Who here actually plays hockey?

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Game 1 down for the charity hockey tournament I'm playing this weekend. We tied 7-7. My team only has nine skates, so of course we had two ejections. A two-man bench makes for fun hockey, let me tell you.

2 ejections in a charity tourney?

Well played.

:D

The best part is most of us in the tournament play pickup hockey together the rest of the year. What's adds to the ridiculousness of this is that they also had 2 ejections, and one of their guys was ejected for the sh** last year. We play pickup and he's all sorts of calm, but then it comes to this tourney and he's wound up like a freshly coiled spring. I'd be curious to see what the guy is like during a league game.

Also, I think the second set of ejections were done because the refs started to lose control of the game. It got pretty ugly before they started tossing people.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I played from around age 8 up through high school hockey in Pennsylvania. High school was my last competitive hockey. Since then, I still play leisurely on occasion (i.e. pick-up nights at the rink, adult rec leagues, and such) but I want to get out more.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Final recap of the weekend tournament: We won the round robin play with a 2-0-1 record, game scores 7-7, 4-3, 8-6. We then won the championship game 6-1, which was a 2-1 game until about 10 minutes left in the third.

The team we played where the ejections took place, they had troubles throughout the entire tournament, tons of penalties and a couple more ejections. My team had some issues during the third game with penalties, a bunch of phantom calls and a disallowed goal for kicking the puck in the net when the puck never went into the net - it was a pass to the guy who did then shoot it into the net. Even the other team was ragging on that ref for his junk calls - and all of them were focused on my team. It turns out that my team's goalie volunteered to ref a game that morning where this ref was ejected for starting in on my goalie about an offsides call of all things. Yes, this was a highly professional tournament, clearly.

We've been dealing with that every week. One week we had 7, one guy got into a fight in the first minute and we were down to 6. 2 weeks ago we had 8 and a guy separated his shoulder and his buddy took him to the hospital (back to 6).

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I took a puck to the sternum Saturday night during a very unimpressive clearing attempt. I tried to do my weightlifting routine last night and that sh** hurt. So now I'm thinking of buying shoulder pads. Also, I'm thinking of actually buying breezers after taking a couple pucks to my thigh. Maybe at 37 I'm just getting old and this junk hurts more these days. I'm not sure.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I would get breezers for nothing other than you look more respectable than the guys who wear those long hockey pants.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Looks can go **** themselves. I'm going to wear what allows me the best movement and provides the protection I need. I'll let me skill, or lack thereof, speak for itself on the ice.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

As I recall he wears sweats.

I used to. Then I bought a pair of roller hockey pants because the sweatpants would wear out after a could months. After buying the roller hockey pants, the extra $40 in cost more than paid for itself in not having to replace torn up sweat pants.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

They do make padded hockey shirts. I've never worn them so I don't know what they feel like, but it might be something to look into instead of shoulder pads. I personally can't stand wearing shoulder pads during pick-up games. Way too hot.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

The last pair of breezers I remember having were cooperalls size medium. That was back in college era men's league - over 20 years ago

I don't wear shoulder pads either.

Every once in a great while I'll get hit by a shot or fall on a hip, but it's really pretty rare. Most nights I don't fall ever.

Can't imagine going back to full pads now. Would be like wearing a straightjacket.

No hockey pants for me. WalMart has $5 sweats and they usually last a couple of years.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I didn't wear shoulder pads for years, but took a nasty spill into the boards at one point. Worn them ever since.

Kinda like every time I think about going to a half shield, I invariably take a puck or stick off the cage to remind me why I wear it.

I went to a cage (from a half shield) about 5 or 6 years ago and have been smoked in the cage at least 10 times since then.

Took me one skate to get used to it. Won't ever go back to a shield.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Or when crosschecking someone in the spine. ;)

When I was still playing I'd roll out the old school Christian* aluminum shaft for that. Yeah, it's like pulling a plow; but, it is the right tool for the job. ;)

*Yes, Christian, pre-Easton getting into the market on their own. The shaft is painted "Christian Pro-1000" and there's a small Easton logo on a narrow side.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Yeah nobody I know wears shoulder pads.

I'd say about 20% of the guys I play with wear them. I never thought they were worth it for playing pick up hockey, but I'd never taken a puck to the sternum before this either.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Yeah I'm not saying you shouldn't wear them, I think a lot of it depends on the league you're in and the skill level etc. In a league where slappers are legal I'd probably recommend wearing everything, especially if there's a bunch of lower skill guys with little to no control over their shots. And even amongst the higher levels of play accidents happen. One guy who was a top player at Stillwater had to get a bunch of stitches cuz his buddy caught him with a shot to the dome in practice I guess. Hadn't seen him for months and now he wears a full clear shield.
