Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

Yeah, I know the big prize is, and always be, the NCAA title. I just hate conceding anything to the Gophers. I also know that North Dakota is the next team to really step up and be a contender starting next year. It was inevitable. You get spoiled by dominating a team for so long.

Badgers fined for ineligibility

"MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin paid a $5,000 fine to the NCAA for allowing a women's hockey player to compete even though she was academically ineligible.

The university discovered the player was ineligible for the fall 2007 semester during an audit last year and reported the infraction to the NCAA. The university did not release the name of the athlete, who played in 20 games that semester.

The school's College of Engineering said the athlete had earned 52 hours and satisfied an NCAA requirement of completing 40 percent of her degree. She had actually completed 51 hours.

The university blamed "an administrative human error" for the mistake."

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

This has been out locally for a couple weeks.

An admin error by the college of Engineering didnt seem to garner a discussion since its not like the team was aware of it..

I believe in the full state journal article it was noted that the employee is no longer working at UW due to similar mistakes.

Leave it to an engineering department to make a mathematical mistake...:p

math. it has no place here.

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

Nice win today, but....
The last several games the Badgers haven't suited up a full squad- today, they only had five defenders, according to collegehockeystats. Gina Prough has moved onto the offense officially. Is Olivia Jakiel still injured? She seems to have dropped off the face of the earth, like Malee Windmezxier. Carla Pentmione was blogging last weekend during the game- is she out for the semester?

Special teams is still having problems- No power play goals, gave up two PP's, plus a shorthander. What on earth?

They have not suited up a full squad since the first game of the year.

Jakiel is still out, no timetable for a return was set as of this week...

Prough seems to play better at forward than defense right now so let her stay up front as long as its working well.

I am not sure why Carla does not get playing time, especially when the badgers are already short. She is a 4.0 student so I know its not academic. I can see her not getting to dress when they have a full compliment of players, but I don't see the harm in letting her dress and getting a few shifts with the fourth line. Everytime I have seen her at practice she is giving it 110% and is also one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

There was talk of adding a sophomore hockey east defense transfer in at the semester, but I see that never materialized.

I went to the St. Cloud game today, who told them it was okay to steal the Blackhawks jerseys?

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

Solid weekend for Carolyne Prevost.

3 goals, 1 assist and 10 of the teams 73 shots on the weekend.

One of her best performances to date.

She is really becoming a threat each time she has the puck which is good taking some pressure off Decker and allowing her to get some cleaner looks as well.

Now if the Giles-Deluce-Ammerman line can find a way to gel consistently we might start to see more success offensively. The Offense overall need to find a way to keep control of the game once

And, as I said in the scores thread yesterday, given yesterdays result I am worried and less than optimistic going into the stretch run. Another loss to a sub .500 team damages the teams NCAA hopes and knocks them out of the top ten.

The Defense and Goaltending as well as the 3rd line really have me worried.
Becca has to learn to not beat herself. The Defense also needs to find a way to be effective in their own end and also break up the neutral zone transitions WITHOUT taking penalties.

Very Disappointing weekend IMHO.

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

I think Prevost has a great future. She showed signs early in the Frosh year, now she's solid. The trick to Deluce is, as you say, a good line to put her on.

I think the surprise this year is that Seniors are having an off year. Giles is down in scoring, as is Nash. Krantz has looked a bit lost this year. Could it be coaching styles affecting the expierienced? Not that we haven't seen this before (Hunter's dive in scoring being a potential example)

The Wisconsin women’s hockey team continues league play this weekend with two road games. The Badgers head to Ohio State for the two-game series before returning home to host Bemidji State for the much anticipated Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Classic on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Before the Badgers head outdoors, UW looks to pick up some much needed league points sitting in a tie for third place with the Bemidji State Beavers. The Buckeyes sit three points behind the Badgers in fifth place. Game two of the series on Jan. 30 is the USCHO Game of the Week.
About the Series

The Badgers split with the Buckeyes earlier this season. Wisconsin dropped the opener after scoring three goals in the third period to tie the game, but fell short after OSU notched the 4-3 decision. The second game of the series was equally exciting; however, Wisconsin came out on top after recording three goals in the second period to tally the 5-3 victory.

