Who's next for a move up to D1?

Are there any real plans or is this a wishful thinking? SNHU already has their name on the arena where the Monarchs played. They’ve grown an amazing amount so this isn’t far fetched.

Wishful thinking by Chuck and myself. We both would like to see the addition of SNHU to HEA, in part to facilitate a “Northern Bean Pot.” My bean pot version would include UNH, SNHU, Mack, and UMass-Bazin. I forget Chuck’s version but he also has ruminated about St Anselms also going Div 1, in which case their on-campus arena would be a good fit for Atlantic Hockey.

Tennessee State has already announced their D1 hockey program

Not really. They announced they would start club hockey in 2024-2025 season.

"TSU Hockey will commence its inaugural season in 2024, signaling a new era for the university. The team will begin as a club-level program but aspires to achieve NCAA Division I status for both men's and women's sides in the near future. While no specific timeline exists for achieving varsity NCAA status, TSU is committed to building a solid foundation for long-term success."

Now go look at their schedule:

According to their website schedule they aren't playing anyone at the club level in the next 2 seasons.

It's a rumor for D1, heck it's a rumor for club hockey........

Actually, they announced a few months ago that they are going Division 1 in 2025-26, and have already hired a coach.

Thanks. I stand corrected on their approach & timeline. But until they actually field a team, with a budget in place, I'll view it as a rumor. Maybe just semantics. Remember all the announcements concerning Illini?

They already have players committed.

That sorry chapter should tell us not to expect any schools in the P-5 (actually P4+2) conferences to launch a D1 hockey program that would compete for revenue, resources, and attention. The football god is supreme, and the football god must be fed.

Can that work if they are Canadian university?

Yes. The NCAA opened their organization up to Canadian schools. Quite a while ago in fact. But, the schools have to follow very strict protocols. There was one school who seriously considered an NCAA football program, but eventually dropped the idea. I’m not aware of anyone who has joined in any sport.

I think Simon Fraser is already a member of the NCAA at the D2 level.

I believe that was Simon Fraser that was weighing football, or even had it for a short time. If I recall correctly, there were D-II teams that had them on their schedule and then they dropped the sport and left those teams with an open date.

Binghamton seems to be in a holding pattern. They'd previously said they would move "aggressively" to add DI hockey for 2024-2025, but the AD said in late July this year that the decision had been tabled and "In a perfect world, we'd have men's and women's ice hockey... We still have some logistics to work out. We still don't have an arena right now. So those are some of the logistics that have to work out in time."

The arena thing is presumably a real issue, with the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena really outdated and in need of replacement. Hard to know how likely it is.
