Wisconsin Badger 2025 Offseason

I also will shed no tears for BC losing. I really like seeing the 'all star' teams go down. We're not catching Denver anytime soon, so I'm glad that BC will remain behind us.
When I watched DU and BC and BU Western Michigan play I realize that the Badgers and most of the Big 10 teams are a level below talent wide. All the best go to a selet few teams and we dont complete. I dont see parady there and the gap is increasing. I sadly observe the Badger Men are a long way from competing for a title. Without top talent Hastings can only do so much. 15 years since the FF. Stand discouraged. Our Women get the top of the top and have the best coach in the business. Why can't the men?

I don't know about that. Penn State made frozen four and Badgers beat them twice in four games. Beat U-Conn in Milwaukee. Were competitive against Denver in the first game and played well against OSU in the playoffs. This in a really down year for Hastings.

In the playoffs - OSU was handling BU until the wheels fell off in the third period of that game and Minnesota and Michigan State games were toss ups. BU and maybe Denver are hot rod teams that made the frozen four (some of the other hot rod teams like BC, MSU, and Minnesota are home). I'll be pulling for Western Michigan. I also admire what Denver has done under David Carle (amazing coach and program).

Nailed Mehlenbacher leaving. He was the first guy that came to mind in terms of guys who don’t seem to fit the team.

The starter should be Hauser. Now just need a solid backup for competition.
Morrissey, Fitzgerald, Lindmark, Dyck and Mehlenbacher played center this year. Lindmark graduated and Fitzgerald was playing out of position. I am surprised about Mehlenbacher just due to that (and he was 54% on faceoffs). He did sit some games too and maybe that is one of the reasons he is leaving. You are now left with two true centers. I don't know the incoming recruits if they play center or not.

Scholl played more 4th line center than Mehlenbacher this year, he'll be back. There's also a few recruits who play center as well.

I had Dyck and Scholl mixed up. Looked up the stats too quickly. I guess they would then need 2 centers to allow Fitzgerald to move back to wing which was stated by Hastings in interview that he would like to do.

Hasn’t Fitzgerald been at center his entire time at Wisconsin?

Knott is quoted saying that Deering and Zelenov play center or have played center. He specifically called Zelenov a “very smart 200-foot true centerman…”

Tulk has a 65.6% faceoff percentage in the WHL (555 faceoff wins in 846 faceoff attempts).

I think so out of necessity. He was on the wing a few games here and there but mostly has been at center. I am sure they have a plan and will get the correct recruits / transfers. Milewski article here states he expects more attrition: https://x.com/MadisonSport/status/1906751351842881799

"The Badgers are prepared to bring in five or six freshmen forwards next season and had only three confirmed to depart due to eligibility. That made for a high likelihood of some leaving through the transfer portal."

The only f's that I don't want to see leave are Finley, Morrissey (top scorers) Laskosky and Horbach (best +/- F's, along with Morrissey).

Wisconsin interested in Brown goalie Lawton Zacher https://x.com/MarkDivver/status/1907084693784146061
2.48 / .917 this season, 2 years of eligibility left.

I think they want Hauser to be the starter but I wouldn't be surprised if they brought in a transfer goalie to be a backup or maybe split time if Hauser struggles.

The goalie from Bentley is in the portal as well - had a sub 1.96 GAA and a .925 save %. He played really well in their opening round game against BC (43 shots - 41 saves) but would only have one more year of eligibility.

Leaving we have: Lindmark, Laskosky, Mosley, and Mehlenbacher.
Coming in we have: Montgomery, Brink, Zelenov, Tulk, Deering and Idzan(?)

That means 2 more FWs probably have to transfer out. That’s before we even take in transfers. My guess is Buss, Pietila and Botterill would be most likely

On D we lose Laatsch and Kehrer
Coming in we have Osborn and maybe Stout?

I would love to see a big defensive defensemen come in. We definitely missed Laatsch once he went down. There are some nice defensemen in the portal.

The only players I really don’t want to lose are Finley, Morrisey and Hensler

They could go 16, 7, 3 with Horbach the 8th D as needed. But your point about getting bigger/ tougher doesn't work in that scenario.

The portal is going to be as big as last year. I saw Mike McMahon talking about purging players for CHL players: https://x.com/MikeMcMahonCHN/status/1907094878552457680 and the need to cut to 26 (which is where the Badgers will need to be).

Hensler showed some upside on O as the season wore on but was -13, not ideal for a D who plays a lot. The only D who was any good +/- was Kerher, +13; outstanding. Dexheimer was -16 LOL. I see the wisdom in getting a rock solid defensive D. Plus Dex and Hensler need to play better. They are better than those horrible -'s. The last thing we need to to toast Hauser.

Upon further review, I really don't want any transfer F. Someone else said it, lets build from the ground up, mold these guys to have the right habits from a clean slate. I really like this Fr class of F. They should be sprinkled through the top 3 lines (net sure about Deering) and get as much ice time as possible.

I'd be very satisfied with a .520 winning percentage next season and sound defensive play through the N zone in our D zone. You need to start somewhere and build it up. This will also help Hauser develop.

On the note of freshman incoming freshman, this article from the team website groups Idzan with the other incoming freshman. Think its a pretty safe assumption at this point that he'll be here next year.

That means 2 forwards will have to leave, if Horbach stays on the wing and they grab a D from the portal or CHL. I personally think that's a better route than having Horbach as the 8th D man, we saw this year how quickly defensive depth can get thin.