The last time these teams met, Geena Prough had a two-goal game in the 5-3 victory. Brooke Ammerman and Mallory Deluce each had three-point weekends.

Wisconsin is 6-1-0 against Ohio State in its last seven meetings and is 16-1-3 at Columbus.

Badger Notes

Wisconsin has five victories in series openers this season going 5-6-2. The Badgers have seven series splits this season. Wisconsin has only picked up two series sweeps, and suffered its first sweep of the season against No. 7 Minnesota Duluth.

The Badgers have netted 74 goals by 14 different Badgers. Wisconsin has out-shot opponents in every game but one this season, averaging 34.9 shots per game compared to the average shots allowed per game at 24.2. UW has taken 278 more shots than its opponents this season with a total of 908 shots.

Nineteen Badger skaters have contributed points this season, with nine scoring double digit figures. Brooke Ammerman is the team’s leading scorer with 28 points (16g, 12a) followed by Mallory Deluce (11g, 9a).

Wisconsin sophomore Carolyne Prevost has made a dramatic increase in her scoring output the second half of this season. In her first 12 games Prevost notched three assists, however, in her past 12 skates she has collected 14 points with seven goals and seven assists. She ranks third on the team in scoring with 17 points and is currently on an eight-game scoring streak.

The Badgers have had success on the penalty kill, however, gave up four power-play goals over the weekend against St. Cloud State. UW ranks 15th in the nation and fourth in the WCHA. The Badgers are 110/127 including a 86/97 mark during WCHA play.

The Badgers, who have recently struggled on the power play, picked up two goals with the man advantage against the Huskies last weekend. Wisconsin is just 14-of-114, and ranks sixth on the power play during WCHA play (11/91).

Scouting the Opponent: Ohio State (12-10-4, 9-9-2 WCHA)

The Buckeyes enter the weekend after splitting its series with WCHA opponent Bemidji State. The series was the first of three straight weekends at home for OSU.

In Friday’s 5-3 win over the Beavers, freshman Hokey Langan scored four of OSU’s five goals. In addition, she tallied an assist on the fifth goal. Her five-point total for the night tied OSU’s single-point game record, making her the fourth Buckeye to notch five points in one game. She currently boasts 37 points total (17g, 20a.) ranking fourth in the NCAA.

In the 5-3 victory, Chelsea Knapp collected 28 saves in net for Ohio State. Despite Saturday’s 1-0 loss in game two of the series, Knapp notched 32, for a total of 60 saves on the weekend. Although OSU dropped game two of the series, they outshot Bemidji State 38-33 in the loss.

The Buckeyes will play without forward Minttu Tuominen who is leaving for the 2010 Winter Olympics. She will meet up with the Finnish National Team next weekend in Colorado before traveling to Vancouver for the Games.

Last Time Out

The Badgers picked up two points against visiting St. Cloud State with a series split. Wisconsin was led by sophomore Carolyne Prevost who recorded her first career hat trick in Friday’s game and had an assist in UW’s loss on Saturday.

Prevost led the Badgers to a 5-3 victory over St. Cloud State Friday snapping UW’s three-game losing streak. Mallory Deluce returned for the first time in four games to add a goal and an assist in the Badgers first win of 2010.

Wisconsin scored three goals on special teams, but that wasn’t enough to outlast St. Cloud State. The Huskies fought back pulling out a 4-3 victory at the Kohl Center. The Badgers had two power-play goals at the hands of Brooke Ammerman and Mallory Deluce and a shorthanded goal from Brianna Decker to tie it up. In the last five minutes SCSU’s Meaghan Pezon gave the Huskies the advantage despite the Badgers 13 shot advantage.

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

yep.

at least sanders is back this weekend.

Consistently inconsistent has to be the motto of the team this year...

Really frustrating

Any idea why they were out?

They got the win today at least. See Ohio pulled goalie to get their second goal. See shots ratio was a little closer to usual too.

