What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

One of the warnings before d-loading says something about services that cost you money and directly call phone numbers....

Sorry I'm new to this... If I d-load this app I'm not going to start paying for simple service am I?!?

If you download Handscent nothing happens except that your text program changes. (make sure to make it the default) Nothing else happens you will pay for nothing.

If it worries you though download ChompSMS it is just as popular and very similar.

BTW whats great about google phones is if you update your gmail calendar it automatically uploads it to the stock Android calendar within seconds. No need to sync up at all it is standard.

Two more for Android:

The new Dolphin browser released yesterday is excellent. Also, Google Navigation seems to be out of beta. Download the update released yesterday - very nice.

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

Found another Android app that I'll actually keep:

TuneSync. Does what it says it does. Use WiFi connection to sync iTunes playlists with droid playlists.

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

My two fav iPhone apps are Red Laser and Around Me. Red Laser scans a UPC code and gives you online and brick and mortar store price comparisons. Around Me is great for travel.

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

My favorite app list is usually found at a dive bar. And it's probably not a good thing for me to have, but I love it anyway.

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/07/26/apple-iphone-jailbreak-unapproved-apps/
In addition to jailbreaking, other exemptions announced Monday would:

-- allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.

-- allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.

-- allow college professors, film students and documentary filmmakers to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism, commentary and noncommercial videos.

-- allow computer owners to bypass the need for external security devices called dongles if the dongle no longer works and cannot be replaced.

Ignore the jailbreaking aspect, reread the part where unlocking is "now legal"

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

Anyone find any new good apps lately?

I downloaded a couple, some have been useful, others suck. Here is my complete list now:
Steel - 3rd party internet browser
Poynt - Phone book/food finder/movie ticket app
Google Skymap - Stars and constellations show up on the screen, depending on where you're pointing the phone
Taxi Magic - Supposedly helps find taxis, haven't used it yet
Fantasy Guru - For yahoo fantasy sports
ESPN ScoreCenter - sports scores
Craigsnotifica - craigslist app, enter search criteria and whenever something that matches gets posted to craigslist, you get a notification, very helpful
ShopSavvy - barcode scanner, compares prices at online stores and nearby stores
My Tracks - keeps a record of everywhere the phone has been, when it is turned on, haven't used it yet
Places - another app to help find restaurants/gas stations/stores/atms/etc.
Documents to Go - MS office for the phone, full version
Drunk Blocker - app that prevents drunk dialing
iheartradio - listen to radio stations over the phone
Pandora - music
MusicBox - download music for free, probably illegal
iTag - modify tags on music
Shazam - identifies songs by listening to them
TV.com - watch tv shows on phone for free
Retro Camera - takes cool looking pictures
Goggles - identifies landmarks by pictures
Flickr Free - to upload pictures to Flickr
Orange Converter - unit conversions
Bubble - level
DroidLight - Flashlight that uses camera flash
Advanced App Killer - kills apps that aren't being used, to save battery
Lookout - automatically backs up phone and enables you to find your phone using a computer if you lose the phone
Drinks Recipes - self explanatory
Bars and Clubs - finds bars based on the type of bar you're interested in
Drinking Games - self explanatory
Games: Sudoku, Yahtzee, Chess, Tetris, Mahjong

Check out JuiceDefender and advanced task killer, should help out with battery life. I'm on a droid 2 and can easily make it through a full day of pretty heavy use now.

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

Something is fundamentally wrong when a phone needs anti-virus software.

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

If he is running Android 2.1 or higher he does not need a task killer more than likely. I would assume he is since the phone is most likely new. If he is running 2.2 (Froyo) then he really has no need for a task killer and according to some of the devs actually destroys performance.

aparch those arent virus software apps, they are apps to make sure the phone kills apps that arent running and may drain power. JD is an app so you can have it automatically toggle off background data or wifi or whatever. It is a handy app, but rather unnecessary on most Android phones since you can just set up a widget on one of the homescreens and do it yourself. Like at home I turn off the 3G and turn on wifi since it is way faster and uses less battery.

I have an app called Congress that shows you all of your Congressmen/Senators and how to contact them :D

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

After reading your replies, and some Android forums, I did uninstall the Advanced App Killer. It seems to improve overall performance, and charge life.

I also removed the AVG, but am keeping Lookout since I liked it when I had my BlackBerry. Malware on smartphones is "the next big thing" in data security issues, and I do use the DX for work sometimes.

- Shazam Encore
- The Weather Channel
- AP Mobile
- Opera Mini Browser 5
- Photoshop Express
- Google Maps (updated)

Re: What's your favorite App? (iPhone, Droid, etc)

I found some new apps recently, for the Droid:

Firefox Web Browser (I had been using Steel Browser, there are some things that I like better with Steel and others that Firefox does better, at this time I'm just using both)
Delta Airlines
Priceline Negotiator
StubHub
CamScanner (Cool app that takes pictures of a document, crops it, enhances it and turns it into a pdf)
Yahoo Fantasy Baseball '11
Compass
Simple Weather Alert (if there is a NWS weather watch or warning in any area code that I enter, I get a notification)

Goes by area code? That sucks if you live in, say Alaska where 2/3 of a million square miles is one area code... Or northern Minnesota even, where everything "up north" is one area code. Why would I care about a watch or warning for Grand Portage - a 6 hour drive from me?

Apps I'm using the most lately:

Bubble Shoot (simple but addictive)
Dish Network Direct Access (fantastic if you get the sling adapter - truly TV anywhere!)
Netflix for Android

edit - oh yeah, Evo 4G users? Gingerbread. Bam!

My mistake, the weather alert app goes by zipcode, not area code. So it is more focused on a specific area.

Tim Hortons Finder -- found a Tims in Geneseo NY, a block from where we were having dinner!
