When I win the lottery....

Re: When I win the lottery....

They say the pot's gonna be $800 million+. You take the lump sum, figure you get half of it.

So, $400 million. $100 million for Maine to build a new hockey rink, another $25-50 million to endow the program so they can hire good people and recruit however and wherever they have to to be competitive.

$250 million left, a million or two each to members of my family and close friends, leaves me with $225 million or so to live however I please. Nice house, second home somewhere in California, more bikes, a few cars, awesome home theater and music setup, all the blu-rays, albums and cds I could ever want, lots of travel and good food. Probably die with $200+ million left, most off to various charities and endowments.

I would do nothing but ride my bikes in beautiful places all over the world, finally lose weight and get my *** in killer shape, listen to music and watch movies, and eat good food. Not fancy places, no high-brow restaurants, no 9000 bottle wine cellar for me. Perfectly happy with a good pizza and a Moat Mountain Miss V's Blueberry. Or several

Re: When I win the lottery....

All the lawyer/money management stuff mentioned already...

From there, a lot of my "luxury" stuff would be based around snowboarding... I'd privately fund a US Men's and Women's Alpine and SBX Snowboard racing program... I'd also find a job working as a snowboard instructor somewhere in New England or out West to stay busy...

Re: When I win the lottery....

I think it goes without saying that every one of us would contact a financial guy/lawyer first thing. Threads like this are for what to do after that.

And I paid the Math Tax and bought 3 tickets. First ones in maybe 6-7 years. *shrug*

When it's at this kind of payoff what's a couple of bucks gonna hurt?

Re: When I win the lottery....

Husband bought a ticket.

Probably would scale back my hours to 16 hours a month instead of 36 per week - basically work 1 week a month. From there, set up my siblings with money (and hubs sibs and nieces/nephews). Put a set amount aside for my parents with firm limits (unsure of how hubs would divvy to his). Probably buy a house in the country (Western Mass?) with some chickens. Spend my free time outside, making bread, and reading. I'd likely visit my sister (she's in Tanzania for 2016 for work) for a month or so. A few times a year for the foreseeable future, I'd travel to a foreign country and live with the locals.

Charitable donations for causes we believe in.

Re: When I win the lottery....

I'd love to do something like - pay for a police detail to sit at this one intersection to pull people over that go straight in a right turn only line. Could a private citizen with a lot of money pay to get pot holes fixed? Because that would be something I would do in a heartbeat.

Re: When I win the lottery....

I'd live where I live now, house is fine, shop would become massive though. need something to do or I'd be a lush. Muscle cars would become a full time hobby.

Exactly. I actually bought 3, because after my other purchases at the gas station, I knew it'd be $19 and change. For real.

I wouldn't mind buying the Old Chicago I go to. Keep everything the same, hey it's making money. I'd just own it. :)

Re: When I win the lottery....

After the lawyers and accountants setting up trust funds and paying off a lot of bills. ;)

Going with the long term payout. Some of the stuff I would really like to with the vast bulk of that money would still take a lot of time for it to implement, and the 30 years would give me more reasons to think long term about that money.

Start talking to high end architects about building arena's for GVSU Basketball and hockey. Thinking something close to the Ralph, but probably not quite that fancy unless there's others at GVSU that wouldn't mind having a little more input. But I am thinking along the lines of having a Ralph for hockey, a Betty for basketball, and maybe an extra arena for say women's hockey/practice, and other minor sports at GVSU. After that, sinking a lot more of the cash into endowments at GVSU, maybe something along the lines of being able to forever fund all of the assorted head coaches there.

Depending on just how much there is, I might take a swing at setting up endowments to aid the starting up of hockey programs at a lot of schools that college hockey would be a pretty good fit. Or really aid some of the smaller schools in keeping their hockey programs. Might have to see if I could put a few clauses in some of those school's endowments, set it up that if they do eventually have an NCAA D1 hockey program, they're required to give some other small school a home game every 3 years or so. Something around the lines of say around a quarter to half million to seed it, and work with the local boosters there to really fund it up more. Heck, it would be kind of a lark to set up a bunch of them at some SEC schools and pretty much set all of those endowments up that they would pretty much have to invite Huntsville into a league with them. And yeah, a really small one at the school in Tuscaloosa that would require their program to refer to themselves as Tuscaloosa, just to get back at them for trying to kill off Huntsville. Bare minimum there to start that endowment, but something to get a ball rolling there.

Here at the farm, the barn is getting a serious upgrade. New roof, solar panels, and a lot of other fancy upgrades. Brand new spanking new tractor with an enclosed cab, front end loader and all the toys, especially those for snow removal. Will probably get a bobcat to go along with it. Might as well build a new shed to put all of the toys in that. Probably another barn just for hay storage as well.

Other than that though, I would probably keep working, just probably cut back on my hours. Gives me something to do to occupy my time and help to keep me humble.

1 in 292 million chance to win, good luck with that:) almost 500 million cash payout, after taxes what 300 million? I think that could ruin your life pretty easily :);)

And that's assuming you're the only winner. If there are multiple winners, the jackpot is evenly distributed amongst all winners.

Better off taking the dollar bill, folding it in half, and putting it back in your pocket.

Or you look at that dollar, maybe five, and think of it as a small bit of entertainment expense and not an investment, because you know the likelihood of an actual payout being quite small. Your advice is suitable for those habitual players who do things like play the lottery instead of actually investing and saving for their retirement.

But then how could he tell us he's better than all of us who donated a few bucks to our local schools?

I play the lottery maybe 6-8 times a year. I know I'm not going to win, but it is fun to think about, and I'd probably just blow the money on a coffee anyway. I'd be happy winning one of the 'small' jackpots too.

Agreed.

Thought of something else, if I won: I'd wipe my arse with a $100 bill. Just to say I did it. :D

True, you can never put too high of a price on the chance to grandstand.

Also, it's the wildlife refuge fund in MN.