The Camp Randall Classic jerseys for both the men and women are being auctioned off. http://uwbadgers.cstvauctions.com/gallery.cfm

This is my first look at the women's sweater and I am impressed. The women's team is taking an extremely retro approach with a very simple WISCONSIN across the front. These jerseys call back to the jerseys worn by the UW hockey team in 1924:

To me, I am surprised the men didn't take advantage of this sweater design, since the UW archives also has great images of the UW mens team playing Michigan in a Feb. 1925 outdoor game... A missed opportunity, I think.

Wisconsin gave up two late goals to drop a 5-4 heartbreaker against Ohio State Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The 10th-ranked Badgers were outshot 48-31, marking only the second time this season UW was outshot in a game.

After gaining the 2-1 lead late in the first period, Wisconsin wouldn’t surrender the lead again until the final seconds of regulation when freshman Hokey Langan stuffed in the game-winner from the far edge of the goal crease with only nine seconds left in regulation.

After falling 5-4 to Ohio State in the last seconds of game one on Friday night, Wisconsin answered with a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink to split the series with the Buckeyes. After Saturday’s victory, the Badgers now have sole possession of third place in the WCHA behind Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth.

MADISON, Wis. – Many of the student-athletes on the Wisconsin women’s hockey team will be going back to their roots when the Badgers hit the ice in Camp Randall Stadium on Feb. 6.

The Badger women and men will take part in a once-in-a-lifetime event in the Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Classic. The women’s team will kick off the day at 2 p.m. in a WCHA matchup against Bemidji State and the men play Michigan at 5 p.m.

Most of the UW women’s hockey players grew up in cold-weather climates where they had easy access to ponds or outdoor rinks. Check out the photo gallery of UW players playing outdoors. For some, they even made rinks in their backyards.

Junior Anne Dronen a Chaska, Minn., native who grew up on a property with three ponds, would clear one every year using a snowblower, Bobcat or shovel. With the help of a hose, Dronen and her brother would smooth the surface to create a hockey rink.

“(Playing) outside is fun because you get in touch with the elements and you have a really good feel for the game and where it comes from,” said Dronen. “Nature is definitely a factor when you are playing outdoors. Some days are colder than others, but nothing beats the atmosphere.”

Freshman Saige Pacholok had a similar experience when her father created a rink in the backyard, making it easy for her and her brother to practice every day. A few years later, she moved into the city of Edmonton, Alberta, where she was able to go to an outdoor pond located just blocks from her house.

Pacholok’s biggest fans that day will be her uncle Dean Krawec, who was severely injured in an industrial accident over 16 years ago and is now confined to a wheelchair, her brother Ethan and her father Richard. Krawec never misses a game, whether he is following at home via the internet or making a trip out to Madison, which is why he chose the Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Classic to celebrate his 40th birthday on Feb. 6.

“We’re going to bring people together and it’s going to be a really good experience,” said Pacholok. “Not just for the players, but as a fan of hockey and college hockey. It’s going to be very good for the people in the Madison area and for the people visiting. I know my family is excited and I can’t wait to have them here and hopefully give them a good game.”

The event isn’t just exciting for the players, but for the fans as well. With so many activities surrounding the classic (click here for info), it is sure to be a fan favorite as the Badgers try to draw the biggest crowd in college hockey history.

“I’m really excited because in Edmonton, they had the Heritage Classic where the Edmonton Oilers played the Montreal Canadiens,” said Pacholok. “I wasn’t there, but I was watching it, and I think the atmosphere was amazing more than anything.”

“I think it would be a good day for a family to come out and bring the kids and get to watch both the women and the men compete outdoors,” said Dronen. “If it’s one of those pretty days in the winter when the sun is shining and somewhat warm, I think we’ll be fine.”

The Weather Channel predicts a 32-degree high and an overcast sky for the showdown, but the players are prepared to play in anything.

“Back home we would play in extremely cold weather,” said Pacholok. “If you are having fun and you are working hard, it’s not even a factor at all. I think it just brings more charisma to the experience.”

