic, I was wondering why Pankowski and ARD were not invited, especially after ARD played a large role in the summer for the Canadians, so the insight is appreciated. I'm hoping my dream of a Rigsby/ARD Olympic Gold medal game is still alive (though I won't be able to watch).

Maybe you can use your connections and find out why Rolfes did not play yesterday, that was a bit of a shock to the system.

Totally off topic, how did your recipe end up doing in the contest?

Reads alike a sold win yesterday, outshot the dawgs 37-17.

that's what she said
Katey Stone that is, and look at where that got them.

looks to me like there is something in there for us Gopher fans too

"...Kippin Keller added two goals and two assists to lead the Skippers..."

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

If you told me 12 games in that the second and third leading point scorer's were Burke and Ryan, I would have been a little nervous. Fortunately, it speaks to goal scoring balance and also Burke/Ryan are playing great right now.

I think Coach Johnson referenced it in the press conference, but it's probably not the worst thing that the shutout streak is over. It was cool and everything, but starts to take a life of its own. With Lindenwood coming in, it seems like a good time to give Desbiens a game off.

Crowd sizes will be interesting this weekend. Friday afternoon and Sunday overlapping the Vikings/Packers games. Not ideal.

I'm totally jealous of the crowd sizes that Wisconsin volleyball pulls on a regular basis. I would love to see a more consistent turnout from students and the band for women's hockey. I long for the day that it's standing room only/every seat packed at LaBahn no matter the day or opponent.

On Saturday the Gopher volleyball team drew 5,535 - a sellout - for their big win over No. 1 Penn State. That was more than double the attendance (2,148) that showed up to see our hockey team defeat No. 4/5 Bemidji State.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

The crowds here are still relatively solid at 1,700 (and have come a long way from the early days at the Coliseum), but it seems like women's hockey is still a hard sell even in traditional hockey markets with great teams. Badger volleyball has triple the crowd sizes and a very pedestrian women's basketball team draws just as many if not more than women's hockey. It's interesting if nothing else.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Volleyball and women's basketball have been around a lot longer. It takes time to build a following. Men's hockey didn't draw big crowds immediately either.

Not just Packers/Vikings, but Wisconsin volleyball against Ohio State at 1 PM (Ohio State being one of the three Big Ten teams that has beaten them this year; a fairly important match for upcoming NCAA tournament seedings.). Personally, I'm opting for volleyball and the full Packer game instead of Lindenwood and the second half of the Packers.

The tougher conflict/dilemma for me is Dec 4th: Hockey vs the Gophers at the exact same time as volleyball hosting either a first round or second round NCAA tourney match. I'll likely go for hockey, but it is NCAA tourney... (Gopher hockey/VB fans will have the same problem, as there's no doubt they will also be hosting NCAA VB matches on Dec 4th. They are having an awesome year, and will likely win the Big Ten championship in a surprise; very similar to what the Badger VB team did last year.)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

I didn't realize (though not shocked) the volleyball schedule. I swear their fall schedule every year runs up against a ton of overlapping spectator sports. Nice thing is that it clears up somewhat once it hits winter.

That's to be expected in November. The football, basketball(x2), hockey(x2), and volleyball seasons all take place through pretty much the entire month. (Additionally, soccer barely touches the beginning of November.) You have to go pretty far down the list of best attended sports to hit a spring sport at Wisconsin.

I'm planning at being at volleyball on Sunday afternoon.

To me, the NFL on TV is pretty close to the bottom of my sports-watching (or sports fan energy usage) totem pole, especially compared to Badgers home games. (And go Caps!)

Apparently the first goal ARD allowed was a tad soft, but Johnson said considering the length of the streak things tend to even out. No info on Rolfes's status.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

It is a bit of a relief that the shutout streak is over.. The next two weekends should not be taken lightly or overlooked with the Minnesota series on the horizon! I'm sure Coach Johnson will have the team ready and focused on the task at hand--Lindenwood.. I've said it before and I'll say it again.. I love the balance the Badgers have up front and the top 3 lines can all score. I have not heard anything either as to the health of Maddie Rolfes. I believe she did have some concussion problems in the past but, not sure if that is the case now! Losing her for any amount of time would not be good!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

I tweeted at AJ Harrison about Rolfes and got no reply. It's so annoying that in every other sport injury info is out there, but Mark Johnson never lets any info out. All I want to know is will she play this weekend, and if not, when is she projected back.

I will not be able to catch today's game in the flesh due to the stupid 2pm game time. I love buying tickets and just tossing them in the garbage. :( Anyway, that life as a UW women's hockey fan.

Unfortunately, from a fan's perspective, the program's attitude about injuries is deny everything and hope people stopping asking questions. On one hand I understand the right to privacy, but in every other major sport at UW all injuries are seemingly noted and reported on in a timely basis. At the very least, they are acknowledged.
