Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

An NCAA tournament bubble team?

Really?

I'm just being a realist, but I am saying this without knowing specifically who is coming back from other the other teams. It's just based on the fact that next year's team will weaker than last year's.

IMO, Wisconsin has been a top-three team the last two years and I think the Badgers will be again in March.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

It will be fascinating to see Vetter and Knight strap it up against the men tonight. I hope they play a little tighter game this year, apparently there is some sort of wager riding on the game results that might motivate people to play a little harder. There are still tickets available, but not many.

Eh? What's this?

There's a charity hockey game tonight @ the LaBahn area, the Blake Geoffrion Hockey Classic, benefiting the UW Burn Center. It's an UW alumni game and this year Vetter and Knight are playing. Joe Pavelski and Derrick Stepan are the captains. Brian Elliott is Pav's goalie and Vetter is D Step's. Tickets are still available, catch a flight out and watch. I'll even out you up for the night so you can fly back Saturday. You just can't wear anything BC related in the house.

It's going to feel weird wearing a Ranger's jersey into LaBahn and not a UW one.

Man... There is a BC/BU charity men's game at Walter Brown in July, I really wish Stack and Poulin were involved. I already suggested it. Lol

It was fun.

Nobody played much of any D; Elliott did a better job of stopping the three-on-none breaks than Vetter did, so the 'White' team was leading.... until the 'Red' team scored four goals on one rush up the ice (each player had their own puck, and got four our of five past Elliott); Elliott scored on Vetter on a "breakaway"; Vetter likewise on Elliott; Hillary Knight and Adam Burish got into "a fight", and Knight knocked him out; JJ Watt (huh?) scored on a penalty shot against Elliott; final was 11-to-11.

The coolest thing was that Vetter and Knight got by far the loudest ovations during the intros. Vetter looked tiny out there.

Just a friendly reminder to email Mr. Lecroe and ask him to send the band to more UW hockey games.....leckrone@music.wisc.edu

Done, but as a Gopher fan I don't know if it was wise to write him :)
The atmosphere at LaBahn is great, the fans deserve a loud & boisterous band so here's hoping they show up regularly.

That was very nice. :) It's way more difficult to dislike rodent women's fans than rodent men's fans. There's some real winners on the men's side. Maybe I'm just getting softer as I get older. Things get a lot more grey than black and white.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

I (and BC athletics) have been fighting this battle with BC for a while now. It culminated with the band being uninvited to Minneapolis when they were previously invited. It's why BC's band consisted of local high school students at the Frozen Four.

Not sending a band to the FF is pathetic, but hiring a HS band to play the role is even more pathetic. At least Hawvawd in 2014 had the decensy to hire a college band to pretend to be them.

With the exception of the Star Spangled Banner, I thought the HS band playing for BC did a better job than the college band playing for Harvard in the semifinal. And the HS band was back for the title game, playing for Harvard.

The gist of this story is, the BC band was asked to play at women's games a few times -- once in the beginning of the year, once before the Beanpot, and once before the NCAA quarterfinal. The band declined each time saying that the band members were overwhelmed with the number of commitments and that they agreed to only do men's hockey, men's hoops, and women's hoops, and that was it with no exceptions.

However, the band *had* agreed to go to the Frozen Four in Minneapolis from the beginning of the season, if BC did make it, which they obviously did. After the band declined to play throughout the season, athletics essentially uninvited the band from their free vacation to Minneapolis for not supporting the team.

Mens fans in general just seem more willing to let their freak flags fly. I have seen enough bad behavior to know I would not always be comfortable going to away men's games. On the women's side I have only seen bad behavior twice, both times it was visitors to Ridder doing the displaying, and everyone can have a bad day or a couple of poor sport fans tagging along.

I mentioned this last season, in some ways I found LaBahn to be a much better crowd than Ridder because they seemed more into the game of hockey than Ridder folks are sometimes - but maybe the opponent helped create that buzz :) Ridder is a lot more fun When the skunks show up.