Many of Dronen and Pacholok’s Badger teammates have grown up playing outdoors, but for some, Camp Randall will be their first experience. For juniors Kelly Nash and Olivia Jakiel, they didn’t have outdoor ponds in their backyard growing up in California. Senior Kyla Sanders, a Fort Myers, Fla., native, also grew up in a warm weather state.

“It will be my first time playing outside,” said Sanders. “I have always wanted to skate outside and skate on a pond, so I can’t wait for this experience.”

While some will be reminded of childhood memories, they will all be experiencing the Camp Randall atmosphere together.

Madison, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin Athletic Department, in partnership with the Food Allergy Association of Wisconsin, is hosting its second of two "Allergy Friendly" games at the Kohl Center this Sunday.

The women's hockey game vs. Bemidji State on Sunday, February, 7 at 2pm will be designated as an "Allergy Friendly" game. For this event, a number of special accommodations will be put in place to allow families with food allergies to enjoy a Badger game.

According to the Food Allergy Association of Wisconsin, there are hundreds of kids and adults in the greater-Madison area who have difficulties attending sporting events due to the presence of allergens such as peanuts and tree nuts, says Sheree' Godwin, president of the group.

Those affected by food allergies can suffer life-threatening reactions if they accidentally ingest or come in contact with certain foods.

"It is so encouraging that an organization such as UW Athletics would be proactive and willing to makes games safe for those with food allergies," Godwin says. "As a family with three children with food allergies, we are very excited to have the opportunity like this to take the kids to see the Badgers play."

Badger student-athletes are no exception when it comes to dealing with food allergies. Ben Street, a senior captain on the men's hockey team suffers from peanut allergies. At a young age, Street's parents informed him of his allergies and worked with him on the safety measures he must take on a day-to-day basis. Traveling away from Madison for road games poses additional concerns. He won't eat cookies or special deserts at the hotel, avoids protein bars and works closely with the athletic training staff to ensure an epipen is available should he need it. Given all the precautions Ben must take in his life, he can certainly sympathize with families affected by food allergies.

Making the Kohl Center "Allergy Friendly "

In consultation with the Food Allergy Association of Wisconsin, all concession stands at the Kohl Center will remove food items that could induce an allergic reaction including: -shelled and un-shelled peanuts, candy with nuts, caramel corn with nuts and ice cream with nut products. Products processed in facilities in which nut peanuts are also produced will not be sold in stands. Patrons can also view an ingredient list below for the concession stands' most popular food items. In addition, sections 117, 118 and 119 will receive an elevated level of cleaning to ensure a safer environment for affected patrons to sit in.

Complete Release in PDF Format

Despite these accommodations, fans with food allergies are still encouraged to use normal precautions, as these designated games cannot be guaranteed to be 100 percent allergy free.

In addition to the special accommodations, families with food allergies are being offered a special ticket offer for each game. For this special event, adult ticket prices will be priced at $3 and $1 for youth/senior tickets.

MADISON, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association named Wisconsin freshman Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) Rookie of the Week for the week of Feb. 3. Decker earned her third honor of the season for her contributions last weekend when she recorded a five-point series and her first collegiate hat trick as the Badgers split with Ohio State from Jan. 29-30.

Decker had a hand in both of Wisconsin's power-play goals with a goal and an assist last Friday night in a 5-4 loss. The Badgers held a 4-3 advantage with less than four minutes remaining.

In the series finale last Saturday, Decker scored all of Wisconsin's goals, including two in the third period, as the Badgers skated to a 3-2 victory over the host Buckeyes to take sole possession of third place in the league standings. In addition to her five points in the series, Decker also fired 15 shots on goal including 11 in the victory. After being sidelined due to injury and therefore only competing in 19 games for the Badgers this season, Decker ranks second on the team in both points (21) and goals (12).

Decker received this award for the first time on Oct. 7 after tallying two goals in UW's 3-0 win over North Dakota on Oct. 3. In addition, the WCHA named Decker the Rookie of the Week for the second time on Dec. 9 after she was credited with two assists in the Badgers 3-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 4 and a goal in the Badgers 2-2 draw with the Bulldogs on Dec. 6.
