Re: Who will win the "National" USA Invitational 19U tournament

Assabet Valley's U19 Roster, other than two exceptions, is otherwise made up entirely of girls who reside less than an hour's drive from the rink, and many much closer than that.

The two exceptions...Ashley Salerno from Maine who has been a faithful member of AV for many years, and does NOT attend a New England Prep School, meanwhile Ann Doherty formerly of Team Illiinois is admttedly the type of player that you are thinking of and does indeed attend a very prominent New England Prep School (alma mater of George W. Bush among others).

Beyond those two exceptions, these are girls from the greater Boston area who have nearly all been regulars with AV for many, many years.

They are a club team, and anything less than full and true congratulations would be simply inappropriate.

Way to go, girls!!! :D

Ashley Salerno attends North Yarmouth Academy in Maine

Congrats indeed. While AV has won a lot of National titles over the years, almost every year at U16, this is their first U19 title in quite some time.

Re: Who will win the "National" USA Invitational 19U tournament

Congratulations to the Assabet Valley U-19 Red team on winning the USA Hockey National Championship. After a slow start the team got it together and played an excellent tournament. You girls should be proud of your accomplishment. Enjoy!

Re: Who will win the "National" USA Invitational 19U tournament

Apologies for the late response. I'm new on here but I'd like to share my two cents.
Congrats to Assabet on a national championship. They had a very skilled team and worked hard throughout the tournament. Coming from someone who went to the game to enjoy some good hockey though, I would not say the better team won. Assabet controlled the play the first period for the most part, but from that point on SSM dominated. I believe the shots on goal by the end of the game were something like 40 to 20 in SSM’s favor. SSM hit 4 crossbars and had one puck go in the net just inside the post and come out, being ruled no goal, while spectors behind the boards, SSM and non SSM, speculated that it was in fact in the net.

The reffing was a point of interest to me. I previously mentioned the goal that was called off, and penalty inconsistency was another issue. For those of you familiar with the hockey world, it is my understanding that in most significant, highly competitive games refs are more reserved and let the players play. For the first 2 period or so the main ref did so, but during regular play she would periodically call what I perceived to be very weak penalties, for both teams, and let the more evident penalties slide. The most shocking of all to me was the fact that she called 4 in the 10 minutes overtime, 3 on SSM and 1 on Assabet. None of the penalties she called were blatant or caused a major turn over in the play and her making the calls eventually led to the game ending as Assabet scored with a minute left in the overtime on a powerplay. It is a heartbreaker when the refs participation in the game so highly effects the outcome.

Regarding the conversation about Assabet and Shattuck being regarded (or not) as a club, I know that both organizations take girls from an assortment of areas. Many speculate that SSM takes the top girls from the top girls organization around the US and Canada. Although I have not followed the program a whole lot, from what I have seen it seems they take mediocre players from these programs and develop them (with the exception of a few highly skilled girls). The fact that these two organizations have a pool of girls to recruit from is not their biggest advantage in my opinion. I believe these organizations are on more of an even playing field because both teams of composed of players who are on the ice every day, whether at SSM or at various prep schools out east. From my understanding it seems that Assabet is more of a tournament team, composed of players who are not as close and familiar with one another, or at least not on the level that the SSM girls seemed to be. As a player who previously played youth hockey, my most treasured memories were the ones I shared with my teammates that I became so close to and went through the highs and lows of the season with. I mean is that not why athletics are so cherished in our society and such an important aspect of the lives of so many youth today? I personally was never able to compete on a national level but I suspect that winning a national championship with those girls you spend so much blood, sweat, and tears with would truly be something unique and special. From what I could tell, Shattuck seemed to be composed of a group of girls that were fighting for one another, and Assabet struck me as a team of individuals.

Either way, congratulations to both teams for making it to the finals and to Assabet Valley, the 2010 u19 National Champions! And hats off to all the teams who competed and to USA Hockey and Green Bay for putting on a great tournament!

Very well put. It's nice to hear from someone that was at the game with absolutely no bias or pre-judgment going in. I did not see the game, but do know that there were times throughout the tournament where the refs called some penalties that perhaps shouldn't have been. Fortunately, of the ones I saw, I don't think they played a role in deciding the game's outcome. Of the National's games I've seen, these were the best, most consistently refereed ones to date.

I also feel your comments on the 2 top programs at this year's events are fairly accurate. While I may disagree on some minor points, your opinion and basis for it are strong. Thanks for posting and come back soon!

Re: Who will win the "National" USA Invitational 19U tournament

They reffing style definitely changed in OT.....The ref took her whistle out of her pocket, not put it away. SSM was short handed 6 of the 9 minutes of OT. The game was already running late without OT, so i figured the refs had to make the last flight out of Green Bay.

Welcome to the board. Like many out here you have no idea about Assabet or how the programs works. Earlier in this thread I explained a typical Assabet U19 schedule, so I won't bore everyone with another explanation. You are not familiar with the orginization and yet after one game you can call the whole team a group of individuals. Did you see any other Assabet games? Why were you out at the Nationals? Do you have a daughter playing? What level? What team? SSM maybe? It will be interesting to watch you future posts to see who you support.
The penalties ended up 6-6 and yes Shattuck had 3 in ot (one was a too many men on the ice). The last penalty was a trip and an obvious one. Funny how the refs did a good job when they had called the penalties 5-3 in favor of Shattuck during regulation, but then in OT they became bad officials. Assabet out shot and out played Shattuck in the first. Shattuck out shot and out played Assabet in the second and third. Assabet out shot and out played Shattuck in the OT. I don't know anything about the goal that you say went in, but to play alone, welcome to the 3 man system. the ref is late into the zone and sometimes they miss a goal scored on an initial rush. We have had goals disallowed as well. Last year against Ct stars for instance, but we had time to score another and didn't. It happens get ovet it.
Every Assabet player (except one) has at least 4 years in the Assabet program. We carried 2 out of district players which I gaurantee is the same number or less as every team out at the Nationals at the U-19 level.

Re: Who will win the "National" USA Invitational 19U tournament

I was also at the game and I also agree that SSM was the better team. I think the shots were 3-1 but clearly Sperry was the better goalie.

One thing that was mentioned on here that is mentioned in other threads is the refs. Why doesn't USA Hockey understand that we need refs (men or women) that can keep up with the play? Unless the ref has played at this level or higher, they should not be able to ref the national championship game.

Re: Who will win the "National" USA Invitational 19U tournament

Thanks for the update. The Rockets have some great talent - good speed and good hands. I've watched them destroy the NJ Colonials a few times this year, but the competition on the National stage is so much stronger than in NJ. I'll be curious to see how they fare against LA and Colorodo.

The USA Hockey site doesn't list the score for the Ohio Flames/Assabet game. Anyone know the result?

Yes the fabulous Rockets just dominated out in Green Bay. And the 'Thug' routine really went over well with all that had the misfortune of sitting next to this group of misfits and Jersey Shore wannabees. E---Yikes.

In case you haven’t noticed yet, hockey in NJ is a pretty small world. Take a deep breath and try smiling. You never know when your D might end up playing with kids whose parents you once called misfits and Jersey Shore wannabees.

If your D really is on the 14U team, then congrats and best of luck to her. I’ve heard that the Colonials 14U and 16U teams will be the teams to beat next season.

Great advice. Maybe it's harder to smile if you live in New Jersey? ;)
