The No. 9 Wisconsin women’s hockey team (16-10-3, 13-9-1 WCHA) defeated the Bemidji State Beavers (8-14-7, 7-9-7 WCHA), 6-1, in the first ever Culver’s Camp Randall Hockey Classic on Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers played in front of an NCAA-record crowd of 8,263 fans in the second-ever women’s hockey outdoor showdown.

Sophomore Carolyne Prevost (Sarnia, Ontario) scored the first goal in Camp Randall history at the 16:53 mark when she broke away from the Bemidji State defense and backhanded it in to put the Badgers up 1-0.

Freshman Saige Pacholok (Edmonton, Alberta) and junior Kelly Nash (Bonita, Calif.) recorded the first and secondary assists. The goal marked Prevost’s ninth goal of the season and extended her point streak to 11 games.

Wisconsin increased the deficit with 12:54 left in the first period when Nash passed the puck to freshman Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.). From inside the right face-off circle, Decker sent a smooth wrist shot past Bemidji State’s Alana McElhinney.

The Badgers kept up the pressure on the Beavers, outshooting Bemidji 13-2 in the first 20 minutes of play.

Once again, Wisconsin proved its defensive power, as the Badgers continued to control possession offensively by keeping the puck out of their defensive zone for the majority of the second period.

Badgers senior captain Jasmine Giles (Ottawa, Ontario) capitalized on a power play when she sent a left-handed wrist shot from the left face-off circle into the goal at the 10:01 mark. Pacholok was credited with her second assist of the afternoon, and Brittany Haverstock (Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia) added the secondary assist.

From the blue line, Decker centered the puck to Nash who passed the puck to Prevost on the left side of the goal. Prevost dished it back to Decker and from the crease, Decker tallied her second goal to give the Badgers the 4-0 lead with 4:04 left in the second period.

At the close of the second frame, Wisconsin dominated the shot chart, leading the Beavers 29-6.

With just 5:58 left in the contest, from the right face-off circle, Decker passed the puck to Prevost. From behind the red line Prevost centered the puck to Nash who one-timed it in for her fifth goal of the season.

Bemidji State’s Jamie Hatheway scored BSU’s loan goal at the 15:56 mark.

Senior Kyla Sanders (Fort Myers, Fla.) solidified the 6-1 victory with 1:14 left in the contest. From the slot, sophomore Brooke Ammerman (River Vale, N.J.) passed the puck to Sanders who pushed the puck past McElhinney from the left side of the crease.

Nash finished Saturday's contest with a career-high four points, scoring a goal and tallying three assists.

The last time Nash had a 3-point game was in Wisconsin’s 8-0 shutout over Syracuse on Oct. 4, 2008, her previous career-best.

The Badgers dominated offensively, outshooting the Beavers 42-13. Freshman Becca Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) finished with 13 saves in net for Wisconsin, and McElhinney recorded 36 for BSU.

Wisconsin finished 1-for-3 with the man-advantage and the Beavers were 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Badgers’ record-setting crowd surpassed the 6,889 fans that attended the Sun Life Frozen Fenway doubleheader on Jan. 8, 2010. In that game, the first outdoor game in women’s college hockey history, New Hampshire defeated Northeastern, 5-3.

Wisconsin looks to sweep the series against Bemidji State on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
Great game by the Badgers!

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

So after a 6-1 win yesterday outside the Badgers have been flat in their return inside....

Bemidji Leads 2-0 in the third...

:(

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

I went to the game today, yikes! Just couldn't put the puck in the net. I think they outshot Bemidji 16-2 in the third or some crazy number. A lot of season ticket holders must've decided to stay home, I didn't think it was anywhere close to the 2088 that were credited with being there.

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

I cannot believe that the Badgers lost yet another game to a team that they are better than. I was pretty much hockey-ed out after yesterday so I did miss the game today, but was stunned when I found out the score. Puts a real damper on what was a dominating performance at Camp Randall.

The harsh reality is starting to sink in that the Badgers may only get in the NCAAs by winning the WCHA tourney. Either that or win out in the regular season (which would mean beating Minnesota twice more) and getting to the WCHA final. The fact that they have work to do to even lock-up home-ice in the first round is unbelievable.

Even with all the personnel & coaching turnover, to be at this point has to be considered a disappointment.

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

As long as I'm in a bad mood, I might as well take another shot at the athetic dept. administration. For some reason, I didn't occur to me until just now that "they" had the band playing at a warm-up tailgate party rather than the women's game happening only several hundred feet away.

