Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

You've talked to a couple band members who happen to be fans of the team. Like it or not, they are in the distinct minority.

I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer here but I think that's just how it is.

Wait...so if band members who are Badger hockey fans want to play at women's games, they don't count because they are Badger hockey fans? It's more than a couple, by the way, and they sure seemed pretty certain that they had enough people interested to play as a pep band a women's games, which is smaller than at men's games. They don't even need Michael Leckrone to be there, I've seen students stand in as directors at women's hockey games, and it works well.

Edit: As Badger Booster said, they don't need many. Not more than a distinct minority.

If they needed Leckrone there, the team would never get a band. The bigger question is whether he (or anyone within the UW Band) is actively preventing willing band members from attending games. If so, those people need to be called out on it.

Man, that's a lot of trombones. Never, ever trust a trombone player.

I really doubt that's the case. The only way they would is if a very small group of people wanted to play. If that was the case, the director would put his foot down and not allow it because a very small ensemble sounds terrible and makes the ensemble look bad (as much as the fans like you probably wouldn't care, that's a legitimate concern for the director).

Having said that, there's no way that if a full-sized ensemble wanted to play that he would turn them down. What's likely happening here is the director probably doesn't think he would get enough bodies and honestly probably doesn't want to put in the effort to ask because it's more work that he probably, frankly, just doesn't care to do.

Which is a problem, obviously. So your solutions are probably 1) find a way to have him at least attempt to put together an ensemble. If he does try, and hasn't gotten the commitment needed, well, there's your problem. 2) Find a student leader/section leader to take the initiative and try to get a big enough and diverse enough (instrumentation-wise) group together that is willing to play.

EDIT: I hope you guys find a solution, both as a fan and a former band member. I fought that battle for four years and just said screw it and brought my own trumpet.

Interesting night in the league. Badgers dominate shots on goal, but need two third period goals to seal the deal 3-0 in Mankato. Nice to see the freshmen put up more goals. I watched the first period online and noticed it was a really small crowd. Then I checked the box score and it shows an official attendance of 89. I realize Mankato is in the midst of a miserable year, but you'd think friends and family would at least push it past 100.

It's only a bit over an hour from the Twin CIties and there have been games where MN fans out number the MSU fans. I feel awful when we are louder than the home team but what are ya gonna do? The Mavericks are actually playing very hard and given their youth (11 or 12 frosh this year) could develop, there is talent there and they bust butt every game despite having that butt handed back to them - they deserve much better from the fans.

We would have made the drive out for the games if this was a Sat/Sunday series, and we're 6 hrs away.

Great to see Pankowski staying hot and a nice mix of others scoring, though it's a bummer I didn't see Nurse with any points. I see Pankowski as the one who can lead us back to the top. UW desperately needs a Knight/Duggan type of player.

Well, I think defense is why UW and UM are at the top. The one D who really stood out for me this weekend for UW was #5 Ryan. I hadn't noticed her before too much in the limited UW games I watched, but I thought she really played well. She is small, but she can skate. UW has a good, young D group. (UM has the best, but UW's is younger).

That actually depends on which six Badgers line up on the blue line. When Kim Drake plays, UW has a senior, two juniors, two sophomores, and a freshman. If it is Lauren Willimans in place of Drake, that makes it a senior, a junior, two sophomores and two freshmen. Minnesota's typical rotation is a senior, a junior, three sophomores, and a freshman, but because of Lee Stecklein's Olympic experience, you're right that it is a more veteran group.

Rats, you are right, their core is only slightly older. Embarrassment of riches for both clubs.....

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Another 100+ shots combined over the 2 games this past weekend.. 5 of the 8 goals were scored by the Freshman class. (Pankowski 2, Clark 2, Wellhausen 1) . Depth will be crucial once the playoffs begin and this team has it! Big test this weekend at home vs. Duluth!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Congrats to Emily Clark being named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Indeed, the freshmen have been a roll the last couple of weeks. Hopefully, that will continue this weekend in what should be a great match-up with UMD. Athletic department has done a decent job promoting this series. No reason it shouldn't be a near sellout both nights.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

I contacted Jason King as Badger Booster recommended (via email), and I got a phone call from him, which was I thought impressive. The 2 concerns I had emailed him on was the Friday aft games and the lack of a band. Here's what he told me. On the Friday aft games, they do everything they can to avoid them. This year it just didn't work out as well as last year when there were none. On the band side, the Athletic Dept. does not control when/where the band plays, the Music Dept. does. The AD sends them requests to play at all sorts of events, including women's hockey, and they pick and choose what event that want to play at. They are not choosing to play at women's hockey. I did not as Mr. King how often they request the band for the gal's games (I know that was dumb), but I will email him today and tell him to request the band for every game. Anyway, if we want the band at the gal's games, we need to email the Music Dept. and Leckrone himself to put pressure on them to show. FWIW, I did email him last summer and I never got a response. I will be emailing him again, and I beg all the UW posters to do the same. I will post his email address later today. Also feel free to contact Mr.King and discuss in more detail. He did a agree that the atmosphere at the games is way better with the band.

I finally got around to contacting Mr. King and it is clear that the leadership of UW Band has 100% control on whether a band is at women's hockey or not. He said they are more than welcome and requested to play the games (though I also forgot to ask how often they ask). My next e-mail is to Ms. Cook and Mr. Leckrone. Not exactly sure what kind of answer I'm going to get. I think the more they are contacted by fellow Badger fans, the better.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Just for reference, according to the Badger Band website, the UW Band will be at the Milwaukee Admirals game this Friday night. Frankly, it's a little insulting that they'll go to a non-Badger event when there is a Badger game on campus where they have probably been requested. How can that be justified?

It can't, unless they're professional musicians that get paid for non-Badger events?

I'm wondering how much the Admirals pay the UW Band for their trip and performance. That makes it a little different than the UW band showing up at a UW event.

(By the way, when their trip to Milwaukee doesn't conflict with Badgers home events, I do recommend going. I went with some friends last year and had a blast.)

FWIW, there was a big Broohaha at my local HS a few years back when the band didn't show up for the girls BB state tournament (and the team won), it turned out that the band director was in a fight for funding and since showing up would have taken money out of the budget to be there, he used it to make a point
perhaps this is what is happening or something similar

Possible, but Mr. King claimed the band hasn't given a reason for not being there. If there was a beef with the athletic department, you'd think an associate athletic director would know about it. Also, if the band really wanted to make some kind of point, they would boycott a men's basketball or hockey game.

That's what he told me too, it's all their (the Music Dept's) fault.......anyway you and I have made it known we want the band, I think other posters still need to contact Mr. King and keep the pressure on him, as well as contact the Music Dept. I think if Mr. King's boss got involved, maybe there would be a better outcome.

WISC DC.....any special signs in store for Ms. Miller this weekend? Maybe some whitty chants? It's our last chance to torment her you know.
