Who here actually plays hockey?

Do you want one that's a tower setup - sectioned off to work like a mobile locker - or just a stuff pack style backpack? The towers start around $150 while the stuff styles start around $60. I have to say, seeing one of my hockey buddies use his tower pack, it's mighty appealing.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

What are you people, 10?

:p
I have a cheap, old style bag. The only thing "modern" about my equipment bag is that it has a couple side pockets for my skates. It works well for me, but I can see the attraction of a backpack. When you play in a building that has eight sheets of ice in a single location, parking lots get big and spreading the weight between too shoulders sure sounds good by the time you get to your locker room.

And jen's a girl, so you know... :p

my right shoulder is about 117 :p

The stuff kind - no way I am spending $150 on a bag... especially since I need new shin pads before I shatter a kneecap.

I have an old Nike one I got from Hockeygiant for free when I ordered my old vapor skates back in 2006. It's ok but about as small as it can get with a full set of gear (skate pockets on each side) and it has to be packed just the right way. You can get away with having it on one shoulder but can't you do that with the regular shoulder bags anyway and avoid the bad shoulder? You are so confusing Jen!!!!

Side note: Grabbed an APX2 on clearance at a killer price and this thing has me firing BBs all over the place. Must be the different kickpoint but whatever it is I'm loving it.

ps - nice job digging up an old thread.

The right stick makes a huge difference! I used to have some Vapor XV sticks back in the day (2009?) and I loved them - PM9, 102 flex. My shots have always been hard but the accuracy improved with them. After I broke them I was looking new sticks, and nothing could do match with the accuracy, not even other Bauer sticks. After a yet another generation of sticks came and went I found the Vapor X:40. While they're not as good as I remember the XV being, they're still pretty good and much better than other brands for me. So I bought 10 of them that year. I still have seven. Between having to take time off hockey and losing a lot of my strength, these things are just lasting for a long time.

Use a bag with one big zipper. No pockets or compartments. I'm old school because well I'm old.

Still use a Sher-Wood P.M.P. Woodie. Coffey curve. When I can't find one after I break what I have I use my old 2 piece Easton Synthesis with of course a sher wood Coffey curve blade.

I know that up until a few years ago you could still find Sher-Wood PMPs in stores. They might still make them, but my local hockey shop doesn't carry them. I've never searched for them online.

I've been using a $40 Fury shaft for the past six years. Gone through a few blades but that's about it. I don't even know what flex the thing is...I just know I like it's length and feel and from there I just use it to put the puck where and how I would like it to go.

Now, if anyone can find me the Easton Zubrus blades from ~1999...I'd buy 50 of them. Strangest curve I've ever seen but I loved it. Closest I can find these days are some of the Sakic blades...which are similar, sort of, but they're not the same. The Zubrus was like a corkscrew with this awesome pocket down on the heel. All moot these days as I haven't even skated in about 20 months, but that blade is a winner for any adult player smart enough to realize that wasting his time with slappers makes him not only completely ineffective, but also a jack*****.

As for the bag, I'm so old I remember being able to put everything into an army duffle bag!

There is always THAT guy that can barely skate, but spends time working on his slap shot. I hate that guy.

Someone suggested I carry it on the other shoulder. The thought boggles my mind. I don't think I can do it. Ask your wife if she could carry her purse on her other shoulder - bet she can't. :)

I ended up getting a Bauer backpack-style bag (and some shin guards) from hockeygiant. Hopefully it has enough room for all my stuff, as I am the team girl scout whenever someone needs a screwdriver, screws, extra tape, etc.

Yeah, but that's from your pitching career and punching out your annoying coworkers, don't blame the hockey gear bag for that.;)

but I'm a lefty, so I throw a cross with the other shoulder. ;)

I can still find them in Fargo/Moorhead. I still have a couple at home that have yet been used. When I find them I usually get 3-4 of them.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Played in my usual pickup game last night except for one thing - a Brrrmidgi State U women's player was on the ice last night. Women's hockey players have come a long, long way in the last few years. Wow. The guys playing in this game are not the greatest players by any stretch of the imagination, but we have a few guys who are pretty good. She absolutely made us all look foolish out there and she didn't even play hard. Except for one play, where she came in with the puck, split the D, did this spin move and clanked it off the post. I'm glad I wasn't on the ice for that and just got to watch it.

The reason this made such an impression on me is that for a number of years, we used to play with a woman who was a center for UMD's team back when they were putting together championships some 15 years ago, she stopped playing with us when she started having babies. While she was great using her stick and knew positioning as well as anyone she was at best an average skater for speed, and she was by far the best women who would play with us. Now, she can't even hold a candle to this young lady played with us a last night. She was really something.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I had to return my backpack-y bag because it didn't fit my gear. Oh well. New helmet is next on the list, since mine is pretty old and probably not all that safe (although it's a little late for that now, since I already have a concussion :p) Is a $200+ helmet really necessary for non-check hockey?

I have one in my garage. :) I don't even think it's broken...

Can you still buy two-piece sticks? Our local store doesn't have them anymore (although they do have blades). I liked mine a lot, but then snapped the shaft on it and couldn't find anywhere to get a new one.

It is amazing the number of opportunities there are for girls to start playing hockey now. I'm about 15 years too old to have enjoyed it (and from the wrong area - boys did not even play hockey in my hometown - if they did, they had to play outside because there wasn't a rink).

A $200 helmet? Did King Midas start selling them?

I have a Cascade M11 helmet (AKA the Mark Messier helmet). It was about $100 three years ago (hockey monkey or hockey giant, I forget which) and is easily the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned. It's light weight, breathes well, and is designed for better concussion protection. At the time I bought it, it was rated the best for that very reason. I don't know if anything newer has come to market since then. It's great for sizing, too, because it has a sliding adjustment that you can operate with your fingers and stays secure until you change it manually. I don't normally advocate a specific product because everybody likes something different, but this is one I fully support.
