When I win the lottery....

Re: When I win the lottery....

$900 million!!!

Do I hear

$1 BILLION?!?!

BTW, the two worst states to win the lottery, tax wise, are New York and Maryland. Of course I live in one of them.

Coincidentally Maryland, along with New Jersey, is one of the worst states to die in.

Re: When I win the lottery....

Just in time for this record breaking Jackpot: State of Illinois STILL without budget, agrees to pay out lottery winners.

I bought $10 worth. Figured I'd blow it on something stupid anyway, why not that. Also chipped in $6 at work with four other co-workers. They even made the guy that lives in the podunk town buy the tickets because "you never hear of a big winner from a big city."

Only play a few times a year, when the jackpots get stupid. And yes, I am fully aware of the math that I'm sitting on worthless scraps of paper. :p

Also, I seem to fall into the "Wait, call a lawyer, call a fund manager, and let no one else know until things are in motion and then claim the money," category.

Was funny listening to the co-workers discuss their dreams. It ranged from 'visiting every national park in the US and traveling everywhere from a motorhome,' to 'private South Pacific island,' to 'e-mailing the picture of me with the giant check to my boss as my two-week notice and then moving to the mountains."

Re: When I win the lottery....

I've already told my boss that if it ever comes to pass, I'm leaving on the spot, no notice.

Re: When I win the lottery....

Does anybody know, do you have to take the entire cash value yourself? Or can you take 10% for yourself and transfer the rest to say Utica College (then soon to be renamed College of the UCBadger)?

Or, is it something like the comment of the FBI guy in the movie American Treasure.............."Oh, somebody has to pay the taxes".

I'd live where I live now, house is fine, shop would become massive though. need something to do or I'd be a lush. Muscle cars would become a full time hobby.

From many of the stories I've read from previous big jackpot winners, you can not stay in your same house. The hassle factor will drive you away. Not to mention the local media, which in small cities/towns can be relentless.

I don't think people realize how much $400 million suddenly makes people around them behave.

That's why I stated earlier I would move out to a location not in my name and cancel all my phone numbers before I claim the prize. Nobody will be able to reach me unless I want to reach them.

And in NYS, you have to mug for the cameras, so I definitely want to "disappear" right afterwards.

Varies by state. Some allow you to claim anonymously, some allow you to create The Ha Ha I Won Memorial Trust and have it claim the ticket so your name isn't publicized. Some make you come out and mug for the cameras holding a giant check so your daughter gets kidnapped, everyone who bumps into you on the sidewalk sues, and your fifth cousin thrice removed Jim Bob Cooter is now guilt tripping you for a cool million to start his chain of topless Suicide Girl drive-thru pancake restaurants.

That is why step #1 is lawyer.

In the words of a wise man: The more money we come across, the more problems we see.

And you and I know just the place! :)

Re: When I win the lottery....

For 25 million I can pay for all the Munn renovations and get naming rights for everything.

I'd probably name it the Mason Ice Arena, but I'll have fun with everything else and keep the football name for a hockey building theme going.

Jalen Watts-Jackson Return North entrance
Michael Geiger Windmill south entrance
Kirk Cousins You Like That Hall of Fame
The Players Are Working Their Tails Off And The Coaches Are Screwing It Up John L Smith Coaching Offices

And I'll claim it under the I'm In The Empire Business Heisenberg LLC.

I'd build a new arena for UAA if I could. Wouldn't name it after me, I'd just want my own seat, all green seats except one gold seat. That way I can walk up and go "you're in my seat." :D

I didn't think of that but you are probably right, I live in a town of 600 so that issue might be even worse :) I'd hate to leave, I love it here. maybe I could buy the town:)

Back in the 90s there was another huge jackpot and I remember some friends and I got to have dinner with the then-President of BU and two of the Exec VPs. The talk at dinner turned to the jackpot. I said if I won I would bankroll the new arena. I could see their ears perk up. I said "You don't even have to name it after me, since you guys never spelled my name right when I was here. All I want is four seats, center ice, cushioned, and no one else has cushioned seats. Oh, and wait staff to bring me snacks." And the President says "We could do that!" And then I said it has to go up before the first dorm." The plans for that land were for one high rise dorm, then the arena and rec center, then the second high rise. He tells me that the dorm was going up first. Looked right at him and said "if I give you $20 million for the arena, it goes up before the dorm." Like it ever would've come to that.

Needless to say, the next year at the auction where we won the chance for that dinner, they instituted a minimum bid that was much higher than what we bid for it. Heh.

If I give a $100 million to a University I'm doing whatever I can legally do. If I wanna call everybody Jeff, I'm doing it. If I give you money to build an arena, the arena goes up first, I get my seat, and call me for the meeting with the Daktronics guys Jeff.
