Less than 17" of snow on Sunday night pretty much shut Metro Airport down, so I can't exactly rub in NE's snowpocalypse. I do, however, dispute that 16.7" is the third-highest single storm total for Detroit. I remember a storm over New Years (1998, I think?) that dropped a couple feet. We were coming home from FL, and after landing we ended up sitting on the tarmac for over 3 hours until a gate opened up.

We got hit pretty hard last year as well. I thought that one was worse. That one actually shut down main roads around here.

I thought that seemed low. I remember back in the day when Detroit had fleets of snowplows and real winters.

Ice dam problems this morning. Water dripping through the ceiling :eek::mad:. Fortunately it's in a screen porch (which seems like an odd place for ice dam problems, but the pitch is rather shallow, and I think that's the problem). So I spent the morning shoveling the roof and trying to break up the ice dam without damaging the shingles.

Over 60 inches of snow in the Boston area since January 23rd. 12-18 more today. Insane.

Almost nothing here in the DC area since early January. But sooner or later we'll get a 3 or 4 inch storm, and the locals will react pretty much the way Boston might to 3 feet.

And now the MBTA is suspending all service tonight at 7pm and all day tomorrow.

This is the 41st winter in which I have lived in DC. I think that 3 or 4 inches total in a winter is probably above the median value if you don't count the snow which melts on contact with the streets and sidewalks.

I think the worst problem with that dump we got a week ago sunday was that it all hit on Superbowl Sunday. That's a good 4 hour window where nothing would be moving on the roads. a little regular vehicle traffic would have helped to keep the snow from drifting up a lot. Even if it was just 4 wheel drive trucks and SUV's out. Either way, it was still a farking mess around here.

True. It's only my 4th winter here, and I moved from just 2 hours north in PA, but it's amazing the difference that makes in snowfall itself and the way the people react to it.

This one baffles me. If I understand it right, the reason they can't do it in the first place is because of all the chemicals in the snow. So instead of dumping it in the harbor, they have giant snow melting machines that burn thousands of gallons of fuel. The snow melting machines produce a lot of chemical-laden water. Where does the water go? I truly doubt that it gets treated to remove the chemicals.

Those of us in CNY, and probably also our brethren in WNY, laugh at the freaking out over snow. I'm pretty sure that in Pulaski NY, however many inches Boston has this year is what Pulaski gets in one snowfall.
