Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Could it be that bringing the band in would probably reduce the number of butts in seats? Its a shame though, have been there for games a couple last year and again this & it is the best crowd atmosphere at any women's game. They are a great team & deserve more respect.

The trade-off of 15-20 displaced fans would be well worth it. Just more of an incentive to buy tickets ahead of time or get to the game a little bit earlier. I don't see any down side of having the band there or any logical reason why they haven't been to one game this year.

Saw a lot of former players there today plus Nigel Hayes of the men's basketball team, which was kind of cool. Coach Eaves should have mandated that all of his players go today and see a Badger team that will play hard for all 60 minutes.

According to Guest Services, the Associate Athletic Director that oversees women's hockey is Jason King and gave me the number of (608) 263-5645 which looks to be a general number to the athletic department. On the main website, it looks like a more direct number is (608) 262-7974. I was told he was the person to contact if I had questions about the band (or lack of).

On that note, probably 10-12ish of the players on the men's team were at the Capitols-Stars game at LaBahn on Wednesday. There were a few other UW athletes I recognized at yesterday's game as well (and some regulars in the past, including Hayes).

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

It was good to see UW matchup well against a great team like Clarkson as I ponder UW's position in the world of the NCAA's. I was really surprised to see that many of their fans at the game, what a nice turnout by the visitors.

UW really needs Pankowski to stay hot. She had some really nice sniper shots Sunday. Ammerman has some very good looks from our vantage point but missed the net. The PP also created a lot of havoc in front of the net Sunday, which was good to see. Hopefully the upcoming Mankato series will allow more of the gals to get on the scoresheet and get that confidence rolling.

I will be contacting Mr. King about the band.

ARD had a couple huge saves this weekend. The one goal she allowed was a sweet backhand to backhand to blocker side from in pretty close.

I happened to watch periods two and three yesterday, and can she shoot the puck. Opponents best not let her get loose in the slot area.

Many have made the same suggestion to Mr. Lucia & the Gopher women.

The other thought I have on the band is do you know how many pep bands they have? MN has at least 3 and the women;s hockey game often gets #3 - which is still pretty good. Maybe there are not enough to go around?

UW probably has one of the biggest bands in the country. If Minnesota can figure out a way to get a band to their winter sport teams, so should Wisconsin. Again, I go back to the fact that there was a 25+ member band at a Wisconsin-Rutgers women's basketball game at the same time of the NFC Championship game. Yet no band for any women's hockey games this year so far. Somebody high up with either the athletic department and/or UW Band has made a conscious decision that the women's hockey team does not deserve the band. That p---es me off.

Sunday was probably the best I've seen the Badgers play all year, especially considering the competition. Pankowski looked like the All-American we fans all hoped she would be. Hopefully that offensive production will continue. I loved that the top line was out there at the end of the game still going 100%.

I was also surprised the number of fans that Clarkson brought. Not sure Minnesota, NoDak or UMD have brought many more fans. Fortunately, we didn't give them much to cheer about.

Yes, for a student body of 3000, Clarkson has a great fan base and travels very well. That being said, you did not give us much to cheer about. We will be a tough out, but we don't have the horses to run with this year.......but next year. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

I contacted Jason King as Badger Booster recommended (via email), and I got a phone call from him, which was I thought impressive. The 2 concerns I had emailed him on was the Friday aft games and the lack of a band. Here's what he told me. On the Friday aft games, they do everything they can to avoid them. This year it just didn't work out as well as last year when there were none. On the band side, the Athletic Dept. does not control when/where the band plays, the Music Dept. does. The AD sends them requests to play at all sorts of events, including women's hockey, and they pick and choose what event that want to play at. They are not choosing to play at women's hockey. I did not as Mr. King how often they request the band for the gal's games (I know that was dumb), but I will email him today and tell him to request the band for every game. Anyway, if we want the band at the gal's games, we need to email the Music Dept. and Leckrone himself to put pressure on them to show. FWIW, I did email him last summer and I never got a response. I will be emailing him again, and I beg all the UW posters to do the same. I will post his email address later today. Also feel free to contact Mr.King and discuss in more detail. He did a agree that the atmosphere at the games is way better with the band.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

As promised: leckrone@music.wisc.edu; Director of the School of Music- Susan Cook director@music.wisc.edu

From what Mr. King told me, we should be sieving Leckrone and Cook. It's all their fault! Sieve!

Good work, TA. After what I posted earlier, I didn't have/make time to contact Mr. King this week. Thank you for following up on this issue.

I've heard rumblings in the past that this is more a UW Band issue than athletic department issue. What surprises me is that the department doesn't have more leverage and/or control where they go. And even if they have no control on whether the band shows up to women's hockey or not, it reflects directly on athletic department whether they like it or not.

While I know Leckrone is a Wisconsin institution, he is no friend to the women's hockey program. The only time I have ever seen him at anything related to women's hockey was at the national title celebrations where he was able to get some face time in front of the cameras.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

I hate to say this, but it could have more to do with the band members than anything else.

In my days in the BC pep band they had a hard enough time fielding full ensembles for men's hoops, plus women's hoops, plus men's hockey.

BC is obviously not Wisconsin with regards to women's hockey support, but you could literally throw a hockey puck onto the ice from the door of the band room at Conte Forum. It's as convenient as it gets. Yet getting band members to commit to going to a women's basketball game was like pulling teeth.

They send the band to home Beanpot games and any NCAA tournament games but that's it -- otherwise the interest isn't there among the band members to field an ensemble.

That could very well be the case. My next question would then be (with all apologies to Badger women's basketball) why a 25+ member band wants to play for a mediocre women's basketball team instead of a national contending women's hockey team?

I've met and talked to band members at women's hockey games who said they (and others) want to play at regular season games. At the WCHA and NCAA tournament games, the band members are completely into it.

You've talked to a couple band members who happen to be fans of the team. Like it or not, they are in the distinct minority.

I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer here but I think that's just how it is.

You're asking the wrong person, I totally agree haha. But I'm sure there are some pretty B1G reasons for it.

That's the thing, when the band is there for the tournament games, they are totally engaged in the game. So who or what's stopping them from coming to the games? Can they go rogue and just show up, even if it's just 8-10 members? They don't need many to create a lot of noise at LaBahn.