It's simply disrepectful to a program that has won three of the last four national titles.

I'm sure somebody will defend the athletic dept. and/or Mike Leckrone with some excuse why they couldn't play at the women's game, but I find it unacceptable.

Despite outshooting Bemidji State (9-14-7, 8-9-7 WCHA) 36-20, No. 9 Wisconsin (16-11-3, 13-10-1 WCHA) fell 2-0 to the Beavers to split the series Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
BSU’s ability to capitalize with the man advantage earned them both goals and their sixth shutout win of the season.

The first period began with a slow start from the Badgers with the Beavers taking the lead at the 7:39 mark. From the boards, BSU’s Annie Bauerfeld found Montana Vichorek in front of the blue line. Vichorek took a hard shot that deflected off of a Wisconsin defender into the right side of the net. Keirstin Visser was credited with the secondary assist.

The neck-on-neck competition continued in the second period. The Badgers outshot Bemidji State 13-8, but the score remained slated at 1-0 heading into the second intermission.

Wisconsin tried to make a comeback, however, BSU’s goaltender, Alana McElhinney, turned away all of Wisconsin’s 17 shot attempts.

The Beavers sealed the victory with 16:38 left in the contest when from between the left face-off circle and the crease, BSU’s Erin Cody sent the puck past Wisconsin freshman Becca Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.). Vichorek and Bauerfeld both tallied their second assists of the game.

BSU finished 2-for-5 on the power play and Wisconsin went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

McElhinney had a season-high 36 saves and recorded her first win of the season for BSU. Ruegsegger finished with 18 saves for Wisconsin.

The last time Wisconsin was shutout was on Oct. 10, 2009 when Bemidji State recorded a 1-0 win in Coleraine, Minn.

Wisconsin hosts their second-to-last conference series against Minnesota State on Feb. 12 and Feb. 14. The puck drops at 2 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Sunday, which is also Senior Day for the Badgers.
Definetly a letdown after the performance they put on at the CRC on Saturday, but the plain and simple fact is that BSU capitalized on power play opportunities whereas the Badgers did not.
Hopefully they can rebound with a couple wins next weekend against Minny State.

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

BadgerBooster,

It can be done. After a great Game 1 of Hockey, I watched our opponents self-destruct this past weekend. The Badgers still have a chance so believe!

As for your team not being supported by pep bands and the like- you're preaching to the choir. We suffer the same issue up here and I've even begged to be a backup mascot just for the womens' game. I can skate and don't mind hamming it up. But there's just not the same support for our respective awesome programs and what they bring to the table for our schools.

Keep beleiving and we'll see you in the WCHA finals! Please, I'd like to play a respectable team such as yours.

Amen to that. I often feel bad for the ladies because it seems like the fans focus so much on the mens' team and constantly over look the womens' team.
Thats why it was so nice after the 1st intermission on Saturday when the girls' team was walking from the locker room back towards the field and the entire crowd stopped and cheered for them.
You could really see how much the team appreciated it. Their faces lit right up and you could see they all had a big smile on their face. If only more people would get behind womens' hockey.
Id love to go to more Badger womens' hockey games, but a lot of them are during the afternoon when Im at work or they are on a day when the mens' team is also playing.
Im pretty sure my girlfriend would kill me if I bailed on her to go watch the womens' games all the time. Shes pretty cool about my obsession with hockey, but between us going to the mens' games, watching the NHL on TV, me playing in local pickup hockey leagues during the week and listening to me talking about hockey much of the time; Im sure she is pretty close to her limit of how much hockey she can stand.

Time to dump the NHL on TV, at least until their playoffs start. By then everything else is finished so spouses/girlfriends don't mind so much. ;)

The NHL would be the easiest thing for me to dump for now. No way am I going to quit going to the Badger hockey games or playing in the local pickup hockey league.
At least after this weekend the Badger women wont have any more home games this season, so that will take away 1 distraction.
Of course, you still have the Badger basketball games, snowmobiling and in a few months spring turkey hunting season, fishing and golf start up again; so Im probably going to be in the dog house no matter what I do. ;)

Do the dishes, make the bed, and keep the toilet seat down and you'll be golden and not have to sacrifice anything. ;)

The WCHA quarterfinals start February 27th, with Madison a likely site at this point. Oh, and don't forget about the Olympic hockey games, with all of those past and future Badger ties.:)

Re: Wisconsin 2009-2010 Season

According to eyewitness reports, it came from the bench area (although I guess the reports could be wrong and it just dropped from one of the holes in the ceiling).
