Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

I don't think anyone said she wasn't 100% cleared on concussion symptoms for the Frozen Four (she also played against BC). I think there is a difference between being cleared 100% (whatever the injury) and being able to play effectively at "100%".

The article and her own comments make it sound as though it's more about lingering symptoms though.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

From what I understand of the way concussions are handled these days, the player isn't allowed on the ice after suffering a concussion unless they can pass their baseline test. But that doesn't seem to be a 100% deal, in that the symptoms can return without suffering another injury, and improving to the point where the athlete can pass a baseline is no guarantee that she'll still be able to pass it at a later date.

Wow. I hope she recovers quickly and good for her to take her time to be ready. Quite a detailed article. I don't want to speculate on the FF since these symptoms can reappear and/or she had another physical event, but in many cases, if the athlete is healed and cleared for play, they should be able to move forward with workouts, conditioning, and handle all of the normal / high stresses. It's one thing to not be 100% effective due to conditioning or timing, it's another thing if it's because she was not 100% "back". Only those that have fought through concussions can probably explain what "back" means but she still does not feel right at this time two weeks removed from the tourney. Maybe another data point for coaches and trainers to assess the best practices for "return to play". They have come along way with he IMPACT testing and other assessments but there is still more to learn. Players continue to get faster, stronger, and more physical. Best of wishes to her.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Having suffered through at least 3 concussions myself (explains a lot ;) ), I know how difficult it can be to know when you're ready to go. And, it takes much, much longer than you think! If you've ever had a severe migraine you know that you may be "out" from the severe ache in your head for only few hours (or longer). You also know that you don't really feel like yourself for a few to several days . . . even though you fully participate in your life. Concussions are very much like that . . . the severe symptoms are fairly temporary but the lingering effects can be much longer lasting.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here but . . . .

I just want to encourage all players and parents to error on the side of extreme caution with any head injury (remember your brain is just sloshing around in your skull!!!)

The new roster is now posted on the UW website. With the men's hockey schedule set, hopefully the women's schedule will be coming out much sooner than normal (usually mid-late summer). It may be overly optimistic, but I'm hoping that LaBahn Arena means the end of 2:00 Friday games.

Yes, but instead it will mean games scheduled at the same time as men's hockey or men's or women's basketball. Guess which sport is lower in priority to attend...

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

I'm not sure that would be the worst thing in the world. There's not a ton of cross-over in those fanbases so it's not like people are going to be torn on which to attend. I think it would be pretty cool to have like a Hockey Night on campus with both teams playing even if it's at the same time. The only downside is not having free convenient parking I'm used to for the women's hockey games.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

What is the parking situation now? I have not been on campus since construction started. Will all parking be in the Kohl center lots? THx

An end to the Friday / Sunday series would be nice for fans and visiting teams...save a little money without the need to stick around that extra / idle day.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

In the past, the lots around the Kohl were free and first-come, first serve. For the normal size women's crowd (1,000-2,000) those lots were adequate. For the larger events, I assume people had to use area ramps for a cost.

I also hope that the new arena spells the death of the Friday/Sunday series.

Lastly, it's very frustrating that on primetime ESPN last night they had the National Spelling Bee and the NBC Sports Network was showing club rugby. Yet the NCAA D-1 Women's Hockey Frozen Four is relegated to the internet. What a joke!

That wont happen if they schedule games the same weekend as a football 2:30pm kickoff or weekends where both men's hockey and bouncy ball are home. It just pulls the staffing too thin and occasionally logistically its impossible to operate the events simultaneously as well.

In speaking with several individuals in the scheduling mix there still may be a few 2pm or earlier Friday games (kids day, etc) however 4:07pm looks to be what they are shooting for when there are events in the Kohl Center prohibiting a 7:07pm faceoff.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

A face-off time of 4:07 would still be a lot better than 2:00. Maybe it's too optimistic, but maybe some men's fans will go to the women's game (even if just for the 3rd period) prior to going to the men's game. I will also be more tempted to stick around after the women's game to see if I can get some tickets to the men's game and make it hockey night.

Yeah, but don't the doors normally open for a men's game at 6? The women might not even be done yet. I would think you'd need what, maybe an hour between the end of the women's game and the doors opening for the men, just to make sure you'd actually emptied the building. Or, as is entirely possible, am I missing something?

Labahn Arena and the Kohl Center are able to be isolated from each other fan wise so with a women's game concluding in Labahn around 6ish its no bother to any of the doors or ice level areas used by the Kohl center men's game. Staffing could be a little interesting but nothing to difficult with the limited manpower it takes to operate a women's game.

That's cool.

Well when you have your own barn it isn't an issue.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Can someone fill me in on the new freshman coming in this season? What kind of talent has Mark Johnson and company brought in to fill the cupboards?

Big shoes to fill, but I'm excited about the Women's team. Have to find a new favorite player now that Hilary Knight has moved on to dominating somewhere else.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Anyone know when the schedule will be released? Men's schedule has been out almost two months.

Also, haven't seen any new photos within the last few weeks of the progress at LaBahn. Hopefully, UW will post something soon.
