Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season
You are only talking about the Coaches because your girl Sanders is one of the captains!
Get over the fact that she is not perfect, and has been far from a leader, then I will be happy to discuss the team with you.
Well I don't know who Snickers is, but I don't know any of the girls, other than watching them from the stands throughout the season, but I have to agree w/ most of their points.
As the early part of the season progressed, and the team struggled, I gave Tracey & the team the benefit of the doubt, she had a lot to overcome:
1) Mark Johnson Olympic hiatus
2) losing the best senior class in NCAA hockey
3)...specifically Jessie Vetter the greatest female goalie in NCAA history
4) Knight & Duggan wear Red, White & Blue instead of just the first two
5) losing the other long time assistant and going w/ two newbies (to the team specifically) is not easy
As the season progressed my benefit of the doubt turned into out right concern as a fan.
As Snickers pointed out, there is a lot of individualism at times. I could probably count 6 to 10 times a game where individuals drive the net in less than stellar situations getting off a less than stellar shot, while a teammate sits in a better position, but no pass is even considered. Theoretically passing in these situations might not have led to anything and the result wouldn't have been different, but watching a Mark Johnson coached team last season that never forced it on an individual play that wasn't a good chance, to this was not a good sign. He would never have allowed that to continue, teams win at team sports, not individuals.
I don't know about changing the lines, never really pay much attention to that, but I will say that Tracey way under used the 4th line especially Maria Evans and Lauren Unser, and later in the season Derya Kelter. Can you honestly tell me that Ohio State and Mankato's 3rd or 4th line is so much better than that trio that they couldn't have gotten 2 or 3 shifts a period to keep the 1st two lines of girls a little more rested? Ammerman, Decker, Giles, etc are sucking wind by the end of the games that extra few minutes could only have helped keep those legs a little more fresh. Plus Unser and Evans always give their very best effort when they get a shift. Sure not world class talents, but when you have the last change at home, and you don't utilize your entire bench to your advantage, which obviously had consequences later in the game in conditioning, just doesn't make sense to me.
Lastly is goaltending. No one is Jessie Vetter, maybe Alex Rigsby will be, but we'll see next season. I thought it was wise to rotate to start the season, but it was painfully obvious to me that McCready was the more consistent goalie. Ruegseggar may actually better talentwise (probably is), but for the shutout she might pitch, she also has big rebound problems and got lit up plenty of times. As the WCHA title started to evaporate, why not go w/ the goalie that is going to give the team the best chance to win, and that goalie is McCready. On top of that, unless McCready is some kinda rogue miscreant not giving any level of effort in practice, the fact that as a senior she didn't get to play in the Camp Randall game is absurb. Up 6-1 and she doesn't get some ice time? 3 years of sitting behind Vetter, 4 years of service to the program and not a sniff of ice time at the biggest event outside of the NCAA tourneys in her career.
And who else would be the leaders? I haven't seen ANY of the non-captains show much on the ice to say "here I am, I want to lead you to victory." Maybe Deluce, but others are far too concerned at times w/ being an individual, and that doesn't make a good captain.
This team may not be talented enough to the have won the WCHA, but they underachieved to the max this season. How can they go into the last weekend of the regular season and be in a place where they might not even get home ice for the WCHA playoffs? They should have been a lock for the NCAA tourney too, but are sitting in 8th in the PWR. Some, or a lot, of blame has to fall on the coaching staff.
I'm not calling them out, I really enjoy the Women's team, I'm just saying as fans we have a right to an opinion, and when we open our eyes and see a team playing a certain way and discuss it w/ friends (as I have countless times) that they could easily be playing better, we should speak our mind. Everyone is an armchair coach, but some of this stuff is obvious.
I'm not sure what else Snickers said, but your condesending tone toward them is completely unwarranted. Unless you don't believe in freedom of speech, and in that case, I'll pay for your plane ticket to Cuba. I respect your opinion and appreciate your keen insights on here, but you should do the same for others.
Feel free to tell me where I'm wrong and let's discuss the season.
