Wisconsin Badger 2025 Offseason

What are other schools spending for hockey? I can't imagine a world where many universities are spending more than UW.
I agree and don't think other schools are currently spending tons on hockey/ more than UW. Also think this is a good time to mention that even in a down year, the KC averaged over 10,000 fans per game (per USCHO attendance stats), second highest in the nation. I know that's not the only source of funds for hockey, but should still be a lot of funds going back into the hockey program, and that revenue should in theory give us a little boost that other smaller schools may not receive. Anyone who knows more about the funding process, however, please let me know if this is accurate or not.

KC ticket sales, regardless of the sport, feed the athletic dept...which spends that money on operating costs and however it sees fit. The sport that generates those ticket sales matters not.

The larger issue I have is that AD may be running a Dept model that he inherited just a few years ago and is already out of date, threatening to leave UW in the dust bin. Hockey is an interesting beast though. The best players already know their destiny after their Freshman yr, some before, in the NHL. NIL doesnt mean much to them, development does.

However rare, the impact of Major Jrs now eligible may actually be good for college hockey, as it will potentially flood the NCAA with talent from the top down, as opposed to mid to low teams scraping for 2 decent lines.

And fire their coach. Seems a bit crazy.
I saw an article from their beat writer Schlossman a couple weeks ago about the state of the program. It's very similar to UW Football and firing of Chryst. It can go either way and is a huge gamble.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m ready for long term solutions to be added to the team and the transfer portal used more as a “break in case of emergency” option. Really lean into building a culture here.
Agree with this. I didnt personally like Hastings bringing in another one and done goalie. I believe that was Granato's trick that never worked. Goalie might have good stats but the team can't do sh*t. It's a big F you to the younger goalie and i think it has to hurt the culture and "Team" aspect.

I only watched about 10 minutes of mens hockey this year so not sure what the team looked like. Sounds like some of the same stuff as the end of 2023-24 after scrolling here. Breakdowns in the d-zone, not enough playmakers and inconsistent play? I didnt renew season tickets this year after Lucious and some other good guys left. Didnt have it in me to watch a team with limited offensive talent dump and chase and inevitably disappoint. The badger band going downhill also played a factor.

I read there's a supposedly talented Euro player Hastings got to sign with the Badgers. Thats a good sign. I hope there's at least one more very talented recruit to play with him.

I think Hastings was a no-brainer choice when we got him as coach and chances are good that he will figure it out and it is only his second year. I have to think Hastings and crew have learned how to and improved on recruiting to Wisconsin.

Went to a few women's games this year and holy shitster they've got players with vision and speed and skill. That is a fun team to watch. "Who wants it" is legendary. If the badger band can get it together Labahn would be super crazy.

Agreed. Especially at goalie where there are only 3 typically, and they sometimes seem to be mentally fragile;)

The breakdowns were one thing, but from that last interview with Knott on the radio, he was clear that they had some chemistry issues the second half of the first season and said that was gone this year. He also knew their recruiting had to change from MSU to UW. I was optimistic after hearing that from him. They definitely never quit and played hard even with the mistakes.

Women's only the best hockey team on campus men's or womens ever. Loaded with talent, coaching everything.
Walk into the KC, totally different men's hockey world. No one can blame the campus or the facilities. There has been an unexplained darkness over the program since after 2010. I cannot figure why talent excapes all the time. Top 6 or more reload every year. Denver, BU, BC, Minny, Michigan and now MSU who was bad less than a decade ago . Did not include NoDak based on recent troubles. Look at ASU. Brand new program with a new building. They have more talent too. There are more teams than that. Tony's first year had talent as did Hastings's. They have not been able to keep it. Hoping for better. I trust Hastings. He is a good coach with excellent career results.

I don't really have anything against MSU in hockey... nice to see someone besides Michigan or Minnesota at the top since we aren't.

That said, nice to see the teams that some of our talent jumped to after last season fall on their faces.

Oh yeah and Minnesota will once again fail to secure their 6th title.

6 (remains) > 5

:D

Another thought... the teams that comprise the B1G Hockey Conference have combined for zero titles since 2007 when MSU won it.

Yeesh

OSU outshot BU 15-3 in the first period and were dominant. Second period was more BU but ended at 3-3. OSU scored after time expired like .1 second too late and then the wheels fell off in the third. Goofers had control and led 3-1 after 2. Went into defensive mode and let Umass back in it. There were some questionable no calls including on the OT goal, but you shouldn't be in that situation when you were dominating. All in all I thought the Big7 was tough, but apparently it was soft.

They are crying on GPL. I almost feel bad. OK not.

They played to not lose in the third. That cost them.
I ALMOST feel bad for them....the no call on the trip that immediately transitioned into the OT GWG, not giving the goalie a chance to work out the equipment issue (to have the cold backup scored on on the only shot he sees), and the mugging/cross check behind the net that immediately moved to the front of the net for a goal against were all pretty bad and I would definately be irrate if the Badgers were on the other end of that. Couldn;t happen to a nicer nunch though.

Yeah I want nothing nice for them but that was a brutal non-call especially considering what immediately followed.

Have always hated the "Refs don't want to affect the game in OT."

You are DIRECTLY affecting the game by not calling obvious penalties.

Have them call it straight up and give the coaches one replay review per 20 min OT to overturn egregiously bad PENALTY calls.

In that case, call the penalty and UMASS could decide whether to challenge or not.
